  • This paper reports the study on coking rate and carbon formation route as a function of reaction temperature using the Ni catalysts in the $CO_2$ reforming of methane. In this paper, carbon deposition on catalysts and its kinetics during reforming reaction were studied by using a thermogravimetric analyzer. Kinetic studies show that reaction orders of carbon formation obtained 1.33 ($CH_4$) and -0.52 ($CO_2$) by experiments on partial pressure of reactant gas, respectively. On the basis of model equation, the kinetic parameters for the coking reaction at different temperatures indicated that methane decomposition dominated carbon formation at lower temperatures ($<600^{\circ}C$), while $CH_4$decomposition and Boudouard reactions become significant for coking in the temperature range of $600{\sim}700^{\circ}C$.

  • Ionic liquid immobilized on mesoporous amorphous silica was prepared from the coupling of 1-(triethoxysilylpropyl)-3-n-alkyl-imidzolium halides with tetraethyl orthosilicate(TEOS) through template-free condensation under strong acidic conditions. The immobilized 1-n-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium bromide ionic liquid on amorphous silica(BMImBr-AS) was proved to be an effective heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of dimethyl carbonate(DMC) from transesterification of ethylene carbonate(EC) with methanol. High temperature, high carbon dioxide pressure and long reaction time were favorable for the reactivity of BMImBr-AS. Kinetic studies based on two step reactions revealed that the proposed reaction model fitted well the experimental data. The apparent activation energy was estimated to be 67.4 kJ/mol.

  • This study examined the influence of operating parameters on the electrosorptive recovery system of lithium ions from aqueous solutions using a spinel-type lithium manganese oxide adsorbent electrode and investigated the electrosorption kinetics and isotherms. The results revealed that the electrosorption data of lithium ions from the lithium containing aqueous solution were well-fitted to the Langmuir isotherm at electrical potentials lower than -0.4 V and to the Freundlich isotherm at electrical potentials higher than -0.4 V. This result may due to the formation of a thicker electrical double layer on the surface of the electrode at higher electrical potentials. The results showed that the electrosorption reached equilibrium within 200 min under an electrical potential of -1.0 V, and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was correlated with the experimental data. Moreover, the adsorption of lithium ions was dependent on pH and temperature, and the results indicate that higher pH values and lower temperatures are more suitable for the electrosorptive adsorption of lithium ions from aqueous solutions. Thermodynamic results showed that the calculated activation energy of $22.61kJ\;mol^{-1}$ during the electrosorption of lithium ions onto the adsorbent electrode was primarily controlled by a physical adsorption process. The recovery of adsorbed lithium ions from the adsorbent electrode reached the desorption equilibrium within 200 min under reverse electrical potential of 3.5 V.

  • PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) has excellent mechanical properties such as low absorption, dimensional stability, abrasion resistance. It is used in manufacturing electronic components, the automobile part and the various precise parts. Bis (hydroxybutyl) terephthalate (BHBT) which is a PBT monomer, can be produced by transesterification reaction of DMT (dimethyl terephthalate) with 1,4-butandiol (BD). The kinetics of transesterification reaction of DMT with BD using zinc acetate as a catalyst was studied in a batch reactor. Previous kinetic studies was carried out in a semibatch reactor where generated methanol was removed so that reverse reactions were not considered in the kinetic expressions, resulting in inaccuracy of the kinetic model. Mathematical models of a batch reactor for the transesterification reaction were developed and used to characterize the reaction kinetics and the composition distribution of the reaction products. More accurate models than previous models was obtained and found to have a good agreement between model predictions and experimental data.

  • The kinetics of the transesterification of dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) with ethylene glycol (EG) was studied in a batch reactor. Bishydroxyethyl terephthalate (BHET), which is poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) monomer, can be produced by the transesterification reaction. Zinc acetate was used as a catalyst. Previous kinetic studies was carried out in a semi-batch reactor where generated methanol was removed so that reverse reactions were not considered in the kinetic expressions, resulting in inaccuracy of the kinetic model. Mathematical models of a batch reactor for the tranesterification reaction were developed and used to characterize the reaction kinetics and the composition distribution of the reaction products. More accurate models than previous ones were obtained and found to have a good agreement between model predictions and experimental data. Effect of process variables on the esterification reaction was investigated based on the experimental and simulation results.

  • Batch adsorption studies were carried out for equilibrium, kinetics and thermodynamic parameters for adsorption of coomassi brilliant blue G (CBBG) using activated carbon with varying the operating variables like initial concentration, contact time and temperature. Equilibrium adsorption data were fitted into Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. From estimated separation factor of Langmuir and Freundlich, this process could be employed as effective treatment for removal of CBBG. Also from Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm model, adsorption energy (E) indicated adsorption process is physical adsorption. From kinetic experiments, the adsorption reaction was found to confirm to the pseudo second order model with good correlation. Intraparticle diffusion was rate controlling step. Thermodynamic parameters like change of free energy, enthalpy, and entropy were also calculated to predict the nature of adsorption. The change of enthalpy (406.12 kJ/mol) indicated endothermic nature of the adsorption process. The change of entropy (1.66 kJ/mol K) showed increasing disorder in process. The change of free energy found that the spontaneity of process increased with increasing adsorption temperature.

  • The aim of this study is to compare k-$\varepsilon$ and k-$\omega$ closures under the condition of oscillatory layer flow at high Reynolds number. A one dimensional vertical model incorporated with flow momentum equations and turbulence models (k-$\varepsilon$ and k-$\omega$) is applied to the laboratory measurements in the turbulent oscillatory boundary layer. The numerical simulation reveals that both turbulence models calculate similar velocity profiles and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE). In addition, both deliver high accuracy under the condition of negligible spanwise pressure gradient. Therefore, it is recommended in this study to use k-$\varepsilon$ closure, of which numerical coefficients have been calibrated from many studies, for the cases of straight channel, estuary, and coastal environment where the spanwise pressure gradient is not significant.

  • In this study, the adsorption behavior from aqueous solution as well as kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of Acid Black 1 were investigated through batch reaction using coconut shell based granular steam activated carbon. The effects of various adsorption parameters such as pH, initial concentration, contact time, temperature were studied. To confirm the effect of pH, pHpzc measurements were analyzed followed by measuring removal efficiencies of Acid Black 1 at the pH range from 3 to 11. Experimental equilibrium adsorption data were fitted using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich adsorption isotherm. The conformity of adsorption reaction for pseudo first and second order model were evaluated through kinetic analysis. Values of enthalpy change and activation energy were also investigated through thermodynamic analysis and it was confirmed that the adsorption process was endothermic. The spontaneity of adsorption process was evaluated using the values of entropy and Gibbs free energy changes.

  • ${\alpha}-amylase\;and\;{\beta}-amylase$ were extracted from barley and wheat malt, respectively. Their kinetic parameters on gultinous and nonglutinous rice starch were examined. During the germination of barley and wheat, the increaments of ATP levels were significant after 2-day germination and the levels were reduced after 5 days. The dry weights were decreased after 3 days. The activities of amylases were the highest for 6 days in the barley and wheat malt. As for ${\alpha}-amylase$, that the substrate affinity of barley malt on nonglutionous rice starch was greater than other cases. The $V_{max}$ values of ${\alpha}-amylase$ from wheat malt on either type of rice starch showed high, and from barley malt on nonglutinous rice starch were high. The ${\beta}-amylse$ from barley malt showed high substrate affinity on the glutinous rice starch, and $V_{max}$ value of the enzyme from wheat malt on glutinous rice starch was higher than other. The substrate efficiency ($V_{max}/K_{m}$) of ${\beta}-amylase$ on the non glutinous rice strach was better than other cases.
