Recently, KARI developed "KOMPSAT-2 Terminal for Polar Station" which is high performance system newly required for stimulating KOMPSAT-2 application. The KOMPSAT-2 Terminal for Polar Station consists of one receiving system and two processing systems. The receiving system has been installed at Svalbard Satellite Station located at Norwegian Svalbard island. and the two receiving systems have been installed at Kongsberg Satellite Service AS located at Tromso Norway and Spot Image SA located at Toulouse France respectively. In this paper overall items of KOMPSAT-2 Terminal for Polar Station, which includes requirements, designs and operation concepts, are to be addressed with the verification result on its performance.
KOMPSAT -2 equipped with an optical telescope(MSC) will be launched in this year. It can take images of the earth with push-broom scanning at altitude 685Km. Its resolution is 1m in panchromatic channel with a swath width of 15 km After the MSC is tested and the performance is measured at instrument level, it is installed on satellite. The image passes through the electro-optical system, compression and storage unit and fmally downlink sub-systems. This integration procedure necessitates the functional test of all subsystems participating in the image chain. The objective of functional test at satellite level(Quick Look test) is to check the functionality of image chain by real target image. Collimated moving image is input to the EOS in order to simulate the operational environments as if KOMPSAT -2 is being operated in orbit. The image chain from EOS to data downlink subsystem will be verified through Quick Look test. This paper explains the Quick Look test of KOMPSAT -2 and compares the taken images with collimated input ones.

The 2nd KOrea Multi-Purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT -2) has been developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) since 2000. Multi Spectral Camera (MSC) is the payload for KOMPSAT -2, which will provide the observation imagery around Korean peninsula with high resolution. KOMPSAT-2 has adopted X-band Tracking System (XTS) for transmitting earth observation data to ground station. For this, data which describes and controls the pre-defined motion of each on-board X-Band antenna in XTS, must be transmitted to the spacecraft as S-Band command and it is called as Tracking Parameter Files (TPF). In this paper, the result of the development of TPF Generation S/W for KOMPSAT-2 X-Band Antenna Motion Control.
The Korea Multi-Purpose SATellite-2 (KOMPSAT -2) will be launched into a circular sun synchronous orbit in Dec. 2005. For the mission operation of the KOMPSAT-2 satellite, KARl Ground Station (KGS) consists of the Mission Control Elements (MCE), Image Reception & Processing Elements (IRPE) and the overseas stations. For the oversea stations, the Kongsberg Satellite Services (KSAT) is the prime supplier of support service. KSAT has the capability to provide Tracking Telemetry and Commanding (TT&C) nominal, contingency and anomaly support for every single orbit for most polar orbiting satellites. Also KSAT provides nodal service through the network management functionality for all oversea ground stations. This paper describes the oversea stations and the support for Launch and nominal TT&C services for KOMPSAT-2 and the operation plan for KOMPSAT-2.
This research deals with algorithm for forest fire severity classification using multi-temporal KOMPSAT-3A image to mapping forest fire areas. The recent satellite of the KOMPSAT series, KOMPSAT-3A, demonstrates high resolution and multi-spectral imagery with infrared and high resolution electro-optical bands. However, there is a lack of research to classify forest fire severity using KOMPSAT-3A. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze forest fire severity using KOMPSAT-3A images. In addition, this research used pre-fire and post-fire Sentinel-2 with differenced Normalized Burn Ratio (dNBR) to taking for burn severity distribution map. To test the effectiveness of the proposed procedure on April 4, 2019, Gangneung wildfires were considered as a case study. This research used the probability density function for the classification of forest fire damage severity based on R software, a free software environment of statistical computing and graphics. The burn severities were estimated by changing NDVI before and after forest fire. Furthermore, standard deviation of probability density function was used to calculate the size of each class interval. A total of five distribution of forest fire severity were effectively classified.

The LEOP Cal/Val (Launch and Early Operation Phase Calibration/Validation) was carried out during 6 months after KOMPSAT-3A (KOMPSAT-3A Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-3A) was launched in March 2015. After LEOP Cal/Val was successfully completed, high resolution KOMPSAT-3A has been successfully distributing to users over the past 8 years. The sub-meter high-resolution satellite image data obtained from KOMPSAT-3A is used as basic data for qualitative and quantitative information extraction in various fields such as mapping, GIS (Geographic Information System), and national land management, etc. The KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) periodically checks and manages the quality of KOMPSAT-3A's product and the characteristics of satellite hardware to ensure the accuracy and reliability of information extracted from satellite data of KOMPSAT-3A. To minimize the deterioration of image quality due to aging of satellite hardware, payload and attitude sensors of KOMPSAT-3A, continuous improvement of image quality has been carried out. In this paper, the Cal/Val work-flow defined in the KOMPSAT-3A development phase was illustrated for the period of before and after the launch. The MTF, SNR, and location accuracy are the key parameters to estimate image quality and the methods of the measurements of each parameter are also described in this work. On the basis of defined quality parameters, the performance was evaluated and measured during the period of after LEOP Cal/Val. The current status and characteristics of MTF, SNR, and location accuracy of KOMPSAT-3A from 2016 to May 2020 were described as well.
The KOMPSAT-3A satellite acquires high-resolution MWIR images twice a day compared to conventional Earth observing satellites. New radiometric information of Earth's surface can be provided due to different characteristics from existing SWIR images or TIR images. In this study, the difference image of multitemporal images was generated and compared with existing infrared images to find the characteristics of KOMPSAT-3A MWIR satellite images. A co-registration was performed and the difference between pixel values was minimized by using PIFs (Pseudo Invariant Features) pixel-based relative normalization. The experiment using Sentinel-2 SWIR image, Landsat 8 TIR image, and KOMPSAT-3A MWIR image showed that the distinction between artifacts in the difference image of KOMPSAT-3A is prominent. It is believed that the utilization of KOMPSAT-3A MWIR images can be improved by using the characteristics of IR image.
It is quite essential that requirements allocation and analysis would be done for the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of all units when designing a satellite. Although KOMPSAT-2 inherits relatively large portions of the electrical designs from KOMPSAT-1, it has a new instrument and different combinations of sensors and actuators as well as their driving circuitry. Many requirements for the electromagnetic compatibility were modified and newly allocated for KOMPSAT-2. Naturally, they must be justified through analyses from the early stage of the program. In this paper, the EMC compatibility requirements for KOMPSAT2 are presented and verified for their suitability. In addition, some results, which were obtained from various analyses, are presented and discussed.
KOMPSAT-2, to be launched in 2005, will be a long awaited addition to the existing high-resolution satellite sensors. The use of download facilities in Europe will greatly increase its capacity without loosing any coverage over Korea. In this paper the concept for an Urban Application Center is presented. It is part of the proposed Regional Application Center which is dedicated to archiving and distributing KOMPSAT-2 images. The Urban Application Center will offer services derived from KOMPSAT-2. Its aim is to promote the use of KOMPSAT-2 data and increase the general awareness and acceptance of satellite data.

The KOMPSAT-2 was developed by KARI and it was successfully launched from Plesetsk, Russia on 28th July 2006. The Korean government decided the commercialization of the KOMPSAT-2 image data and direct reception services worldwide. SPOT Image, based in Toulouse (France) was selected by KARI through an international open bidding as a foreign company for the KOMPSAT-2 image promotion over the entire world except the territory of Republic of Korea including the North Korea, the United States of America, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Yemen, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. KAI (Korea Aerospace Industry Ltd.) is an engaged Korean company for this area. KARI has responsibility to operate the satellite, data acquisition, archiving for the worldwide commercialization. For the processing and delivery of the KOMPSAT-2 image data to the users of KAI and SPOT Image, KAI has the binding contract with KARI. So KAI has the responsibility for the commercial ground station operation such as user support, data processing, and the data delivery. The KOMPSAT-2 ground station is hosted in KARI, so KARI has developed the concept of KOCUST (KOMPSAT-2 Commercial User Support Team) jointly with KAI to support the data processing and delivery as KOMPSAT-2 developer and satellite operator. The main purpose of the KOCUST is to support the operational activities to provide the data and service quality to satisfy customers. KOCUST will be organized by the members of KARI and KAI together. KARI members will mainly take the role of KOCUST coordination, data processing and user support in a public sector. KAI members are going to take user desk, data validation and delivery et cetera, which are related with users. This paper describes a summarized concepts of KOCUST like organization, dedicated tasks of each part and work flow of daily operation.
