The Denver Developmental Screening Test was devised to provide a simple method of evaluating the developmental status of infants and preschool children. To assess the development of Korean children, 667 children (390 boys and 277 girls) between the ages of 2 weeks and 6 years who live in Kwangju city and rural areas in Chonnam were examined according to the DDST. The ages at which 25%, 50%, 75%, and 90% of the children performed each item were calculated for the entire sample. The results of these were compared with the norms of Denver children and other related previous studies in Korea. The development of the boys was also compared with that of the girls, and further the test results of city children and country children were also compared. Girls performed the DDST items in personal-social, fine motor-adaptive and gross motor sectors slightly earlier than boys. In general, however, there were no significant differences in the developmental rate between boys and girls. In all four sectors of the DDST, urban children performed the items significantly earlier than rural children. In comparing Korean children and Denver children, Korean children tended to perform gross motor and personal-social items at a slightly earlier age than Denver children. In the language sector, Denver children tended to perform a little earlier than Korean children. But on the whole there were no significant differences in developmental status between Korean and Denver children. It should be noted that a few items, such as“Uses plurals”, needed to be changed due to the structure of Korean language.
Objective: The study aimed to examine the impact of a supportive school environment on children's prosocial behavior by investigating the sequential mediating effects of children's self-esteem and happiness. Methods: Results of the study were obtained by analysing data collected from 633 nine-year-old children in the 10th wave of the Panel Study on Korean Children(2017). The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and significance of mediated pathways using SPSS 23.0 and PROCESS macro 3.3. Results: First, children's self-esteem did not have mediational effects with respect to a supportive school environment and children's prosocial behavior. Second, children's happiness had mediational effects with respect to a supportive school environment and children's prosocial behavior. Lastly, a supportive school environment affects children's self-esteem, which affects children's happiness, thereby promoting children's prosocial behavior. Conclusion/Implications: In order to promote children's prosocial behavior, we should put emphasis on developing a supportive school environment, and increasing children's self-esteem and happiness. It is important that teachers treat children and classmates treat each other with a warm attitude so that they can value themselves and feel happiness in their lives.
Objectives The purpose of this study is to research on sleep habits of weak children groups using objective evaluation tools. Methods This study surveyed 108 children and adolescents of 4~10 years old who visited the department of Pediatrics of ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ Korean Medicine Hospital from June 19th, 2015 to August 28th, 2015. Weak Children Questionnaire and CSHQ (The Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire) were used to research on sleep habits of children. We analyzed the data by using PASW Statistics 18.0 with independent t-test. Results CSHQ Score of Weak Children Group was significantly higher than CSHQ Score of Normal Children Group (p<0.05). CSHQ Score ($Mean{\pm}SD$) of Normal Children Group was $52.92{\pm}5.72$ and CSHQ Score ($Mean{\pm}SD$) of Weak Children Group was $56.23{\pm}5.66$. Conclusions Weak Children Group had more sleep habit problems than Normal Children Group.
The purpose of this study was to investigate answer the following research questions. (1) What is the trend of Children's locus of control, children's social competency, and children's prosocial behaviors? (2) Is there any relationship between children's locus of control and children's social competency, between children's locus of control and children's prosocial behavior, between children's social competency and children's prosocial behavior? (3) Is children's prosocial behavior influenced by the locus of control and by the social competency? The subjects of this study were 99 children atending the nursery school in Pusan. For the measurement of children's locus of control, the Stanford Preschool Internal-External Scale was used. As a measure of social competency. Iowa Social Competency was used. Children's prosocial behavior was measured by the amount of candies to share with playmates. The findings of this study were as follows: (1) The mean scores of children's locus of control, children's social competency, and children's prosocial behavior were low. (2) There significant correlation between children's locus of control and social competency, between children's locus of control and prosocial behavior. (3) Children's locus of control was an important predictor variable influencing children's prosocial behavior.
The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of young children's shyness on the relationship between teacher-children relationship and young children's social competence. The subjects of the study were 270 children from three years to five years old and their teachers in Busan. Frequency, t-test, Cronbach ${\alpha}$, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and hierarchial regression were used for data analysis. The results were as follows: first, teacher-children intimacy showed positive correlation with the young children's social competence. Teacher-children conflict showed negative correlation with the young children's social competence. Second, teacher-children intimacy showed negative correlation with the young children's shyness. Teacher-children conflict showed positive correlation with the young children's shyness. Third, young children's shyness showed negative correlation with the young children's social competence. Fourth, young children's shyness had partial mediating effects on the relationship between teacher-children intimacy and young children's sociability. Young children's shyness had partial mediating effects on the relationship between teacher-children intimacy and young children's popularity and leadership. Young children's shyness had partial mediating effects on the relationship between teacher- children conflict and young children's sociability. This study examined the satisfaction level and effects of after-school program cooking activities in children of multicultural families. A total of 135 children of general and multicultural families from 3th to 6th grades and their 11 teachers were surveyed, and 75 multicultural family children underwent a cooking activity program. Children of multicultural families showed higher participation in cooking activities than other Korean children. Children of multicultural families wanted to be involved in cooking activity programs after school more than other Korean children. These children also showed a higher rate of wanting to cook Korean foods compared to children of general families. Regarding reasons for participating in cooking activities, 'I think I'm glad to be served delicious food' response was the most common. Children of multicultural families showed higher participation in cooking activities than children of general families. Regarding school life changes, children of multicultural families were found to be less picky of foods in general as well as kimchi and vegetables. In conclusion, cooking activity programs for children of multicultural family showed beneficial effects on diet and understanding of Korean culture.
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the sentence comprehension strategies used by Korean/English bilingual children when they listened to sentences of their first language, i.e., Korean. The framework of competition model was employed to analyze the influence of the second language, i.e., English, during comprehension of Korean sentences. The participants included 10 bilingual children (ages 7;4-13;0) and 20 Korean-speaking monolingual children(ages 5;7-6;10) with similar levels of development in Korean language as bilingual children. In an act-out procedure, the children were asked to determine the agent in sentences composed of two nouns and a verb with varying conditions of three cues (case-marker, animacy, and word-order). The results revealed that both groups of children used the case marker cues as the strongest cue among the three. The bilingual children relied on case-marker cues even more than the monolingual children. However, the bilingual children used animacy cues significantly less than the monolingual children. There were no significant differences between the groups in the use of word-order cues. The bilingual children appeared less effective in utilizing animacy cues in Korean sentence comprehension due to the backward transfer from English where the cue strength of animacy is very weak. The influence of the second language on the development of the first language in bilingual children was discussed.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify the mediation effect of value of children in the relationship between maternal parenting stress and ideal number of children and to verify whether perception of the adequacy of national public childcare facilities moderates this mediation relationship. Methods: For the analysis, the 6th year results (2013) from the Panel Study on Korean Children by the Korean Institute of Child Care and Education were used. The main subjects of the study were 1,611 mothers with children aged 60 - 66 months. Results: First, there was a partial mediation effect of mother's parenting stress influencing the ideal number of children through the value of children. Second, the enhancing effect of the perception of the adequacy of national public childcare facilities moderating the value of children and ideal number of children was verified. Third, perception of the adequacy of national public childcare facilities had enforcing effects moderating the value of children and ideal number of children and mediation effects moderating the influence of maternal parenting stress on ideal number of children through the value of children. Conclusion: Based on the results, it was confirmed that the expansion of national public childcare facilities is a factor strengthening the maternal intention of birth.
The purpose of this study was to answer the following questions. (1) Is there any relationship between father's child-rearing behavior and children's role-taking, between father's child-rearing behaviors and children's prosocial behavior?(2) Is there any relationship between children's role-taking and children's prosocial behavior? (3) Is there any differences in father's child-rearing behaviors, children's role-taking and children's prosocial behavior in relation to children's sex, SES, and mother's job? (4) what are the most important predictor variables which influence on children's role-taking? (5) What are the most important predictor variables which influence on children's prosocial behavior? The subjects of this study were 72boys and 70girls attending the nursery schools and their mothers in Busan. For the measurement of father's child-rearing behaviors, Choi's(1991) questionnare were used and for children's role-taking, children were interviewed with the Flavell's apple-dog stories. children's prosocial behavior was measured by amount of candies to share with classmates. The results were as follows: (1) There were significant correlation between father's child-rearing behaviors and children's role-taking, between father's was positively related to children's prosocial behavior. (2) Children's role-taking was positively related to children's prosocial behavior. (3) There were significant differences in father's child-rearing behaviors, children's role-taking and children's prosocial behavior according to children's sex, SES, and mother's job. (4) Father's child-rearing behaviors and SES were the most important predictor variables influencing on children's role-taking. (5) Children's sex, children's role-taking and father's childrearing behaviors were the most important predictor variables influencing on children's prosocial behavior. The findings stated above seemed father's child-rearing behaviors and children's role-taking, influenced on children's prosocial behavior.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of child abuse, children's peer attachment and self-esteem on children's depression/anxiety. In addition, the mediating role of children's peer attachment and self-esteem between child abuse and children's depression/anxiety was investigated. Methods: Using the data of 396 children in grades 4~6 from the Korean Welfare Panel Study (2015), this study was conducted by applying Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Results: The results of this study were as follows. First, child abuse had a direct influence on children's depression/anxiety, and self-esteem. Second, children's self-esteem had a direct influence on depression/anxiety. Third, children's self-esteem had mediating effects on the relationship between child abuse and children's depression/anxiety. Fourth, children's peer relationships had a direct influence on self-esteem. But, children's peer attachment did not have a direct influence on depression/anxiety. The effect of children's peer attachment on their depression/anxiety was partially mediated by children's self-esteem. Conclusion/Implications: In conclusion, child abuse, children's peer attachment and self-esteem have a direct or indirect impact on the depression/anxiety of children.
