  • The purpose of this study is to research the whitening effects of fermentation extract made from the Rice bran and Dendropanax(FRD) Fermentation conditions were as follows; 1) Dendropanaxand and Rice bran were blended in a ratio of 1 to 1, 2) a weight of sugar was 10% of the total weight, 3) an amount of enzyme was 0.1%, and 4) a temperature was 20℃. It has been fermented for 90 days. In order to observe the whitening effects of FRD, the author measured the cell viability and the inhibition rate of the melanin biosynthesis, the activity of tyrosinase and SOD (superoxide dismutase) in malignant melanoma, B16F10 cells. As a result, FRD significantly inhibited the cell viability of B16F10 in more than 500 ㎍/㎖. FRD significantly suppressed the generation of melanin, and that induced by α-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH) in more than 1,000 ㎍/㎖. FRD significantly decreased the activity of tyrosinase and that induced by α-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH) in more than 500 ㎍/㎖. FRD did not changed the activity of SOD in dose dependent manner. Therefore, the author considered that the fermentation extract made from a Rice bran and Dendropanax will be able to produce high value-added products, if used as a commercial. • Dendropanax trifidus belonging to the family Araliaceae, is a warm-temperate evergreen tree distributed in Jeju Island, Bogil Island, Geomun Island, Geoje Island, Wando, and Haenam in Korea. In June 2021, a root rot disease in which branches of Dendropanax trifidus seedlings turned brown and shrunk was discovered at the seedling cultivation facility in Naju-si, Republic of Korea. To identify the root rot fungus, three strains were isolated from the diseased tissues of seedlings and their mycological characteristics were investigated on potato dextrose agar. In addition, a molecular phylogenetic analysis was performed using sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and translation elongation factor 1-α (EF1-α) gene. The fungus was identified as Fusarium oxysporum. For pathogenicity test, the roots of seedlings were immersed in the conidia suspension of the strains and planted. After 20 days inoculation, root rot and browning symptoms were confirmed in the inoculated plants. This is the first report of F. oxysporum on D. trifidus in Korea.

  • The ecological characteristics of 10 natural stands of Dendropanax morbifera(Haenam, Wando 1, Wando 2, Bogildo, Kemundo and Hongdo and Sendol, Suoak, Hannam, and Kidowon populations in Cheju island) were studied. In most of the Dendropanax morbifera natural stands, the following tree species appeared predominantly : Camellia japonica, Castanopsis cuspidate var. sieboldii, Castanopsis cuspidate var. thunbergii, Carpinus laxiflora, Quercus acute and Eurya japonica. Especially, Camellia japonica and Eurya japonica appeared in all the stands. Dendropanax morbifera occupied 17.2% of the upper story, 12.9% of the middle story, and 10.3% of the lower story, respectively. The distribution patterns by Morisita's Index showed that Dendropanax morbifera was distributed randomly in all of the three stories, i.e. the upper, the middle and the lower stories. Dendropanax morbifera was positively associated with Camellia japonica, Eurya japonica, Carpinus laxiflora, Cinnamomum japonicum, Ligustrum japonicum, Callicarpa Japonica, Castanopsis cuspidate var. thunbergii, Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii, Daphniphyllum macropodum, Acer palmatum and Euonymus oxyphyllus. This might suggest that the ecological niche is similar to each other. The cluster analysis using percent dissimilarity(PD) based on species composition divided into two groups. One group consisted of the populations located along the south-western coasts. The other group consisted of the populations of Cheju island. This result was agree with that of ordination analysis. From these results, We could find out that the species composition of the populations of Dendrapanax morbifera in Cheju island was quite different from those of other regions.

  • Postmenopausal women aged 50s generally experience gradual changes in body such as decline in antioxidant and estrogen levels as the body ages. To overcome these aging-associated changes, the needs for health functional foods are increasing. Dendropanax morbifera (DM) have antioxidant effects, anti-inflammatory against cancer cells, antidiabetic, and antiatherogenic effect which are associated with postmenopausal symptoms. We analyzed clinical effects of DM on aging-related symptoms by reporting their antioxidant, anticancer and inflammatory activity, etc. and their bioactivity. Data sources EMBASE, SCOPUS, PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases were searched up to August 2016 for studies investigating medicinal plants in prevention and treatment of diabetes. The search terms were "Dendropanax morbifera". The reference lists of articles were also reviewed for additional relevant studies. Extracts of DM have various efficacy such as antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory activity and anti-thrombotic effect.

  • Leaf spot and blight disease was observed on two-year-old seedlings of Dendropanax morbifera (Korean name: Hwangchil tree) during July of 2008 in Jindo Island, Korea. Symptoms included yellow-brown to dark brown irregularly enlarged spots frequently located along the veins of leaves. The lesions were often surrounded by chlorotic haloes. Severe leaf blight and subsequent defoliation occurred when conditions favored disease outbreak. The causal organism of the disease was identified as Alternaria panax based on morphological characteristics and sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region of rDNA. A. panax isolates induced leaf spots and blight symptoms not only on D. morbifera but also on the other members of Araliaceae tested. This is the first report of foliar blight caused by A. panax on D. morbifera.

  • Dendropanax morbifera Leveille, an endemic species in Korea, is best known as a tree that produces a resinous sap. Although D. morbifera is used in folk medicine for various diseases, its active ingredients are largely unknown. In this study, we investigated antioxidative activities of ethanolic extracts of three parts of this plant including leaves, debarked stems, and roots. The root extracts exhibited strong 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) scavenging activity compared with leaf or stem extracts. The root extracts showed hepatoprotective activity against t-butyl hydroperoxide-induced HepG2 cells, and reduced the ROS level in the cells. The root fractions lowered the mRNA level of COX-2 on lipopolysaccharide-stimulated Raw246.7 cells. These results suggest that ethanolic root extracts of D. morbifera are a source of antioxidant and hepatoprotective compounds, which indicate a potential for a botanical drug.

  • The Korean Dendropanax lacquer, made from a natural resinous sap from Dendropanax orbifera Lev., was used as a golden and transparent varnish for the traditional artifacts (armor uits, helmets, arrowheads, etc.) to make them be brilliant golden color. The cured film of the acquer has excellent protective properties such as weatherability, water resistance, and nticorrosive. But, one of disadvantages is that takes a long time and much energy to fulfill curing the lacquer. The chemical constituents of the lacquer contained conjugated diene compounds s the photopolymerizable monomers. These monomers easily polymerized in sunlight to form olden-colored, hard-coating films in a short time. Photooxidation may be one of the most mportant reactions in the chemistry of the lacquer. Although the Korean Dendropanax Lacquer hould be dried to a thoroughly dry stage to achieve optimal film properties, curing with elevated emperatures may be required for the protracted curing time at atmospheric temperature. So we ntended to accelerate the curing rate of the lacquer by dual curing of thermal and radiation uring. The effect of thermal initiator on the thermal curing reaction was evaluated by monitoring he changes in double bond peak with FT-IR. Then the curing rate of the lacquer blended with hermal initiator and photoinitiator together was measured during dual curing using a RPT with V spot curing machine. Thermal initiator not only accelerated the curing rate but also improved he physical property. And the curing rate of the Korean Dendropanax lacquer was improved by ual curing method of thermal and UV curing. According to these results, the application area of he Korean Dendropanax lacquer could be expanded to surface coatings for electronic devices uch as mobile phones or electronics.
