Heterochromatic Knob Number And Karyotype in Korean Indigenous Waxy Corn by Giemsa C-banding Pattern of Mitotic Chromosome (C-banding 패턴에 의한 한국 재래종 찰옥수수 염색체의 Heterochromatic knob 수와 핵형)

  • A Giemsa C-banding method was used for the identification of somatic chromosomes and heterochromatic knob position in Korean indigenous waxy com (Zea mays L.). 5 inbred stocks were examined and their heterochromatic knob numbers ranged from 6 to 12. In comparison of homologous chromosomes of two stocks of YS-1 and MY-1, knob numbers, knob positions, arm ratios and relative length of chromosomes were different between the genotypes. The length of homologous chromosomes in YS-1 were generally larger than those of MY-1. The Giemsa method was proved to be useful for the identification of somatic chromosome and a C-banded diagram showing knob positions, arm ratios and relative length of chromosome could be used as a good tool to compare the characteristics of chromosomes of Korean indigenous waxy corn stocks.

  • A Giemsa C-banding method was used for the identification of somatic chromosomes and heterochromatic knob positions in Korean indigenous maize(Zea mays L.). Total of 10 inbred stocks were examined and their knob numbers ranged from 6 to 12. In comparison of homologous chromosomes of two stocks of Waesungri and PI 213749, arm ratios and relative length of chromosomes were different between genotypes. In comparison of arm ratios, all the homologous chromosomes except chromosome 2 were different each other. In comparison of relative length of chromosomes, that of chromosome 1 in Waesungri and PI213749 was 223.22 and 192.03 respectively. The relative length of homologous chromosomes in Waesungri were generally lager than those of PI213749. A C-banded diagram showing knob positions, arm ratios and relative length of chromosome could be used as a good tool to compare the characteristics of chromosomes of Korean indigenous maize stocks.

  • The paper presents control performance of a magnetorheological (MR) fluid-based haptic knob which is applicable to invehicle comfort functions. As a first step, MR fluid-based haptic knob is devised to be capable of both rotary and push motions with a single device. Under consideration of spatial limitation, design parameters are optimally determined to minimize a reciprocal of control torque using finite element analysis. The proposed haptic knob is then manufactured and its fielddependent torque is experimentally evaluated. Subsequently, in-vehicle comfort functions are constructed in virtual environment and make them communicate with the haptic knob. Control performances such as reflection force are experimentally evaluated via simple feed-forward control strategy.

  • Sometimes the problem occurs that a paper knob and a thread attached to a tea bag fall into tea water in pouring tea water into a conventional cup to extract bag type tea. A new cup was developed to solve that problem, which was formed with a thread groove(dia. ; about $1.5{\sim}2\;mm$, hight ; about $4{\sim}5\;mm$) in the upper end of the cup. As a result, the new cup with a thread groove is expected that a paper knob with a thread does not fall into tea water. In addition, the size of a paper knob and the length of a thread may be reduced 70%, respectively.

  • The combination of rapid prototyping(RP) and rapid tooling(RT) has a potential for rapid manufacturing of three-dimensional parts. In the present study, a new RP system transfer type Variable Lamination Manufacturing using Expandable Polystyrene Foam (VLM-ST), is proposed to fabricate net shapes of three-dimensional prototypes. Various three-dimensional parts, such as a knob shape and a human head shape, are manufactured by the VLM-ST apparatus. In addition, a new rapid tooling technology, which utilizes a room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) molding technique and a triple reverse process technique, is proposed to manufacture net shapes of three-dimensional plastic parts using the prototypes of VLM-ST. A plastic part of the knob shape is produced by the proposed RT technology. The combination of the proposed RP and RT enables the manufacture of a plastic knob within two days.

Evidence of Cortical Reorganization in a Monoparetic Patient with Cerebral Palsy Detected by Combined Functional MRI and TMS

  • The motor recovery mechanism of a 21-year-old male monoparetic patient with cerebral palsy, who had complained of a mild weakness on his right hand since infancy, was examined using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). The patient showed mild motor impairment on the right hand. MRI located the main lesion on the left precentral knob of the brain. fMRI was performed on this patient as well as 8 control subjects using the Blood Oxygen Level Dependent technique at 1.5 T with a standard head coil. The motor activation task consisted of finger flexionextension exercises at 1 Hz cycles. TMS was carried out using a round coil. The anterior portion of the coil was applied tangentially to the scalp at a 1.0 cm separation. Magnetic stimulation was carried out with the maximal output. The Motor Evoked Potentials (MEPs) from both Abductor Pollicis Brevis muscles (APB) were obtained simultaneously. fMRI revealed that the unaffected (right) primary sensori-motor cortex (SM1), which was centered on precentral knob, was activated by the hand movements of the control subjects as well as by the unaffected (left) hand movements of the patient. However, the affected(right) hand movements of the patient activated the medial portion of the injured precentral knob of the left SM1. The optimal scalp site for the affected (right) APB was located at 1 cm medial to that of the unaffected (left) APB. When the optimal scalp site was stimulated, the MEP characteristics from the affected (right) APB showed a delayed latency, lower amplitude, and a distorted figure compared with that of the unaffected (left) APB. Therefore, the motor function of the affected (right) hand was shown to be reorganized in the medial portion of the injured precentral knob.

  • The height of valve body is limited to 30mm in the cook-top style gas valves for the domestic gas ranges. But the all the safety specifications of KS should be fulfilled and the magnetic power unit(MPU) should be installed in the valve body for the safety reason. The length of MPU body is longer than the 30mm that it should be located in the square direction of the knob shaft and therefore the implementation of the lever mechanism to transmit the press motion of the knob to the MPU valve is very difficult. In this paper, the hinged lever with inclined plate is used to transmit the press motion of the knob to the MPU valve. The analysis of the gas flow with using the commercial software of FLOW-3D shows that the gas flow capacity is fit for the domestic gas range. The performance and responsibility of the valve is tested for the mass production and the test results shows that the valve can be installed in the commercial gas range.

  • Recently, life cycle and lead-time of products have been shortened with the demand of customers. Therefore, it is important to reduce time and cost at the step of manufacturing trial molds. High speed machining can be applied for this kind of purpose with a lot of practical advantages. In our research, several fundamental experiments are carried out to obtain machining parameters such as cutting force, machining time and surface characteristics for tool paths that are appropriate to high-speed machining. Moreover, a trial mold for an automatic transmission knob is fabricated with aluminum-7075 material. Using automatic set-up equipments, an ABS rapid prototype of a trial product of an AT knob is also manufactured with a filling process.

Identification of polymorphic loci in the deiodinase 2 gene and their associations with head dimensions in geese

  • Objective: This study was conducted to clone and compare the molecular characteristics of the deiodinase 2 (DIO2) gene between Sichuan White geese and Landes geese, and to analyze the association between polymorphisms of the DIO2 gene and head dimensions in Tianfu meat geese. Methods: The coding sequence of the DIO2 gene was cloned by polymerase chain reaction and vector ligation and aligned by DNAMAN software. A total of 350 Tianfu meat geese were used to genotype the polymorphisms of the DIO2 gene and measure the head dimensions. Association analysis between the polymorphisms of the DIO2 gene and head dimensions was carried out. Results: An 840-bp coding sequence of the DIO2 gene was obtained and comparison analysis identified four polymorphic loci between Sichuan White geese and Landes geese. Further analysis showed that the dominant alleles for the four polymorphic loci were G, G, A, and T and the frequency of the heterozygous genotype was higher than that of the homozygous genotype in Tianfu meat geese. Compared to that in the population of non-knob geese of Tianfu meat geese, the head dimensions in the population of knob geese were significantly higher except for nostril height. However, in the non-knob geese, beak width 1, beak width 2, nostril length, cranial width 1, and maxillary length had significant differences among different genotypes or haplotypes/diplotypes. Conclusion: These results suggested that polymorphisms of the DIO2 gene could be considered molecular markers to select larger heads of geese in the population of non-knob geese.
