  • Metagonimus miyatai n. sp. (Digenea: Heterophyidae) is described based on adult flukes collected from experimental dogs and hamsters fed with metacercariae encysted in the sweetfish, Plecoglossus altivelis, dace, Tribolodon hakonensis and T. taczanowskii, common fat-minnow. Morocco steindachneri pale chub, Zacco platypus, and dark chub, Zacco temmincki, and on those collected from naturally infected humans. The new species was morphologically compared with M. yokogawai and M. takahashii obtained from experimental animals fed with the sweetflsh and the crucian carp, Cnrossius caressius, respectively. The uterine loops of M. miyatai reached near the posterior end of the body through the space between the two testes, whereas those of M. yokogawai, occupied only the space between the acetabulum and anterior border of two testes. This uterine tubule distribution was similar to that of another closely related species, M. takahashii. However vitellaria of M. miyatai ended in front of the posterior end of the left testis, while those of M. takahcshii reached the posterior end of the left testis and ran it over. By raising M. miyatai as a new species, differentiation of M. yokogawai and M. takahashii became very clear. A key to the species of the genus Metagonimus in the Far East has been proposed.

  • In order to analyse the detection of viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV) in marine environment surrounding coastal region of Eastern and Southern sea of Korea, the pools of each organ sample of three fish were taken for virus assay from February to May in 2003. The samples comprised 42, taken from 9 species of marine fishes. The VHSV was detected from chub mackerel Scomber japonicus and striped mullet Mugil cephalus in epithelioma papulosum cyprini (EPC) cells. The identity of the virus was confirmed a reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). VHSV has previously been reported from chub mackerel, but not from striped mullet. The new isolates was classified as a member of genogroup I (American type) of VHSV and was closely related to the VHSV KVHS'01-l based on comparisons of the partial nucleotide sequence of the glycoprotein (G) gene.

  • This study analyzed the content of eight biogenic amines (BAs), including histamine, in 198 fishery products (121 school-meal products and 77 distributed products) in Korea in 2019. Changes in BA content according to time, temperature, and salt treatment in Japanese Spanish mackerel, chub mackerel, and salmon were also observed. The average histamine content of 198 fishery products was 0.4±2.3 mg/kg, and all were within histamine criteria (200 mg/kg or less). As a result, the margin of exposure (MOE) was calculated to evaluate the risk of fishery products, and school-meal fishery products were evaluated as safe with a MOE of 1 or more. At 30℃, the histamine content of the fish increased rapidly to 144 mg/kg (Japanese Spanish mackerel, 36 h), and 308 mg/kg (chub mackerel, 24 h). When the Japanese Spanish mackerel, chub mackerel, and salmon were stored at 4℃, histamine was not detected for 3 days, and it was not detected for 14 days at -20℃. The BA content (histamines, etc.) of salt-treated Japanese Spanish mackerel and chub mackerel was lower than that of fish not treated with salt.

  • This study is aimed to estimate price interactions between wild caught fish and farmed fish on the Korean seafood market, using multivariate cointegration analysis. Major commercially important four wild caught fish (chub mackerel, hairtail, yellow croaker and spanish mackerel) and two farmed fish(oliver flounder and black rockfish) are selected as analytical target fish species. Between 2000 and 2013, monthly production and price data are used in this study. The results of cointegration test showed that there would be a long-term equilibrium relationship among 4 wild caught fish and 2 farmed fish. However, the results of exclusion test indicated that farmed fish might not contribute significantly to the long-run relationship, suggesting that farmed fish might be only a weak substitute for wild caught fish, but no significant interaction could be found.

  • This study is aimed to estimate market integration of wild caught fish species on the Korean market, using both multivariate and bivariate cointegration analysis. For the analysis of market integration between wild caught fish species, major four fish species those are most popular fish in the market and caught by the large purse seine fishery-chub mackerel, jack mackerel, hairtail and spanish mackerel-were selected as analytical target fish species. And their real monthly price data from January 2000 to December 2011 were used in the analysis. The results of the multivariate cointegration test for four wild caught fish species showed that there would be long-term equilibrium relationships among prices of four wild caught fish species, and consequently, the markets for wild caught fish species were estimated to be integrated. The results of exclusion test and bivariate cointegration test also supported that there would be a clear evidence to suggest that all target wild caught fish species were cointegrated each other.

  • This paper proposes a novel voltage distortion approach for output filter design based on the voltage transfer function for both off-grid and grid-connected Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) Inverters. The method explained in detail is compared to conventional methods. A comparative analysis is performed on an example of L and LCL-filter design. Simulation and experimental results for the off-grid and the grid-connected single phase inverter prove our theoretical predictions. It was found that conventional methods define redundant values of the output filter elements. Assumptions and limitations of the proposed approach are also discussed.

  • The horizontal distributions of eggs and larvae of chub mackerel Scomber japonicus were extensively surveyed in the vicinity of Korean waters between 31°75'N and 36°50'N during May and June in 2016 and 2017 (total of four surveys). We used a coupled bio-physical model (DisMELS) that combines an individual-based model (IBM) incorporating vertical migration of larvae and temperature-dependent survival to understand transport processes in the early life stage. Using the distributions of eggs and larvae from surveys, the potential spawning grounds were estimated at the northwest and southeast of Jeju Island and the central East China Sea in May, and at the southwestern East Sea and southern West Sea in June by running the model backward in time. In forward experiments within 30 days from the backward results, most larvae were transported to both the Korean and Japanese sides of the East Sea through the Korea Strait. However, the larvae released in the central East China Sea were transported to the Japanese side only, while those released in the southern West Sea were retained within that region. The survival rates at 30 days after release based on the simulation incorporating temperature-dependent survival throughout May and June were 29.7% in 2016 and 28.8% in 2017.

  • In order to establish fundamental data for stream restoration and environmental flow, we investigated optimal ecological flowrate (OEF) and riverine health condition in the Chogang Stream, a tributary to Geum River, Korea. The number of fish individuals sampled in this period were 4,669 in 36 species of 9 families. The most abundant species was Korean chub (Zacco koreanus, 34.0%) followed by pale chub (Z. platypus, 22.6%) and Korean shinner (Coreoleuciscus splendidus, 13.3%). Index of biological integrity (IBI) and qualitative habitat evaluation index (QHEI) values decreased from upstream to downstream along the stream. The estimated IBI value ranged from 27.9 to 38.6 with average 32.2 out of 50, rendering the site ecologically fair to good health conditions. OEF was estimated by the physical habitat simulation system (PHABSIM) using the habitat suitability indexes (HSI) of three fish species Z. koreanus, C. splendidus and Pseudopungtungia nigra selected as indicator species. In Z. koreanus, HSI for flow velocity and water depth were estimated at 0.1 to 0.4 m/s and 0.2 to 0.4 m, respectively. In P. nigra, HSI for flow velocity, water depth and substrate size were estimated at 0.2 to 0.5 m/s and 0.4 to 0.6 m and fine gravel to cobbles, respectively. OEF values increasing from up to downstream was found to increase, weighted usable area (WUA) values increased accordingly.
