Uruguay ? Brazil Inland Waterway Transportation System Defining the Right Vessel

  • Within the frame of the MERCOSUR (South Common Market), one of the most important goals to achieve by its member states is a better cost effective international cargo transportation system. For this purpose the project of developing a commercial waterway linking the east region of Uruguay with the south of Brazil has been under study for a number of years now. Because of the high costs involved on the development of such waterway, the project has been indefinitely delayed. It is our intention to show an alternative way to reduce the present obstacles by using a budget oriented approach in order to determine the vessel best suited to use on the proposed waterway. So far, every study related to the project has been focused on the amount of work needed to modify the environment in order to accommodate the hardware already available in the region. The conclusions show that the cost of opening and maintaining the required navigation channel is high enough to discourage investment; the added responsibility to take care of any environmental damage incurred during the building and/or operation of the waterway makes searching for a less costly and hazardous option an interesting challenge. The proposed terminal on the Cebollat? River would be located at the heart of the Uruguayan rice growing region. Uruguay exports 90% of its rice production, being Brazil its biggest buyer. Wood chips and clinker are the other types of cargo considered to use the proposed waterway in route to either Brazil or to overseas destinations through the deep water port of Rio Grande. Through the analysis of local data by a Geographical Information System, international regulations regarding inland waterways and shallow draught vessel characteristics, we seek to propose a cost efficient alternative to apply on this particular scenario.

  • 우리나라 발효음식 중 콩과 고춧가루를 이용한 발효식품인 고추장은 다양하게 조리에 응용하며 매운맛, 단맛, 짠맛이 어우러진 맛을 가졌고, 단백질, 탄수화물, 캡사이신, 비타민, 무기질 등 다양한 영양소가 함유된 전통발효식품이다. 전통발효방법에 의하여 정통성을 유지하고 우수한 생리활성을 유지하면서 세계인들에게 적용할 수 있는 조리 형태는 소스이므로 고추장의 독특한 향미와 맛, 영양적 가치를 가진 우리의 전통식품인 고추장을 세계적 식품으로 발전시키고저 고추장의 물성 및 매운맛을 조절하여 소스로서 사용하기 편하도록 편의성을 향상시킨 소스를 개발하여 스테이크, 튀긴음식, 피자등에 응용하고자한다. 이를 위해서 세계적소스의 품질특성조사를 통하여 전통고추장을 변형한 소스에 적용하여 물성, 매운맛의 정도를 달리하여 다양한 요리에 적용할 수 있는 소스를 제시하고저 강한 붉은색을 띠며 (L값: 12.11-->24.4) 산도를 조절하여 토마토 페이스트와 1:1 혹은 1.5:1로 조절하여 고추장 소스를 개발하여 관능검사 결과 소스로의 전환에 긍정적인 결과를 얻었다.

  • 컴퓨터, 디지털 카메라, 스캐너 등을 이용하여 문서나 화상을 작성한다든지, 서류 데이터를 디지털 데이터로 만드는 것이 일반화되고 있다. 그 결과 축적된 디지털 데이터가 가속도적으로 증가하고 있다. 부서단위, 회사단위로 생성되는 방대한 디지털 데이터를 단순히 파일로서, 공유 서버에 축적하는 것은 양적으로도, 이용효율 면에서도 한계에 달하고 있다. 이러한 문제들을 해결하기 위해서 다양한 검색(자기조직화 화상검색 전문검색(全文檢索) 관련검색) 기술과 DVD 체인저 제어기술, 3차원 그래픽 기술을 통합한 문서관리 시스템을 구축하였다. 이 시스템에 의해 테라바이트 급 데이터를 간단히 축적 검색 표시, 나아가서 Web을 통합하여, 광범위하게 데이터를 보낼 수 있게 되었다.

일본 서부 낙엽활엽수림의 차단 강수가 토양호흡에 미치는 영향 평가 (Experimental Estimation of the Effect of Rainfall Interception on Soil Respiration in a Broad-leaved Deciduous Forest in Western Japan)

  • 강우가 토양 호흡에 미치는 영향을 평가하기 위해, 일본 서부에 위치한 활엽수림에서 2001년 2월 20일부터 11월 19일까지 강우를 차단한 상태에서 토양 $CO_2$ 플럭스를 측정하였다. 강우가 차단된 관측지의 토양 호흡($F_c$)의 일변화는 0.2m 깊이의 토양 온도의 일변화와 매우 비슷하였으며, 자정에 최고값을 보이고 정오에서 이른 오후 사이에 최저값을 나타내었다. 이러한 뚜렷한 일변화 패턴은 같은 관측지에서 강우가 차단되지 않은 상태에서 관측된 선행연구의 결과(뚜렷한 일변화의 부재)와 대조되었다. 또한, 자연상태의 가능토양호흡(potential soil respiration, $F_{cal}$)의 크기와 비교할 때, 강우가 차단된 관측지의 토양호흡은 매우 큰 차이(예를 들면, 토양수분이이 부족할 때 약 50% 감소)를 보였다. 이 연구결과는 강우가 토양 $CO_2$ 플럭스의 크기뿐만이 아니라 토양온도의 연직 프로파일을 바꿈으로써 토양호흡의 일변화 양상에도 영향을 미침을 보여준다.

  • 최근 기후변화로 인한 지속적 자연재해 증가에 대비하여 강력한 방재시스템을 구축하는 것이 중요하다. 더욱이 재해발생시 행정력이 미치는 범위는 한정되기 때문에 주민 자율에 의한 재난 방지 시스템은 더욱 강력해야 한다. 본 연구는 재난에 대한 보호기관과 관리기관의 역할과 이러한 역할에 대한 주민들의 인지도에 관한 연구이며, 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 1) 재난 대비 상호지원기관은 하드웨어 부문에서 관리기관에 의존하고 있다. 2) 소프트웨어 영역에서 재해로부터 보호하는 일부 시스템은 기관의 통제를 받고 특정 부분은 관리 기관의 통제를 받는다. 3) 대피소는 모든 재난에 대처할 수 없기 때문에 지역내 존재하는 다양한 시설을 대피 장소로 활용해야한다, 4) 도시 내에서 일하는 직장인들은 재난 대책 조직에 대해 숙지하고 있으며, 재난 지도를 잘 인식하는 경향이 있어 방재활동의 중심적 담당자로 역할을 할 수 있다고 생각된다.

CHARACTERISTICS OF SELF-LEVELING BEHAVIOR OF DEBRIS BEDS IN A SERIES OF EXPERIMENTS

  • During a hypothetical core-disruptive accident (CDA) in a sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR), degraded core materials can form roughly conically-shaped debris beds over the core-support structure and/or in the lower inlet plenum of the reactor vessel from rapid quenching and fragmentation of the core material pool. However, coolant boiling may ultimately lead to leveling of the debris bed, which is crucial to the relocation of the molten core and heat-removal capability of the debris bed. To clarify the mechanisms underlying this self-leveling behavior, a large number of experiments were performed within a variety of conditions in recent years, under the constructive collaboration between the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) and Kyushu University (Japan). The present contribution synthesizes and gives detailed comparative analyses of those experiments. Effects of various experimental parameters that may have potential influence on the leveling process, such as boiling mode, particle size, particle density, particle shape, bubbling rate, water depth and column geometry, were investigated, thus giving a large palette of favorable data for the better understanding of CDAs, and improved verifications of computer models developed in advanced fast reactor safety analysis codes.

전통주의 제조방법별 발효 특성 및 숙성후 품질변화 비교 (Comparison of Fermentation Characteristics of Korean Traditional Alcoholic Beverages Prepared by Different Brewing Methods and Their Quality Changes after Aging)

  • Fermentation characteristics and quality changes of the typical Korean traditional alcoholic beverages (Kwahaju, Sokokju, Baikhaju, Samhaeju and Hosanchun) were investigated during fermentation and after aging, respectively. They were prepared by their own brewing methods with respect to the same contents of rice and Nuruk (Korean-style bran koji). The consumed total sugar content of the alcoholic beverages (Sokokju, Baikhaju, Samhaeju and Hosanchun) which were brewed with the multiple input steps of seed mash and raw material (ABMIS) was higher than that of the alcoholic beverage (Kwahaju) which was brewed with the single input step (ABSIS). The pH values of all the beverages were similar and were ranged from 3.2 to 3.6. The acidity of ABMIS were lower than that of ABSIS, but alcohol concentration of ABMIS were higher. The fermentation period of the alcoholic beverages with triple input steps was the longest among them. The inner temperature and microbial growth in all the beverages increased at each of input steps of the raw materials. Fusel oil content of ABMIS was lower than that of ABSIS. Major components of the fusel oil were iso-amyl alcohol, iso-butanol, n-propanol, ethyl acetate and acetaldehyde, and its minor components were methanol and n-butanol. The results on quality changes of the alcoholic beverages after aging showed increase of alcohol in ABMIS, but decrease of sugar and acidity. Fusel oil contents of Kwahaju and Samhaeju decreased to be ranged from 3.1% to 13.9% after aging, but those of Sokokju, Baikhaju and Hosanchun increased to be ranged from 10.9% to 23.0%. Sensory evaluation of ABMIS showed better scores than that of ABSIS. It was suggested that the brewing method with multiple input steps of seed mash and raw material was one of the methods to increase fermentation efficiency for brewing the Korean traditional alcoholic beverages.

수국 첨가량이 과하주의 발효 특성에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Different Contents of Nuruk Extract on Fermentation Characteristics of Kwahaju (a Korean Traditional Alcoholic Beverage))

  • Fermentation characteristics of kwahaju (a typical Korean traditional alcoholic beverage) base were investigated during fermentation with different contents of nuruk (Korean-style bran koji) extract. The nuruk extract which was prepared by incubating the mixture of nuruk powder and water at $25^{\circ}C$ overnight and by filtering it was used to be 0.6%, 2.7%, 5% and 10% (v/v). Total and reducing sugar contents as well as acidity of the kwahaju base with 0.6% nuruk extract were higher than those with 2.7%, 5% and 10% at the fermentation end. Final pH values of all the base samples were ranged from 3.3 to 4.1. Alcohol concentrations of the base samples with 2.7%, 5% and 10% nuruk extract were higher than those with 0.6%. Microbial growth rate was great and inner temperature was high in the sample with high content of nuruk extract, but fermentation period was short. Total sugar consumption and alcohol production increased as the content of nuruk extract increased, but total acid production decreased. The base sample with 10% nuruk extract showed the most excellent fermentation efficiency. Fusel oil content of the base sample with 2.7% nuruk extract was the highest (457.3 ppm), and those wity 5% and 10% nuruk extract were 438.9 ppm and 442.6 ppm, respectively. The sample with 0.6% nuruk extract had the lowest content (409.5 ppm). Sensory evaluation of both the kwahaju base and kwahaju mix with 25% and 40% alcohol by adding soju (Korean distilled liquor) showed that the base with 2.7% nuruk extract had the highest score, and that the kwahaju mix with 25% alcohol had higher score than that with 40%. The sensory results on overall desirability were consistent to those on color and alcohol concentration, and it turned out that the two factors were important to make kwahaju.

Short-Term Results of Hybrid Closed-Wedge High Tibial Osteotomy: A Case Series with a Minimum 3-Year Follow-up

  • Purpose: High tibial valgus osteotomy (HTO) is a well-established surgical procedure for patients with medial compartment osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. The hybrid closed-wedge HTO (CWHTO) procedure permits extensive correction in patients with severe deformities or patellofemoral joint OA. The aim of this study was to report the short-term results in a consecutive series of patients treated with hybrid CWHTO. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the clinical outcomes and radiographic parameters in 29 consecutive knees that underwent hybrid CWTHO to correct medial compartment OA at an average follow-up of 52.6 months. Clinical outcomes were assessed using the Lysholm score and knee scoring system of the Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA). The Kellgren-Lawrence grading system and pre- and postoperative mechanical axis (MA), femorotibial angle (FTA), posterior tibial slope, and patella height were assessed. Results: The FTA and MA significantly changed from $180.7^{\circ}$ to $170.4^{\circ}$ and from $22.0^{\circ}$ to $60.2^{\circ}$, respectively. No significant differences were observed between the mean pre- and postoperative posterior tibial slope, Insall-Salvati ratio, or Caton-Deschamps index. The postoperative JOA and Lysholm scores significantly improved from 76.7 to 95.8 and from 58.8 to 90.2, respectively. Conclusions: Satisfactory outcomes can be achieved with hybrid CWHTO in patients with medial OA.

Association of tumor differentiation grade and survival of women with squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix

  • Objective: To examine the association between tumor grade and survival for women with squamous cervical cancer. Methods: This retrospective observational study utilized the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Result program data between 1983 and 2013 to examine women with squamous cervical cancer with known tumor differentiation grade. Multivariable analyses were performed to assess independent associations between tumor differentiation grade and survival. Results: A total of 31,536 women were identified including 15,175 (48.1%) with grade 3 tumors, 14,084 (44.7%) with grade 2 neoplasms and 2,277 (7.2%) with grade 1 tumors. Higher tumor grade was significantly associated with older age, higher stage disease, larger tumor size, and lymph node metastasis (all, p<0.001). In a multivariable analysis, grade 2 tumors (adjusted-hazard ratio [HR]=1.21; p<0.001) and grade 3 tumors (adjusted-HR=1.45; p<0.001) were independently associated with decreased cause-specific survival (CSS) compared to grade 1 tumors. Among the 7,429 women with stage II-III disease who received radiotherapy without surgical treatment, grade 3 tumors were independently associated with decreased CSS compared to grade 2 tumors (adjusted-HR=1.16; p<0.001). Among 4,045 women with node-negative stage I disease and tumor size ${\leq}4cm$ who underwent surgical treatment without radiotherapy, grade 2 tumors (adjusted-HR=2.54; p=0.028) and grade 3 tumors (adjusted-HR=4.48; p<0.001) were independently associated with decreased CSS compared to grade 1 tumors. Conclusion: Our study suggests that tumor differentiation grade may be a prognostic factor in women with squamous cervical cancer, particularly in early-stage disease. Higher tumor grade was associated with poorer survival.
