New Car Assessment Program(NCAP) provides consumers with vehicle safety information, primarily front and side crash rating results, and more recently rollover ratings, to aid consumers in their vehicle purchase decisions. NCAP is a system to improve driver and passenger safety by providing market incentives for vehicle manufacturers to voluntarily design their vehicles to better protect drivers and passengers in a crash and be less susceptible to rollover, rather than by regulatory directives. NCAP have been performed since 1999 in Korea by the government in order to reduce fatalities and injuries caused by traffic accidents. Although as the number of vehicles models increases, more vehicle models are required to be test and NCAP is evaluated as a valuable system for vehicle safety, the expansion of the system is slow. It looks like that the benefit of NCAP quantitatively was not verified. In this study, based on the idea that the benefit of the NCAP is defined as the decrease of traffic accident severity by improving vehicle safety, a methodology to analyze the effectiveness of NCAP quantitatively in terms of traffic safety was developed. According to the developed methodology, the reduced numbers of fatalities and injuries were 1.51 and 466 in 2005.

Vehicle-into-pedestrian traffic accidents show a very high mortality rate compared to their frequency of occurrence. Throughout the world, governments and insurance companies tend to establish and implement new safety standards for pedestrian protection. In order to improve the performance of pedestrian protection, the Korean government has evaluated the pedestrian safety of vehicles under the Korea New Car Assessment Program (K-NCAP) since 2007. The pedestrian protection performance has improved gradually, but it remains insufficient. A pedestrian protection system consisting of a hood lift system and a pedestrian airbag can be a solution to pedestrian safety. A pedestrian airbag design procedure based on a newly defined design scenario is introduced to reduce the head injury criterion of pedestrians. The proposed design scenario is discussed from a practical viewpoint and applied to manufacture pedestrian protection systems.

Pedestrian to vehicle traffic accidents show a very high mortality rate compared to the frequency of occurrence. In order to improve the pedestrian protection performance of the vehicle, the korean government added a "pedestrian safety" entry from the year 2007. The performance for pedestrian protection of current vehicles gradually improved compared to the past, but it is still insufficient. It was found that the pedestrian protection performance was very weak, such as the top of the bonnet, the A-pillar and under the front windshield. A application of an active hood and pedestrian protection airbags can be countermeasures for these weak points of pedestrian safety. The active hood and pedestrian protection airbags are designed and manufactured to apply to the top of the hood and to the bottom of the windshield. The manufactured system is equipped in a test vehicle and evaluated based on the Korea New Car Assessment Program(KNCAP) test procedures for the performance of pedestrian safety. As a result, the outstanding effect of pedestrian protection has been achieved by the active hood and the pedestrian protection airbag. The rates of pedestrian injury are reduced by 82.2% and 95.4%, respectively.
In recent years, WorldSID dummy has been continuously developed and investigated to be a better represent biolfidelic ATD as well as a device for replacement of the current existing EuroSID-2. In Korea, the side impact accident is one of the major severe accidents in terms of numbers of accidents and fatality. Since 2003, 50kph 90degree side crash test has been initiated as a safety standard with EuroSID-1 at the first stage and also same time 55kph impact speed test has been conducted as a part of KNCAP program. Currently only EuroSID-2 is accepted as a regulatory tool for vehicle certification and KNCAP. In order to make use of WorldSID of KNCAP in the distant futuer the tests with WorldSID is conducted experimentally.
In order to protect occupant during car crash accident, Regulation and NCAP(New Car assessment Program) have been developed among various countries like U.S.A., Europe, Korea and Australia. Especially NCAP scores affect to sales of vehicles. So vehicle makers are trying to get good score in NCAP. Low leg injuries play an important role in Australia and Euro NCAP and these injuries are related with footrest design. Optimization of footrest design in early stage of vehicle development is necessary to obtain better and robust results of low legs during crash tests. In this paper, DFSS method and finite element model were used to optimize the low leg performance in small RHD vehicles. Compared with the lower leg injury of base model, the lower leg injury of proposed model was slightly improved and robustness was enhanced also.

The automobile industry has developed Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADASs) to prevent traffic accidents and reduce the burden for drivers. One example is the Lane Keeping Assistance System (LKAS), which was developed for automotive vehicle systems for safety and better driving. The main system of the LKAS supports the driver while maintaining the vehicle within a lane. LKAS uses a radar sensor and camera sensor to collect information about the vehicle's position in the lane and send commands to the actuator to influence the lateral movement of the vehicle if necessary. Recently, vehicles equipped with LKAS have become commercially available. Test procedures for international LKAS evaluation are being discussed and developed by international committees, such as the International Organization for Standardization and United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. In Korea, an evaluation of LKASs for car safety is being planned by the Korean New Car Assessment Program. Therefore, test procedures should be developed for LKASs that are suitable for the domestic road environment while accommodating international standards. We developed a test scenario for LKASs and propose a formula for obtaining the target relative distance. To validate the methods, a series of experiments were conducted using commercially available vehicles equipped with LKAS.

In 2014, there were approximately 4,762 fatalities on Korean roads. The fatality rate has decreased by 6.5 %, as compared to that of the previous year. The pedestrian-vehicle fatalities (1,795) have also decreased by 6 % over the previous year. However, the percentage of the pedestrian fatalities has increased from 37.9 % to 38.7 % during the same period. This is why further research is required, even though the KNCAP pedestrian safety assessment and KMVSS for pedestrian protection currently exist. This paper studied the Upper Legform to Bonnet Leading Edge Test at the front of the vehicles, which has not been introduced yet in Korea. The test method and procedure of the new BLE test in the Euro NCAP test protocol have been reviewed, and the physical tests on SUV and sedan with different bonnet leading edge heights have also been conducted and reviewed. In addition, the test results and characteristics have been analyzed via comparison with the former BLE test and each vehicle type.
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause (70%) of children injury and fatality. 98% of Children under the age of 9 who came to emergency room with a traffic accident are not seated in CRS. Reduction in mortality when using CRS (NHTSA study), 71% for infants of 1-2 years old, 54% for 3-6 years old and 7-12 years old. It is very important and essential to use CRS for child passenger safety. But in Korean market, the CRS fitment rate is relatively low (20~40%). For European market, at the start of 2013, Euro NCAP started to check how easy it is to install the most common seats. And US market, NHTSA is planning a new consumer information program of CRS fitment for near future. This study examines CRS installation performance of 3 vehicles which are produced by GM Korea and 21 CRS which are based on sales volume in Korean market. Purpose of this study is to identify both vehicle and CRS design that causes bad interaction for CRS installation.
AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking system), a system in which vehicles automatically recognize forward objects or pedestrians and actively brake when forward collisions are expected, has been mandated by NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) for all vehicles sell in the United States since 2022, and AEB research is also actively underway in korea. In this study, it can be confirmed that the passenger injury is reduced according to the AEB detection distance when it is assumed that the AEB is mounted in the actual event generated from KIDAS (Korea New Car Assessment Program) data through various analysis programs.

ISO 26262 is applied to vehicle and electrical/electronic component manufacturers for minimizing car accidents and life damage by the extended use of electronic control equipments and their malfunctions. In this standard, safety requirements are required to be applied from the early stage of development upto manufacture and disposal stages throughout the total lifecycle of the full vehicular system, and electromagnetic compatibility must be also managed as an important consideration factor. Therefore, it is nowadays very necessary to research and develop EFS(EMC for Functional Safety) to be applied in each stage of the design, manufacture, accreditation, use, maintenance stages of cars. In this paper, how EFS can be applied for the application of ISO 26262 is described. By the enforcement of this suggestions into the legal requirement or New Car Assessment Program(NCAP) test items, it is necessary that car manufacturer have to perform some procedures for ensuring car safety by themselves.
