Purpose: The suicide rate of adolescents in Korea is increasing annually. Therefore, this research was done to identify the suicide attempt rate of middle and high school students and to identify factors that influence suicidal attempts. Methods: The Korea Youth Health Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (2007) was used as data. Discriminant analysis and logistic regression were performed to analyze the data depending on gender to consider the gender difference in assessing the influence of each independent variable on suicidal attempts. Results: Discriminant analysis according on gender showed that 13 factors correlated with suicidal attempts for boys, and 20 factors for girls. The most highly correlated factors were smoking, depression and inhalation experience. For inhalation experience, boys had 2.7 times higher possibility of suicide attempts (95% CI 1.8-3.0) and girls, a 2.4 times higher possibility (95% CI 1.7-3.5). Conclusion: The results of the study indicate a need to classify adolescents for expectation of suicide risk and high danger for suicidal attempts through, and introduce suicide prevention programs for these adolescents. In particular, it is necessary to start intervention with students who smoke, have sexual and inhalation experiences and high levels of depression.
Objectives: Students' life changes substantially as grade increases. It implies that risk factors that trigger students' smoking may not be consistent across grades. Most previous studies on student smoking have considered grade simply a control variable. This study examines which and to what extent risk factors are differently associated with smoking initiation according to grade level among high school students in Korea. Methods: Data from the Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBWS) conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) in 2007 and 2008 were analyzed in this study. Results: Among boys, school location, school type and pocket money etc. significantly influence smoking initiation in the first grade than in any other grades, but the strength of the association decreased as grade increases except academic performance. Among girls, most independent variables were associated with smoking initiation in the second grade except school location, pocket money per week and academic performance. Conclusions: Our results suggested that the variables related smoking initiation in Korean high school students were notably different by grade and gender. These findings can serve as the basis of policy recommendations with regard to school efforts to prevent student smoking.
Purpose: The study investigated the effect of adolescent health behavior on the prevalence of current allergic diseases. Methods: The subjects were 57,303 middle and high school youth. Data were analyzed using Rao-Scott χ2 test and complex sample logistic regression analysis. Results: While controlling the affect of the general characteristics of the subjects, health behaviors affecting the current prevalence of allergic diseases were smoking, drinking, physical activity, eating habits, drug abuse, and mental health. Smoking behaviors affecting the current prevalence of allergic diseases were lifetime smoking experience, smoking days, liquid e-cigarette lifetime smoking experience, number of liquid electronic cigarette smoking days, e-cigarette lifetime smoking experience, e-cigarette smoking days, amount of smoking, second-hand smoking and drinking behaviors were lifetime drinking, drinking days, the amount of drinking, and severe drinking. Variables such as physical activity exceeding 60 minutes days, intake of energy and sweet drinks, water intake, habitual drug use and mental health behavior such as stress perception, weekday sleep time, subjective sleep satisfaction, depression, suicidal thoughts/ plan/ attempts affect current allergic diseases (p<.001). Conclusion: The results showed that current allergic disease related health behaviors in Korean adolescents. Therefore, considering these factors, it may be helpful to facilitate a health promotion plan for prevention and management of such diseases and to promote evidence-based health practices at school.
Purpose: The purpose of the study is to examine the factors that influence Korean adolescents' depression and suicidal ideation from individual, social and environmental perspectives by gender. The study used the date of the 2015 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey and the subjects were 68,043 middle and high school students. The levels of depression and suicidal ideation were the dependent variables and the factors influencing the dependent variables included 11 individual factors, 3 social factors and 7 environmental factors. The data were analyzed using odds ratios (OR) from multi-variable logistic regression analysis. As a result, the most significant individual factors that influenced both depression and suicidal ideation were stress and subjective happiness both in boy and girls, the most significant social factor was participation in violence treatment programs, and the most significant environmental factors were economic status, father's educational level, and whether or not they lived with their family. Therefore, programs and policies to improve adolescents' mental health should be developed considering individual, social, and environmental factors.
In Korea, several national cross-sectional surveys monitor the diet, nutritional status, and health status of children. This continual dedicated national surveillance system contributes to the identification of nutritional and health issues, establishment of public health policies, and development of nutrition recommendations. This paper provides recent information about the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and the Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey and describes key nationwide survey findings published in the last 5 years on infant feeding practices and the dietary intake and nutritional status of Korean infants, children, and adolescents. There have been increasing trends in children, and teenagers who skip breakfast, eat fast food, consume sugary drinks, have vitamin D deficiency, and are obese. This review will inform pediatricians, nutritionists, and other health care practitioners who track children's growth and development. It may also help researchers and policymakers identify diet-related policies and strategies for chronic disease prevention in Korean infants, children, and adolescents.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of the environment on adolescent binge drinking. Methods: The study was designed as a cross-sectional study. Using statistics from the 17th (20201) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, the raw data target population was 2,629,588 people, and the sample group used for analysis as the final data was 54,848 people. A Rao-scott 𝑥2 test and univariate multinomial logistic regression analysis were performed using IBM SPSS 27.0. Results: In the results of univariate logistic regression analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis, common related variables were gender, school level, academic achievement, sleep satisfaction, current smoking, daily smoking, and alcohol education experience. Conclusion: As a result of confirming the factors influencing binge drinking in Korean adolescents, some variables that increase the possibility of problematic drinking behavior in the socio-environmental areas such as individuals, communities, and national policies were identified. For effective prevention and intervention, it is necessary to develop programs to build a healthy environmental support system with support from national policies, including individuals, peer groups, and communities.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the problems experienced by Korean adolescents due to smartphone use and related factors. Methods: The subjects were 57,463 middle school and high school students nationwide as the 13th The Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey, 2017. Data were analyzed using means, standard deviations, and composite sample multiple logistic regression analysis. Results: This study confirms that negative experiences were related to general characteristics of sex, academic background, socio-economic level, residential area and form, academic performance, and parental education; health behavior characteristics of subjective health cognition, depression, and stress; and characteristics related to smartphone use. Smartphone usage time amd use of services were factors related to the problems experienced from using smartphones. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to plan for the use of smartphones in consideration of physical and emotional health and to educate adolescents to promote social communication between family and friends. It is also necessary to develop and apply a smartphone use management program to maintain a balance between smartphone use, academic performance, and school life.
The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of mental health (stress perception, depression, suicidal ideation) on binge drinking among adolescents according to gender. Data were collected from the 12th (2016) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey(KYRBWS) and 65,528 middle and high school students, aged 12-18 years, were selected. Data analysis was conducted by using logistic regression analysis for mental health effects on binge drinking. The results showed that the binge drinking due to mental health of female students was higher in that of male students (stress perception: 1,444 times (95% CI: 1,200-1,737), depression: 1,843 times (95% CI: 1.674-2.029), suicidal ideation: 1.656 times (95% CI: 1.464-1.872)). The development of preventive / therapeutic programs for binge drinking should include not only the management of risk factors for mental health but also various approaches depending on gender.

Objectives: Since juveniles' unhealthy diets, and their problematic behavior resulting from drinking cause serious harm to those who are in a period of growth, we attempted to find out the relationship between juveniles' dietary habits and their drinking alcohol. Methods: The data was collected from 74,186 people in a 2012 web-based survey of Korean juveniles' health behavior, which was jointly conducted by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and the Korea Centers for Disease Control. This study conducted a logistic regression analysis using SPSS 18.0. Results: Juveniles who consume fast food at least once in a day have a significantly higher chance of binge drinking (OR=3.063, 95% CI=2.332~4.023), problematic drinking(OR=6.041, 95% CI=4.947~7.379) than those who don't. It also indicates that juveniles who don't eat breakfast have a significantly higher chance of binge drinking (OR=1.358, 95% CI=1.158~1.593), problematic drinking(OR=1.762 95% CI=1.548~2006) than those who eat breakfast every day. Conclusions: Irregular breakfast or a frequent intake of fast food causes problematic drinking, and binge drinking. Therefore, when planning programs for the prevention of juvenile drinking, it seems necessary to include education of healthy dietary habits.

This study was conducted in order to suggest directions for nursing intervention and education to prevent problem drinking of adolescents. We examine the influences of mental health characteristics of adolescents on problem drinking. For the research method, this study conducts secondary analysis using raw data from the 13th (2017) Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey. A total of 9,597 cases, excluding adolescents without drinking experience, were used for the final analysis. For the data analysis, the SPSS Win 23.0 program was used, and frequency analysis, ${\chi}^2$-test, and logistic regression analysis were conducted. Research results found general characteristics, school, school record, living type, father's education, and economic state were influencing factors on problem drinking. Regarding characteristics of mental health, depression (95% CI:1.578~1.930, p<.001), subjective happiness (95% CI:1.039~1.491, p=.002), suicidal ideation (95% CI:1.110~1.426, p<.001), and sufficiency of sleep (95% CI:1.085~1.399, p=.001) were primary factors affecting adolescents' problem drinking. Therefore, when conducting education for preventing problem drinking or nursing intervention programs targeting adolescents, it is necessary to provide methods offering experts' in-depth consultation with the consideration of characteristics of mental health of participants. Future research should conduct qualitative studies through in-depth interviews for reviewing problem drinking and identifying characteristics of adolescents. This study provides guidelines for nurses working with problem drinking adolescents in clinical settings and communities.
