Applied Computational Tools for Crop Genome Research

  • A major goal of agricultural biotechnology is the discovery of genes or genetic loci which are associated with characteristics beneficial to crop production. This knowledge of genetic loci may then be applied to improve crop breeding. Agriculturally important genes may also benefit crop production through transgenic technologies. Recent years have seen an application of high throughput technologies to agricultural biotechnology leading to the production of large amounts of genomic data. The challenge today is the effective structuring of this data to permit researchers to search, filter and importantly, make robust associations within a wide variety of datasets. At the Plant Biotechnology Centre, Primary Industries Research Victoria in Melbourne, Australia, we have developed a series of tools and computational pipelines to assist in the processing and structuring of genomic data to aid its application to agricultural biotechnology resear-ch. These tools include a sequence database, ASTRA, for the processing and annotation of expressed sequence tag data. Tools have also been developed for the discovery of simple sequence repeat (SSR) and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) molecular markers from large sequence datasets. Application of these tools to Brassica research has assisted in the production of genetic and comparative physical maps as well as candidate gene discovery for a range of agronomically important traits.

  • Knowledge management is an innovation paradigm to improve organizations competitiveness by strengthening organization's knowledge competency. Most organizations which have implemented knowledge management have experienced various difficulties in improving organization's knowledge competency, and so they have strived to find solutions. For the problems, it may be considered as an effective approach to link between knowledge management and human resource development. This study introduces two real cases adopting such approach focusing on competency development and career development which are primary areas of human resource development, and presents a model structuring core mechanisms which can be found in the cases. The model focuses on creating synergy effects between knowledge management and workforces' competency development. The cases and the model are expected to be helpful in enhancing organizational competency and the performance of knowledge management.

  • The study is intended to develop the measures to introduce the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) project manager (Environmental Assessor), who will be responsible for leading the EIA task. This role requires a quality standard of expertise in the area of natural science, social science, knowledge and technology on environment design mechanism, and the integrated approaches that combine the relevant policies and systems. To facilitate the system, the certificate will be given to the person who is well acquainted with the knowledge on EIA with relevant experiences, thereby authorizing them to coordinate the assessment task for reliable outcome. Hence, the need for introducing the system is very crucial. The EIA project manager, as a guide for an EIA project team, shall be the person who has a comprehensive understanding of the project, the knowledge about the principal for implementation of EIA and the expertise in structuring the management system, with a skill to maintain the good relationship with the people engaged in the project. To that end, it is highly recommended to set up such a certificate system to be incorporated in the college curriculum.

  • Translating expert knowledge into production rules has been the most difficult and time-consuming when building expert systems (Buchanan et al. 1983). Especially, buidling hierarchical structure, i. e. developing sequential or dominant relationship among production rules is one of the most important and difficult processes. Hierarchical relationship among rules has been typically determined in the course of interviewing human experts. Since this interviewing procedure is rather subjective, however, the hierarchically structured rules produced in terms of interviewing is widely exposed to the severe discussion about their validity (Nisbett and Wilson 1977 : Ericsson and Simon 1980 : Kellog 1982). We thus need an objective method to effectively translate human expert knowledge into structured rules. As such a method, this paper suggests the order anlaysis technique that has been studied in psychometries (Cliff 1977 : Reynolds 1981 : Wise 1983). In this paper we briefly introduce the order analysis and explain how it can be applied to building hierarchical structure of production rules. We also illustrate how bankrupcy prediction rules of small-medium companies can be developed using this order analysis technique. Further, we validata the effectiveness of these rules developed by the order analysis, in comparison with those built by other methods. The rules developed by the proposed outperform those of the other traditional methods in effectively screening the bankrupted firms.

  • The impact of social networking is varied from good to bad. Online activities have also been categorized into pros and cons of social networking, either as reported as hiding Internet activities among teenagers or killing loneliness among elderly. In terms of relationships, there have been argument over its closeness and quality of an online relationship in Internet settings. Looking at the contradiction in an innovative interaction between classic community communication and social media, there is an unknown scent of the future struggling and challenging both human communication and relationships in the presence of digital culture. This research uses Diffusion of Innovation to study the wide and continuous spread of digital culture in human communication; and, Media Dependency in learning and structuring the cognitive, affective and behavioral effects of social media on each person uses the media in different ways. This research will be using online survey to gain opinions from a social network site as an update of views and reflection of self-awareness to all levels of people. Social media like Facebook (FB) is perceived as a good tool of communication that it is able to bring closeness among the family members. The results show that social media like FB brings positive impact towards family members; it would help to build a better and harmonic society; and, relationships among family members and communication shall be improved and enhanced to the level of a united society.

A Social Cultural Approach to Illegal Digital Contents Sharing (디지털콘텐츠 불법 파일공유에 관한 사회문화적 접근)

  • Why illegal digital contents sharing happens? This study pays attention to the fact that file sharing is an exchanging behavior between people and it is expanding despite of an illegal behavior and proposes that it is necessary for the phenomenon to be understood from social cultural point of view beyond a personal dimension. Based on the social exchange theory, this study demonstrates effects of file sharing attitudes and continuity, regarding 'group norm', 'popular demand', 'reciprocity' and 'social solidarity' as main factors. The main findings of this study are as followed;- First, it is shown that a tacit agreement of a group on file sharing is a determinant of positive attitude to file sharing and the intent of continual file sharing. Second, it is not found that the social relationship factors that are regarded as potential influential factors on file sharing attitude have effects on file sharing behavior, except for 'group norm'. Unlike previous studies, the results may come from the fact that this study deals with an illegal behavior. The third finding indicates a structural relationship between social relationship factors. When members of a group have more amicable attitude to file sharing including silence or a tacit agreement on file sharing, more people ask illegal sharing of files that they need. Such public demand creates expectation of reciprocity. As reciprocity maintains, social connectedness is strengthened. Then, strong social connectedness escalates the intent to maintain file sharing. It is important to notice that this study promotes understanding of how digital contents sharing happens by structuring and demonstrating influential relationship between characteristic factors of the social relationship.

An Analysis of Pre-Service Teachers' Mathematical Content Knowledge about the Area of a Circle (예비교사의 원의 넓이에 대한 내용지식 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate mathematics content knowledge(MCK) of pre-service teachers about the area of a circle. 53 pre-service teachers were asked to perform four tasks based on the central ideas of measurement for the area of a circle. The results of this study are as follows. First, pre-service teachers had some difficulty in describing the meaning of the area of a circle. Quite a few of them didn't recognize the necessity of counting the number of area units. Secondly, pre-service teachers had insufficient content knowledge about the central ideas of measurement for the area of a circle such as partitioning, unit iteration, rearranging, structuring an array and approximation. Lastly, few pre-service teachers understood the concept of actual infinity. Most students regarded the rectangle as the figure having the approximation error instead of the limitation from rearranging the parts of a circle.

  • 본 연구에서는 비.반구조적 문제의 구조화 과정을 지원하는 지식기반(knowledge-based) 의사결정지원시스템을 설계. 개발하였다. 문제의 구조화란 당면한 문제에 대한 인식을 한 후, 문제의 핵심과 관련된 요인을 추출하여 그들간의 관계를 모델화하는 것으로서, 본 연구에서는 구조화기법으로 방향성 그래프구조인 영향도(Influence Diagram)를 채택하였다. 특히 본 연구에서 제시된 시스템은, 의사결정자가 지식베이스에 자신의 관심영역에 관한 지식을 저장하여 사용할 수 있도록, 영역독립적(domain-independent)인 쉘(shell)의 구조로 설계되었다. 개발된 프로토타입인 IDMS를 R&D 평가와 관련된 의사결정분야에 적용하여 그 구조화과정을 보임으로써 현실문제에의 적용가능성을 제시하였다.

  • Many decision problems in the real world have uncertainty and complexity. In many cases, decision makers do not have decision-analytic knowledge enough to solve a given decision problem. This paper developes a Decision Support System(DSS) that can be used for structuring decision problem into decision tree based on the concept of influence diagram and analyzing the decision problem by following Decision Analysis Cycle. This study suggests a DSS system(DACUL) in order to implement Decision Analysis Cycle using Lotus1-2-3. DACUL system has been developed in IBM XT/AT compatible PC.

Modeling Dynamic Business Rules using A Dynamic Knowledge Approach

  • Business Rules are formal statements about the data and processes of an enterprise. They present projections of the organization's constraints and ways of working on their supporting information systems. Therefore, their collection, structuring and organization should be central activities within information systems. In an enterprise, business rules are used to represent certain aspects of a business domain (static rules) or business policy (dynamic rules). Hence, regarding problem domains in the organization, business rules are classified into two groups: static and dynamic business rules. The paper introduces a new concept of business rules, Extended Dynamic Business Rule (EDBR) which contains the results of the occurrence of business rule's action. The focus of this paper is in the organizing, defining and modeling of such business rules using Mineau's approach. Mineau's approach is an extension of Sowa's Conceptual Graph theory.
