  • Purpose: The aim of this project was to develop a patient safety-focused inservice education program for surgical nurse and to test the effects of this program. Methods: Methodological designs for instruments development, a pretest-posttest and a posttest design were employed. After the education, nurses' satisfaction, confidence, usefulness and application of 137 nurses were evaluated at 15 surgical units of a tertiary teaching hospital in Seoul, Korea. The education contents are 6 skill areas (infusion pump use, suction, chest tube drainage, oxygen administration, nebulizer use, insulin administration) and medication knowledge. Teaching methods were lecture, instructor demonstration, and 1:1 skill test. Descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon test, Spearman's correlation and Stepwise regression were used. Results: Satisfaction scores for skills and medication education were 4.00-4.21 (out of 5), The more performance frequency in 6 skills, the higher score in confidence as well as in usefulness and application, and the higher satisfaction with the program, the higher score in usefulness, application, confidence, and medication knowledge. Medication knowledge improved after the education (Z=-7,757, p<.001). Significant predictors of skill confidence were application of skills in job performance, medication confidence, and career in present unit. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that systematic and continuous inservice education will improve patient safety by promoting nursing quality.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the consumer competency of women in their 20-40s after consumer competency is classified into consumer knowledge, consumer attitude and consumer skill. Since these components can show differences based on the areas of consumption life, the areas of consumer competency are classified into financial management areas, trading areas and consumer citizenship areas. The differences in consumer competency based on marital status and the differences in variables affecting consumer competency by marital status are identified. The types of consumers are classified and characterized based on consumer competency and marital status. This sentence can immediately follow the previous one rather than start a new paragraph. The same goes for the other sentences below. First, the female consumer competency levels of the married group were generally higher than those of the single group. Second, consumer knowledge and consumer competency in financial management areas showed significant interaction effects between the marital status and employment status of demographic variables. Third, there were differences in factors affecting significant differences in consumer knowledge, consumer attitude, consumer skill and over all consumer competencies between the unmarried and married groups.

  • In Korea environmental education has been taught as a separate subject in school since 1995. Still it has not established its own individuality. The environment subject teaches many areas that are also taught by the other subjects. Its text focuses on the knowledge of ecology and pollution although it tries to help students acquire a desirable attitude for environmental conservation and participate in environmental activities. To achieve the goals of environmental education in school, the environment subject and the other subjects should take differentiated parts in environmental education. For example, the latter teach knowledge and skill related to ecology and pollution and the former encourages students to behave responsibly to environment. One of the ways for it to do so is to let students discuss current environmental issues based on knowledge and skill and make their own decisions. The teacher who is charged with the subject has to help students, with their own will, decide to do good to environment and sustainable society, but should not make them to decide according to their teacher's will. We need to deeply discuss, with open mind, what the environment subject will teach and how it will cooperate with the other subjects to effectively achieve the goals of environmental education in school. Without such partitioning it is difficult that the environment subject keeps its own individuality and justifies its existence.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the Jeju beach science camp program and to survey the participating students'' preference levels for the activities included therein. The camp programs were analyzed on the basis of the standards set for the HASA curriculum. The program's "manipulatory skill" area included many manipulatory and creative activities while the "inquiry area" included many basic and integrated inquiry activities. It was also indicated that the "knowledge area" included many activities appropriate for understanding concepts and principles while the "attitude area" included many activities appropriate for stimulating curiosity and enjoyment. Thus, it could be seen that the areas stipulated for the HASA curriculum were considerably consistent with the purpose of the science camp. The participating students showed preference for manipulatory and creative activities included in the program. They also preferred basic, inquiry level activities included under the area of "inquiry skills." It was identified that the students most preferred the conceptual stage included under the area of "knowledge" where they were required to grasp the common characteristics of events, things, and phenomena, as also the enjoyment stage included under the "attitude" area, where they were required to participate in pleasant science activities. These findings indicate that science camp programs should be composed of manipulatory and creative activities as well as activities that aim at basic research and the understanding of concepts.

Many researches say that science writing is helpful to extend students' science knowledge and scientific attitude. By the way, the researchers thought that science writing can also improve the science process skill if students participate in delicately organized learning program. In this study, we had contrived the teaching & learning strategy of science writing to improve science process skills. The learning program covers all field of Klopfer's process skills with various forms of writing; explaining writing, logical writing, critical writing, and creative writing. The learning program has been developed for 5th grade students in the regular classes in order to enhance science process skills as well as knowledge and scientific attitude. Not to miss any process skill or various kinds of writing, we used 3 dimensional frame. The axes of the frames are science process skills, forms of writing, and science curriculum contents. The students are given the final writing theme at the beginning of each chapter. They drill science process skills step by step during the classes, and have a chance to talk each other before the final writing. They practice writing skills from one sentence to full article by degrees. The effect of the program was examined by students' work and TSPS (Test of Science Process Skill). The result showed that 5th grade students had a meaningful progress in science process skills as well as knowledge and scientific attitude. we could confirm it with examining students' work in the class.
