  • In order to construct a feature map-based phoneme classification system for speech recognition, two procedures are usually required. One is clustering and the other is labeling. In this paper, we present a phoneme classification system based on the Kohonen's Self-Organizing Feature Map (SOFM) for clusterer and labeler. It is known that the SOFM performs self-organizing process by which optimal local topographical mapping of the signal space and yields a reasonably high accuracy in recognition tasks. Consequently, SOFM can effectively be applied to the recognition of phonemes. Besides to improve the performance of the phoneme classification system, we propose the learning algorithm combined with the classical K-mans clustering algorithm in fine-tuning stage. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed phoneme classification algorithm, we first use totaly 43 phonemes which construct six intra-class feature maps for six different phoneme classes. From the speaker-dependent phoneme classification tests using these six feature maps, we obtain recognition rate of $87.2\%$ and confirm that the proposed algorithm is an efficient method for improvement of recognition performance and convergence speed.

  • The recent fingerprint recognition system has unstable factors, such as copy of fingerprint patterns and hacking of fingerprint feature point, which mali cause significant system error. Thus, in this research, we used the fingerprint as the main recognition device and then implemented the multi-biometric recognition system in serial using the speech recognition which has been widely used recently. As a multi-biometric recognition system, once the speech is successfully recognized, the fingerprint recognition process is run. In addition, speaker-dependent DTW(Dynamic Time Warping) algorithm is used among existing speech recognition algorithms (VQ, DTW, HMM, NN) for effective real-time process while KSOM (Kohonen Self-Organizing feature Map) algorithm, which is the artificial intelligence method, is applied for the fingerprint recognition system because of its calculation amount. The experiment of multi-biometric recognition system implemented in this research showed 2 to $7\%$ lower FRR (False Rejection Ratio) than single recognition systems using each fingerprints or voice, but zero FAR (False Acceptance Ratio), which is the most important factor in the recognition system. Moreover, there is almost no difference in the recognition time(average 1.5 seconds) comparing with other existing single biometric recognition systems; therefore, it is proved that the multi-biometric recognition system implemented is more efficient security system than single recognition systems based on various experiments.

  • Benthic macro-invertebrates were seasonally collected in the Onchen Stream in Pusan, from July 2001 to March 2002. Generally 4 phylum 5 class 10 order 19 family 23 species were observed in the study sites. Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and various species appeared in headwater stream while Oligochaeta and Chironomidae were dominated in downstream sites. Community abundance patterns, especially the dominant taxa, Oligochaeta and Chironomidae, appeared to be different depending upon the sampling months. Oligochaeta was usually observed in July, December and March while Chironomidae was appeared in September. The biological indices, TBI(Trent Biotic Index), BS (Biotic Score), BMWP (Biological Monitoring Working Party)were calculated with the appeared communities of the sampling sites through the survey months. TBI showed 1 to 8, BMWP was 1 to 93 and CBI appeared 9 to 387 in the different sites. The biological indices decreased from headstream to downstream sites, We implemented the unsupervised Kohonen network for patterning of community abundance of the sampling sites. The patterning map by the Kohonen network was well represented community abundance of the sampling sites. Also, we conducted RTRN (Real Time Recurrent Neural Network) for predicting of the biological indices in the different sites. The results appeared that the predicting values by RTRN were well matched field data (correlation coefficient of TBI, BMWP and CBI were 0.957, 0.979 and 0.967, respectively).

  • A large-scale community data were patterned by utilizing an unsupervised learning algorithm in artificial neural networks. Data for benthic macroinvertebrates in streams of South Korea reported in publications for 12 years from 1984 to 1995 were provided as inputs for training with the Kohonen network. Taxa included for the training were 5 phylum, 10 class, 26 order, 108 family and 571 species in 27 streams. Abundant groups were Diptera, Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera, Plecoptera, Coleoptera, Odonata, Oligochaeta, and Physidae. A wide spectrum of community compositions was observed: a few tolerant taxa were collected at polluted sites while a high species richness was observed at relatively clean sites. The trained mapping by the Kohonen network effectively showed patterns of communities from different river systems, followed by patterns of communities from different environmental disturbances. The training by the proposed artificial neural network could be an alternative for organizing community data in a large-scale ecological survey.

  • Recently, neural network-based speech recognition has been studied to utilize the adaptivity and learnability of neural network models. However, conventional neural network models have difficulty in the co-articulation processing and the boundary detection of similar phonmes of the Korean speech. Also, in case of using one phonotopic map, learning speed may dramatically increase and inaccuracies may be caused because homogeneous learning and recognition method should be applied for heterogenous data. Hence, in this paper, a neural net typewriter has been designed using a hierarchical self-organizing classifier(HSOC), and related algorithms are presented. This HSOC, during its learing stage, distributed phoneme data on hierarchically structured multiple phonotopic maps, using Kohonen's self-organizing feature maps(SOFM). Presented and experimented in this paper were the algorithms for deciding the number of maps, map sizes, the selection of phonemes and their placement per map, an approapriate learning and preprocessing method per map. If maps are divided according to a priorlinguistic knowledge, we would have difficulty in acquiring linguistic knowledge and how to alpply it(e.g., processing extended phonemes). Contrarily, our HSOC has an advantage that multiple phonotopic maps suitable for given input data are self-organizable. The resulting three korean phonotopic maps are optimally labelled and have their own optimal preprocessing schemes, and also confirm to the conventional linguistic knowledge.

  • This paper suggests the development of dynamic forecasting model for short-term power demand based on Radial Basis Function Network and Pal's GLVQ algorithm. Radial Basis Function methods are often compared with the backpropagation training, feed-forward network, which is the most widely used neural network paradigm. The Radial Basis Function Network is a single hidden layer feed-forward neural network. Each node of the hidden layer has a parameter vector called center. This center is determined by clustering algorithm. Theatments of classical approached to clustering methods include theories by Hartigan(K-means algorithm), Kohonen(Self Organized Feature Maps %3A SOFM and Learning Vector Quantization %3A LVQ model), Carpenter and Grossberg(ART-2 model). In this model, the first approach organizes the load pattern into two clusters by Pal's GLVQ clustering algorithm. The reason of using GLVQ algorithm in this model is that GLVQ algorithm can classify the patterns better than other algorithms. And the second approach forecasts hourly load patterns by radial basis function network which has been constructed two hidden nodes. These nodes are determined from the cluster centers of the GLVQ in first step. This model was applied to forecast the hourly loads on Mar. $4^{th},\;Jun.\;4^{th},\;Jul.\;4^{th},\;Sep.\;4^{th},\;Nov.\;4^{th},$ 1995, after having trained the data for the days from Mar. $1^{th}\;to\;3^{th},\;from\;Jun.\;1^{th}\;to\;3^{th},\;from\;Jul.\;1^{th}\;to\;3^{th},\;from\;Sep.\;1^{th}\;to\;3^{th},\;and\;from\;Nov.\;1^{th}\;to\;3^{th},$ 1995, respectively. In the experiments, the average absolute errors of one-hour ahead forecasts on utility actual data are shown to be 1.3795%.

  • Difficult problems In implementing digital neural network hardware are the extension of synapses and the programmability for relocating neurons. In this paper, the structure of a new hardware is proposed for solving these problems. Our structure based on traditional SIMD can be dynamically and easily reconfigured connections of network without synthesizing and mapping original design for each use. Using additional modular processing unit the numbers of neurons find synapses increase. To show the extensibility of our structure, various models of neural networks : multi-layer perceptrons and Kohonen network are formed and tested. The performance comparison with software simulation shows its superiority in the aspects of performance and flexibility.

  • In this paper we described an approach to automation of visual inspection of solder joint defects of SMC(Surface Mounted Components) on PCBs(Printed Circuit Board) by using neural network and fuzzy rule-based classification method. Inherently the surface of the solder joints is curved tiny and specular reflective it induces difficulty of taking good image of the solder joints. And the shape of the solder joints tends to greatly vary with the soldering condition and the shapes are not identical to each other even though the solder joints belong to a set of the same soldering quality. This problem makes it difficult to classify the solder joints according to their qualities. Neural network and fuzzy rule-based classification method is proposed to effi-ciently make human-like classification criteria of the solder joint shapes. The performance of the proposed approach is tested on numerous samples of commercial computer PCB boards and compared with the results of the human inspector performance and the conventional Kohonen network.

  • We propose a two-stage document layout segmentation method. At the first stage, as top-down segmentation, morphological distance map algorithm extracts a collection of rectangular regions from a given input image. This preliminary result from the first stage is employed as input parameters for the process of next stage. At the second stage, a machine-learning algorithm is adopted RBF network, one of neural networks based on statistical model, is selected. In order for constructing the hidden layer of RBF network, a data clustering technique bared on the self-organizing property of Kohonen network is utilized. We present a result showing that the supervised neural network, trained by 300 number of sample data, improves the preliminary results of the first stage.

  • This study was conducted to nondestructively estimate the volumetric information of peach and pit and to visualize the 3D information of internal structure from magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) data. Bruker Biospec 7T spectrometer operating at a proton reosonant frequency of 300 MHz was used for acquisition of MRI data of peach. Image processing algorithms and visualization techniques were implemented by using MATLAB (Mathworks) and Visualization Toolkit(Kitware), respectively. Thresholding algorithm and Kohonen's self organizing map(SOM) were applied to MRI data fur region segmentation. Volumetric information were estimated from segemented images and compared to the actual measurements. The average prediction errors of peach and pit volumes were 4.5%, 26.1%, respectively for the thresholding algorithm. and were 2.1%, 19.9%. respectively for the SOM. Although we couldn't get the statistically meaningful results with the limited number of samples, the average prediction errors were lower when the region segmentation was done by SOM rather than thresholding. The 3D visualization techniques such as isosurface construction and volume rendering were successfully implemented, by which we could nondestructively obtain the useful information of internal structures of peach.
