Objectives: This study aims to contribute to devising systems for family caregivers of dementia patients by examining the state of oral care of dementia patients, and depression and social support among family caregivers of dementia patients. Methods: Family caregivers of dementia patients in the metropolitan area were selected in this study. The inclusion criteria were individuals who have provided care for a dementia patient at home for at least six months and those who come in contact (including phone calls) with the patient at least twice a week. Results: Oral health knowledge of the elderly, caregiving burden, depression, and social support were examined. The mean scores for oral health knowledge of the elderly and caregiving burden were $57.11{\pm}16.94$ out of 100 and $17.33{\pm}8.61$ out of 48, respectively. Further, the mean caregiving behavior score, depression score, and social support score were $8.49{\pm}13.71$ out of 100, $5.11{\pm}3.05$ out of 10, and $72.75{\pm}17.03$ out of 100, respectively. Factors affecting oral health knowledge of the elderly were examined. The results showed that the level of oral health knowledge of the elderly increased with an increasing perception of a need for oral health education (p<0.05), caregiving burden (p<0.01), and social support (p<0.01). Conclusions: These findings suggest that developing and popularizing oral care intervention programs for family caregivers of dementia patients are necessary to ensure systematic oral care for dementia patients.
Purpose: This study was performed to identify the factors influencing the fear of dementia in middle-aged and older adults. Methods: Data on the characteristics, dementia knowledge, dementia attitude, dementia health beliefs, and fear of dementia of 156 participants were collected from January 20 to March 22, 2018, using a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed with the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program for descriptive statistics, using an independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: Significant factors associated with fear of dementia among middle-aged and older adults were subjective life satisfaction (F=3.72, p=.006) and regular exercise (t=6.05, p=.015). Fear of dementia has positive correlations with dementia attitude, perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, and perceived barrier. The determining factors affecting fear of dementia in middle-aged and older adults were perceived severity (β=.46, p<.001), followed by a perceived barrier (β=.20, p=.004) and perceived susceptibility (β=.17, p=.023), and the explanation power was about 47.8%. Conclusion: The results suggest that perceived severity, perceived barrier, and perceived susceptibility be considered in developing the nursing interventions to increase perceived severity, perceived susceptibility, and to decrease perceived barrier to dementia by evaluating dementia health beliefs to manage the fear of dementia among middle-aged and older adults.

The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyze the correlations between the knowledge of, attitudes toward, and service requirements for dementia among nursing students. A descriptive study design was used. The participants were 584 nursing students attending K university. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, the t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, and Pearson's correlation coefficients using the IBM SPSS 21.0 program. The mean score of dementia knowledge was low($15.86{\pm}4.58$). The area with the highest correct answer rate for dementia knowledge was life impact(64.2%) and the disease progression area(39.6%) was the lowest. The attitude toward dementia ($45.15{\pm}4.59$) and service requirements($89.88{\pm}9.38$) were relatively high. There were positive correlations between dementia knowledge and dementia attitude(r=.11, p=.008) and service requirements(r=.21, p<.001) and between dementia attitude and service requirements(r=.34, p<.001). Therefore, accurate knowledge of dementia was closely related to positive attitudes. In conclusion, this studyis expected to provide the basic data for the development, application and evaluation of dementia education programs for nursing students.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to contribute to the development of an oral hygiene care program for patients with dementia by understanding the oral care status and oral health knowledge of care workers and caregivers with regard to patients with dementia. Methods: For about two months from May to June 2018, a survey of care workers and caregivers working in long-term nursing homes and elderly-specialized nursing hospitals was performed, and 442 people were selected for the final analysis. The frequency and percentage were calculated to understand the oral care status and oral health knowledge regarding patients with dementia, and an independent t-test was conducted to determine the difference between the elderly oral health knowledge of care workers and caregivers. Multiple regression analysis was also carried out to examine factors affecting elderly oral health knowledge. Results: With respect to the factor of oral health education in elderly oral health knowledge, oral health knowledge was shown to be highest when participants responded that education was unnecessary (p<0.001), and regarding the will to participate in oral health education, oral health knowledge was highest when participants responded as having no desire to participate (p<0.05). Conclusions: These results suggest that a standard manual should be developed for the accurate and qualitative management of oral hygiene care tasks performed by care workers and caregivers who are in charge of oral care for patients with dementia in order to provide continuous and systematic oral care.

The purpose of this study was to identify the dementia knowledge, attitudes and preventive behaviors of hemodialysis patients. The participants were 128 hemodialysis patients at the Artificial Kidney Center in G hospital of P city. Data were collected by self-report questionnaires from September 22 to October 10, 2017. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and Hierarchical regression analysis with SPSS/WIN 23.0. Dementia knowledge was significantly different by education level (F=4.58, p<.01). The attitude toward dementia was different by age (F=3.08, p<.05) and education level (F=6.64, p<.01). The preventive behaviors were different by gender (t=-2.30, p<.05). Dementia knowledge was positively correlated with attitude toward to dementia (r=.189, p<.05) and attitude toward dementia was positively correlated with preventive behaviors (r=.280, p<.01). The influencing factor for preventive behaviors was attitude toward dementia (${\beta}=.319$, p<.01). Therefore, in order to promote dementia preventive behaviors in hemodialysis patients, an education program should be developed to improve dementia knowledge and positive attitude toward dementia.

This study examined the relationships among dementia knowledge, attitude, and preventive behavior of an urban-rural complex city. In this study, 483 subjects using welfare and health centers were selected from one urban-rural complex city. The data were collected using the questionnaires for dementia knowledge, attitude and preventive behavior. Data analysis was performed by descriptive statistics, t-test and ANOVA using SPSS 19 software. In both urban and rural areas, elderly more than 70 years of age, no spouse, less educated, and lower income had higher scores of dementia attitude. In addition, the dementia attitude scores were higher when they were thinking more of their bad health. In conclusion, there is a need to strengthen the training and programs for dementia's knowledge, attitudes and prevention activities by a spouse or family member in early elderly period.
The purpose of this study was to provide the elderly and their family kowledge about senile dementia and to get them to have positive attitude about senile dementia. The subjects were 204 elderly who lived in the whole country. The data were collected from Sep. to Dec., 1998, using a 36 items questionnaire and analyzed by SAS program for t-test, ANOVA. Scheffe test, Pearson Correlation Coefficients. The results were as follows: 1. The mean score of knowledge about senile dementia was $9.33\pm2.68$(range 0-15), The elderly who was unschooled, lived in Kyung Sang province, didn't have any hobby or interest, didn't access to informations about senile dementia got lower score than the others. 2. The examples of knowledge test items about senile dementia that the subjects above fifty percents answered uncorrectly were 'the patient of senile dementia doesn't die soon', 'senile dementia is uncurable disease', 'the symptoms of senile dementia is apparent in new and strange circumstances', 'the pood and lonely elderly is apt to have senile dementia'. 3. The mean score of attitude about senile dementia was $15.87\pm2.25$(range 0-20) and attitude about senile dementia was relatively positve. Attitude about senile dementia by general characteristic was not significantly different. 4. The examples of attitude test items about senile dementia to which the majority of subjects agreed were 'It is a pity to see the patient suffered from senile dementia', 'It is difficult to take care of senile dementia patient' and so on. 5. The correlation between kowledge and attitude about senile dementia was very low. Therefore this study suggests that it is crucial to educate the elderly and their family to induce positive attitude about senile dementia.
Background: The incidence of dementia in Korea is a serious social problem, as the number of patients with dementia is increasing with a decrease in the age of dementia onset dementia is associated with oral disease among various causes, but there is very low awareness of the relationship between dementia and oral health. Therefore, in view of the above, we aimed to check oral health promotion and dementia prevention behaviors and use them as basic data for preventing dementia. Methods: In this study, we conducted a month-long survey of people aged 40 years and above living in South Korea, and reclaimed 140 survey questionnaires. Frequency analysis was performed for the perception level of the relationship between dementia and oral health, and the demographic characteristics assessed according to the perception level. Independent t-tests were performed for the mean comparison between oral health promotion and dementia prevention behaviors. Correlation analysis was performed for the relationship between the three variables (oral health promotion and dementia prevention behaviors, the perception level of the relationship between them). Results: The results showed that groups with a high level of awareness of the relationship between dementia and oral health were more likely to develop oral health promotion and dementia prevention behaviors (p<0.01). In addition, the higher the level of awareness related to dementia and oral health, the greater the likelihood of oral health and dementia prevention behaviors (p<0.01). Conclusion: Therefore, we should try to improve dementia prevention and oral health promotion by providing accurate knowledge and awareness of the relevance between dementia and oral health.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of knowledge of dementia and attitude of dementia on preventive behavior of dementia in the elderly living alone. The subjects of this study were 101 elderly living alone in the community and data collection was from January 2 to 16, 2020. Data was analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 24.0 program by descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, multiple regression analysis. There was a positive correlation between preventive behavior of dementia(r=.42, p<.001). Exercise(β=-.26, p=003), subjective health status(β=.26, p=.003) and knowledge of dementia(β=.37, p<.001) were found to be factors influencing preventive behavior of dementia among the elderly living alone in the community. The results of this study suggest that it is necessary to develop some programs that include factors such as exercise, subjective health status and knowledge of dementia for preventive behavior of dementia.
As South Korea has become an aged society, the dementia rate has also been increasing. With the introduction of both de-institutionalization and community care in 2017, the importance of community-based care has increased. Perspectives on dementia have also been shifting from the medical model and social model to the person-centered model. This paper suggests ways to improve dementia service through analyzing the dementia knowledge of care-givers at ADS. The paper includes an FGI with the care-givers who have worked for more than 2 years. Based on such FGI, the paper draws sub-themes from 7 areas. Among the suggestions for improvement are: community-based service with daily routine practice, improving awareness of dementia for co-living, and person-centered service based on individuality and diverseness.
