  • This study aimed to reveal the designer's creative process in the development of clothing designs. The researcher has taken roles both as a design practitioner and an observer. The full process of design development was concurrently documented while working to solve a specific problem. This included noting down the concept, keywords, and detailed scratch ideas, as well as refining the design by collecting sketches and taking photos. Integrated data from the captured design process were analyzed based on Lamb and Kallal's apparel design framework, which included problem identification, construction of preliminary ideas, design refinement, prototype development, and evaluation. The functional, expressive, and aesthetic (FEA) criteria of the entire process were thus assessed. Additionally, five professional apparel reviewers evaluated the design project based on FEA criteria. The results showed the processes for identifying targets and intentions, extracting the main elements from sources, developing the major visual concepts, and making final adjustments. Ultimately, this study revealed how a designer manages each stage of the creative design process. Sharing such detailed observations of the design process can help refine the knowledge involved in each stage of the creative process, and provide guidance for instructors in design education.

  • If the stage of establishing concept in interaction design approaches only analytic and numeral & quantitative aspects, it would be lack of new and creative ideas of concept for the suitable and proper relationship among the human and tools or machinery which is required in interaction design. This study has explored the possibility of access through the research of diverse point of views in the various knowledge systems about the relationship. That is this study has expanded from improvement-intended approach as analyzing human and tools and solving problems with analytic and engineering aspect to value-intended approach as pursuing new ideas though various points of relationship. Or so, to examine 'Relationship' in other knowledge systems, it could be the basic research for more deepening and specific study in interaction design. To integrate this study, at first, it deals with interaction design and process. Through the specific method, it has investigated the current interaction design and related studies. • Purpose: This study investigated the effects of simulation-based nursing education (for the care of congestive heart failure patients) on self-directed learning competency, clinical knowledge and problem-solving ability among nursing students. Methods: A one-group, pre-post design was utilized with 87 nursing students as the subjects. The scenario of simulation-based nursing education was created using a high-fidelity patient stimulator, and consisted of four states ((1) assessment, (2) reviewing laboratory data and administering medications and treatments, (3) managing increased dyspnea and decreased urine output, and (4) handling the "getting better" state). The simulation-based nursing education included orientation, team-based learning, team-based practice, and debriefing. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients and paired t-tests. Results: The scores on the factors for self-directed learning competency (t=-2.57, p= .011), clinical knowledge (t=-6.85, p<.001), and problem-solving ability (t=-3.01, p= .003) increased significantly after the education intervention. Conclusion: Simulation-based nursing education is useful in improving self-directed learning competency, clinical knowledge, and problem-solving ability in nursing students.

  • In this paper a web-based micro fabrication system is discussed. A commercial CAD and a web browser were used as its user interfaces. For the user interfaces, the concepts of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) were implemented providing the fabrication knowledge of micro machining to the designers. Simple databases were constructed to store the fabrication knowledge of materials, tools, and micro machining know-how. The part geometry was uploaded to the web server of this system as an STL (Stereo Lithography) format with process parameters for 3-axis micro milling. A Slice-based process planner automatically provides NC codes for controlling micro stages. A couple of micro parts were fabricated using the system with micro endmills. This design and manufacturing system enables network users to obtain micro-scale prototypes in a rapid manner.

  • Efficient evidential reasoning is an important issue in the development of advanced knowledge based systems. Efficiency is closely related to the design of problems solving methods adopted in the system. The explicit modeling of problem-solving structures is suggested for efficient and effective reasoning. It is pointed out that the problem-solving method framework is often too coarse-grained and too abstract to specify the detailed design and implementation of a reasoning system. Therefore, as a key step in developing a new reasoning scheme based on properties of the problem, the problem-solving method framework is expanded by introducing finer grained problem-solving primitives and defining an overall control structure in terms of these primitives. Once the individual components of the control structure are defined in terms of problem solving primitives, the overall control algorithm for the reasoning system can be represented in terms of a finite state diagram.

  • Purpose Virtual communities (VCs) are becoming ever more important in these days, sometimes more than offline communities. Notably, they have become significant sources of knowledge sharing. Therefore, in order to foster a VC, it is very important to understand why people share their knowledge in the VC. Under this background, this paper aims at proposing the behavioral model best explains knowledge sharing activities in VCs. Design/methodology/approach We basically design our behavioral model for knowledge sharing in VCs based on theory of reasoned action (TRA). However, to understand knowledge sharing in VCs better, we specify knowledge sharing by dividing it into knowledge contribution and knowledge use. Also, instead of 'subjective norm', we adopt 'sense of virtual community (SOVC)' as a main social factor, which has been found to be important in the literature. We also include the antecedents such as 'quality of the shared knowledge', 'trust in community members', 'passion of the community leader', 'reciprocity', and 'self efficacy', which affect VC users' attitude towards knowledge sharing and SOVC. To test the hypotheses in our proposed model, we collected 253 valid surveys from the VC users. Structural equation modeling (SEM) using AMOS 23 is employed to assess the relationships proposed as the hypotheses. Findings Major findings are as follows. SOVC positively affects both intention to contribute knowledge and intention to use knowledge. And, trust in community members positively affects the attitude towards knowledge use and SOVC. The attitude towards knowledge use is also affected by the quality of the shared knowledge. Reciprocity is found to strongly positively affect the attitude towards knowledge contribution. However, passion of the community leader and self efficacy are found to have insignificant effect on SOVC and the attitude towards knowledge contribution respectively. Our study sheds a light on how to foster VCs from the perspective of knowledge management.

  • Despite all efforts, many product development projects fail and lead to an introduction of products that do not meet customers' expectations. In general, designers usually relies upon their past experiences of similar products as a source of design knowledge when they work on a new design project. Designers need a set of practical step-by-step tools and methods which ensure a understanding of customers' needs and requirements, as well as a past design experience knowledge. In this paper we propose a design initial value module for an excavator that proposes a key initial design parameter value in an early design stage to improve a design process on Customer Requirements. It makes possible to support designers more effectively, objectively, and easily. Also it can propose better products in terms of a customer satisfaction.
