Extension of Kinetic Typography System Considering Text Components (요소를 고려한 키네틱 타이포그래피 시스템의 확장)

  • In the previous research, we proposed a Kinetic typography font engine that can easily add motion to text with function call only. However, since it is aimed at constructing movements for a sentence, there is still inconvenience in the production of various kinetic typography motions in word or letter unit. We propose Kinetic Typical Extended Motion API(Application Programming Interface) that extends Kinetic Motion API. The extended Kinetic Typographic Font Engine aims to simplify the process of making kinetic typography in words and letters, including the kinetic typographic motion library provided as a function. In addition, various applications that can apply Kinetic typography A kinetic typography authoring interface is provided for facilitating the construction of a motion library for the robot.

Design and Implementation of the Primitive Motion API for Kinetic Typography (키네틱 타이포그래피를 위한 기본모션 API 설계 및 개발)

  • The kinetic typography animates the static text and it will enable the delivery the opinion and emotion, but we should use professional software or do complex coding precess to create a motion into an existing static text. In this paper, we propose the primitive motion API which is the way to configure the kinetic typography easily by adding a motion into the static text. In the pursuit of this purpose, we analyzed the movement of the text, defined the underlying levels of the movement and designed the primitive motion API to express the kinetic typography promptly. Furthermore, we verified the performance of the primitive motion API by testing the usability. Using the primitive motion API to implement the kinetic typography explicitly might substitute for tedious coding process and usage of the existing professional software so it makes anyone be able to apply the kinetic typography in a variety of applications.

  • Typography, as the median for communication, has expanded its roles according the attributes of the media where it Is used, and the change of media follwing the change of times is presenting new directions to the field of typography. The attempts of 20C experimental typography prioritize visual formativeness, free typography and language started to appear on printed matters and different kinds of prints put pep in magazines. Thus, experiments in the aspects of effective delivery of inpormation that letters have and aesthetic side of shapes of letter are continuing. Today with the appearance of multimedia, development of visual colture and rapid development of digital technology, the range of experimental typography has expanded even wider and therefore, different kinds of expressions became possible. As seen above, unlike the existing static printed media that carries linguistic information only, letters in the multimedia environment is shown in the movie titles, TV or web not only as a basic visual media such as type and image, but as a dynamic and complex factor that contains additional information of motion and sound factor. This study will attempt to find the historic context of focus of moment from the kinetic art and define the moving letters as kinetic typography. Therefore, this paper will have an understanding on kinetic typography's background, concept and characteristics following the change of communication environment in the multimedia era and tried to study the basic theories of kinetic typography and the information delivery and imagery function of letters. Also, this paper attempted to carry out a study on whether kinetic typography is delivering information smoothly from the aspect of communication through the image role as delivering information by studying major works of artists who have influenced kinetic typography. Based on this study, I would like to suggest new direction for effective delivery of information and value of use.

Design of Kinetic Typography Interaction based on the Structural Characteristics of Hangul

  • Kinetic typography is technology such as color, scale, position of the letter changes dynamically with time and it communicates information with aesthetics and originality. The purpose of this study is to identify the design factors in the formativeness of Hangul and present and implement the interaction design method of unique Hangul kinetic typography based on the scientific structure of Hangul. We implemented the Hangul kinetic typography system, which varies in sizes and motion directions according to a viewer's movement and exhibited in a media art event. To do this, we used a viewer's skeleton information on typography synchronization. The results indicated that Hangul kinetic typography has potential not only as a means to communicate with viewers but also as a medium to show the artistic value of Hangul.

Hangul Legibility of Moving Reader and Kinetic Typography (키네틱 타이포그라피와 관찰자 이동 상황에서 한글판독능력)

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the legibility of Hangul characters in two situations; moving characters and moving observers. Background: The legibility study of Hangul has been primarily focused on the case in which a static observer reads static characters. With the advent of kinetic typography, characters have begun to move, and drivers have to read road signs while moving. Research on legibility of Hangul in a moving situation is needed. Method: In order to compare the legibility of Hangul in the context of observer movement and Hangul movement, the character size (visual angle of character = $2.5^{\circ}$, $5.5^{\circ}$, $8.5^{\circ}$), the reading time (1 Sec. 2 Sec. 3 Sec.), and the difficulty of the letter (the number of stroke in a character = 1~5, 6~10, 11~15) were set to be the same and the legibility was compared. Results: Under the same experimental conditions, the reading rate of moving observers was higher than that of moving letters. In both situations, the reading rate increased as the letter size and reading time increased and the difficulty of letters decreased. In the case of moving characters, the reading rate sharply changed with the change of the character size and the difficulty of the character. On the other hand, moving observers did not change sensitively to these changes. Conclusion: In contrast to the situation where moving observers read Hangul characters, the reading rate of the kinetic typography is sensitive to the difficulty of the character and the size of the character. Therefore, when designing the kinetic typography, it is necessary carefully to adjust the size and difficulty of the characters in consideration of legibility. Application: The results of this research will be helpful in designing kinetic typography and designing Hangul typography which should be read by moving observers.

Evaluating Pre-defined Kinetic Typography Effects to Convey Emotions (키네틱 타이포그래피를 통한 텍스트 기반 커뮤니케이션에서의 감정 전달 연구)

  • Kinetic typography has been suggested to express emotions in computer-mediated communication (CMC) by empowering static texts with dynamic attributes, where conversations occur primarily in text-based forms. In this work, we investigate whether pre-defined kinetic typography effects are capable of delivering emotions, and further, which specific attributes of kinetic typography arouse such emotions. The results show that emotional response of users were corresponding to the emotions intended by experts, indicating that pre-defined kinetic typography is an applicable way to express emotions consistently in CMC. Also, results demonstrate some key attributes that derive certain levels of mood and energy respectively. Energy level turned out to be affected by the font size, transparency, direction of movement, amount of movement, velocity, and acceleration of the text, while mood level was influenced by the transparency, direction of movement, regularity in movement, and speed of the text.

Kinetic Typography study on TV Entertainment Programs - Focused on <2 Days & 1 Night>, , - (TV 예능 프로그램의 키네틱 타이포그래피 연구 - <1박2일>, <런닝맨>, <무한도전>을 중심으로 -)

  • Up until about ten years ago, the use of typography played only an auxiliary role on broadcast television programs, primarily by transmitting information in order to facilitate a basic understanding of content. Recently, however, kinetic typography has become an important component in broadcast production. In fact, kinetic typography has developed into a visual language and a means of artistic expression, one that is increasingly used in the production of entertainment programs on television. This paper analyzes six aspects of kinetic typography: manner of development, location, intent, expressive techniques, color and font selection. Particular attention is placed on their use in three highly rated television entertainment programs: "2 Days & 1 Night", "Running Man", and "Infinite Challenge". The development way consists of the technique : starts off with cut and ends with cut. While, other techniques show conversation and situation representation using Z axis : zoom-in, zoom-out in , X axis : pan in <2 Days & 1 Night>. and Y axis : tilt in . Typographic design elements, expression technique, color, font are shown up according to the feature of each program. The resulting analysis suggests new ways for motion arts designers and the broadcast media to use kinetic typography in the development of television programs.
