  • Sun Yung Shin's poetry collection Skirt Full of Black (2007) brings the author's personal history as a Korean female adoptee to bear upon poetic language in daring formal experiments, instantiating the liminal state of being shuttled across borders to land in an in-between state of marginalization. Other Korean American poets have also drawn on the experience of transnational adoption and racialization explore the literary potential of English to materialize haunting memories or the untranslatable yet persistent echoes of a lost home that gestures across linguistic boundaries, as seen in the case of Lee Herrick or Jennifer Kwon Dobbs. Shin however dismantles the referential foundation of English as a language she was transplanted into through formal transgressions such as frazzled syntax, atypical typography, decontextualized punctuation marks, and phonetic and visual play. The power to signify and thereby differentiate one entity or meaning from another dissipates in the cacophonic feast of signs in Skirt Full of Black; the word fragments of identificatory markers that turn racialized, gendered, and culturally contained subjects into exotic things lose the power to define them as such, and instead become alterities by departing from the conventional meaning-making dynamics of language. Expanding on the avant-garde legacy of Korean American poets Theresa Hak Kyung Cha and Myung Mi Kim to delve further into the liminal space between Korean and American, referential and representational, or spoken and written words, Shin carves out a space for discreteness that does not subscribe to the hierarchical ontology of differential value assignment.

  • From a review of the literature it was found that 96 species of fungi have been reported as occurring on the wood of Ulmus americana L., the Amercan elm. In an intensive study of the fungi growing on one American elm log, 60 species were found. Only one had been reported previously on American elm. A second fungus proved to be a hyperparasite of a slime mold. Three members of the Fungi Imperfecti could not be identified and is believed that they may constitute new taxa. In the past, Nasidiomycetes constituted the main group of fungi on American elm wood according to the literature. The Fungi Imperfecti were the largest group in this study in that over half of the species found are imperfect fungi. All of the species encountered in the study were illustrated.

  • This essay examines the first-generation Korean American writer, No-Yong Park's falsehoods about his ethnic identity to suggest how and why he passed for Chinese, and to explore the political, anti-Japanese implications of these actions. The essay first identifies erroneous information circulating about his biographical background, presents some other materials that help us better understand the context in which he forged his Chinese identity, and then examines how he represented himself as Chinese in his published works. I would argue that Park's self-identification as Chinese was a resulting outcome of his naturalization caused by the Japanese colonial power in Korea and also one of his surviving strategies in the racist environment within American society. Looking at some of his works-including Making a New China (1929), An Oriental View of American Civilization (1934), Chinaman's Chance: Autobiography (1940)-and examining how he represented Korea and its people reveal how he tried to raise voice for them. By doing so, this essay illuminates Park's resistance to Japan's colonial discourse and power in Korea while revealing his lifetime passing as Chinese-far from his refusal to belong to the Korean community, or to acknowledge being Korean.

  • American English vowels and Korean vowels were compared by the plotformant method. For American English vowels, six General American English speakers pronounced English words in the b_t environment. For Korean vowels eight Kyongsang dialect speakers and eight Seoul dialect speakers pronounced Korean words in the environments of k_t, p_t and t_t. The formant plots were obtained by plotting F1/F2 tokens of 13 American English vowels on the F1xF2 plane. In spite of personal variations the 13 vowel spaces of all six American English speakers maintained their relative positions with some overlaps. Clear distinctions were made between i-I, e-$\varepsilon$, u-$\sigma$, and o-c. The domain of c and $\alpha$ overlapped for three American English speakers, but it did not for three other speakers. The 8 Korean vowel spaces of Kyongsang dialect speakers and Seoul dialect speakers were very similar and maintained their relative positions. No distinction was made between e and $\varepsilon$. In contrast with American English e which is a neutral vowel, Korean e was a back vowel. The comparison of 13 American English vowel positions and 8 Korean Vowel positions is expected to shed some light on the errors of English vowel pronunciation of Korean learners.

  • It is confusing in Korean Society of Engineering Economy that terminologies of interest formula in Korean were defined differently literature by literature. In this paper, we proposed a rationale for standardization of interest formula by analyzing and comparing them from American, Japan, and Korean literatures. Twenty formulas of interest were interpreted into Korean language so that ones can identify by knowing their title.

  • Nasalance is used to evaluate the velopharyngeal incompetence in clinical diagnosis using Nasometer. The aim of this study is to find the nasalance differences between English native speakers and Korean speakers by measuring the nasalance of Oral and Nasal sentences. 20 Americans and 20 Korean students participate to the experimentation. The results are as follows: (1) The nasalance of females for Oral and Nasal sentences is higher than that of males for both native and Korean speakers. (2) The nasalance of Oral sentences in Korean men and females is higher than that of Oral sentences in American men and females, however, the nasalance of Nasal sentences in American men and females is higher than that of Nasal sentences in Korean men and females. (3) The nasalance of stop consonants /p, t, k/ in Korean men and females is higher than that of consonants in American men and females. (4) The nasalance of nasal consonants /m, n, ɧ/ in American men and females is higher than that of consonants in Korean men and females.

  • Diaspora studies has become one of the fastest growing field in the humanities over the past several decades, and the use of term diaspora has been widening to include almost any population on the move. Diaspora literature not only mirrors but actively incorporates this new notion of diaspora with characters "at the threshold" navigating new territories and identities. Querying how diaspora studies intersects with theatre and performance, this paper attempts to probe how recent Korean American drama parallels and promotes diaspora studies' radical departure from traditional notions of identities and territories. For this purpose, this essay 1) examines theoretical affinities between diaspora studies and performance studies 2) investigates how Sung Rno's plays, Cleveland Raining and wAve, explore and embody multiple and evolving meanings of Korean diaspora on the stage 3) examines how theatre can create the third space that transcends both Korean and American nationalism and 4) speculates possibilities of reframing Asian American Studies as Asian diaspora studies. Korean American characters in Rno's play redirect diasporic identities, as their concern gradually moves from "where I come from" to "where I go to." Instead of remaining in the dark as a mere spectator, both Rno and his characters choose to be 'on' the stage where they can imagine, perform, and realize (however temporarily) "unimaginable community" by confronting their own social, political, and cultural ambivalence. Stage, the threshold between reality and fiction, Korea and America, and past and future, becomes their true 'home' where they incubate and precipitate "nation in transformation" that Yan Haiping argues for as "another transnational."

  • This paper examines the benefits of teaching The Adventures of Wu Han of Korea in secondary education in Korea. The novel is a rare sample of twentieth-century American fiction that features a Korean protagonist. What is notable in this novel is that its major Korean characters seem to share the mindset of their American author and creator and represent the Western perspective in their discourse of Korean/Eastern idea and culture. The novel is packed with Orientalist attitudes and could be taught as a case study of Orientalism. Teachers can also use the novel to teach students the art of close reading by analyzing selected scenes from the text.

  • Over the past decades the concept of Third-Party Logistics(TPL) has generated considerable interest in American and European industries. It involves outsourcing logistics activities that have traditionally been performed within an organization. The functions performed by the third-party logistics can encompass the entire logistics process or, more commonly, selected activities with that process. Increasing corporate emphasis on such concepts as reengineering and supply chain management has led many companies to consider the use of such third-party logistics. This study examines the possibility of applying existing American research of the third-party logistics to Korean companies and investigates the criteria for the use of third-party logistics in Korea. To design the model and generate the hypotheses, this study conducted a comprehensive literature survey on the third-party logistics. To test the hypotheses, this study collected data from 229 companies from the public companies in Korea through a questionnaire survey and conducted descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, factor analysis, and multiple regression analysis using the SPSS for Windows Ver. 7.5 package. This study is hoped that it may contribute to the understanding and introducing of the third-party logistics in the fields of the firms. But there were some restrictions that the respondents were not covered all kinds of firms. These and other major findings from this study imply that existing American studies may be applicable the Korean companies and that this study may complement the deficiencies of the existing studies. Thus, the summary of the literature review, the research model and hypotheses, and empirical findings in this study will provide useful ideas for future research and deep insights for successful logistics management.
