  • Kinetic energy release in the fragmentation of tert-butylbenzene molecular ion was investigated using mass-analyzed ion kinetic energy spectrometry. Method to estimate kinetic energy release distribution (KERD) from experimental peak shape has been explained. Experimental KERD was in good agreement with the calculated result using phase space theory. Effect of dynamical constraint was found to be important.

  • A method has been developed to estimate the kinetic energy release originating from the reverse critical energy in unimolecular ion dissociation. Contribution from the excess energy was estimated by RRKM theory, the statistical adiabatic model and the modified phase space calculation. This was subtracted from the experimental kinetic energy release distribution (KERD) via deconvolution. The present method has been applied to the KERDs in $H_2$, loss from $C_6H_6^+$ and HF loss from ${CH_2CF_2}^+$. In the present formalism, not only the energy in the reaction coordinate but also the energy in some transitional vibrational degrees of freedom at the transition state is thought to contribute to the experimental kinetic energy release. Details of the methods for treating the transitional modes are found not to be critical to the final outcome. For a reaction with small excess energy and large reverse critical energy. KERD is shown to be mainly governed by the reverse critical energy.

  • In order to evaluate the devolatilization models of pulverized coal, various devolatilization models are examined for the numerical analysis of Drop Tube Furnace. The results of analysis are compared with the experimental results. A numerical study was conducted to explore the sensitivities of the predictions to variation of the model parameters. It helps to elucidate the source of the discrepancies. Three different wall temperature conditions of the DTF, 1100, 1300 and $1500^{\circ}C$ were considered in this analysis. Two fuels are U.S.A. Alaska coal and Australia Drayton coal. The results of analysis with constant rate model, single kinetic rate model and two competing rate modes well presented fast volatile matter release in the early devolatilization. However, in the latter devolatilization they did not coincide with experimental results which presented tardy volatile matter release on account of pyrolysis of high molecular substance. On the other hand, the results of analysis with DAEM(Distribute Activation Energy Model) coincided with experiment al results in overall devolatilization.

  • When assessing the radiological consequences of postulated accident scenarios, it is of primary interest to determine the amount of radioactive fission gas accumulated in the fuel rod free volume. The state-of-the-art semi-empirical approach (ANS 5.4-2010) is reviewed and compared with a mechanistic approach to evaluate the release of radioactive fission gases. At the intra-granular level, the diffusion-decay equation is handled by a spectral diffusion algorithm. At the inter-granular level, a mechanistic description of the grain boundary is considered: bubble growth and coalescence are treated as interrelated phenomena, resulting in the grain-boundary venting as the onset for the release from the fuel pellets. The outcome is a kinetic description of the release of radioactive fission gases, of interest when assessing normal and off-normal conditions. We implement the model in SCIANTIX and reproduce the release of short-lived fission gases, during the CONTACT 1 experiments. The results show a satisfactory agreement with the measurement and with the state-of-the-art methodology, demonstrating the model soundness. A second work will follow, providing integral fuel rod analysis by coupling the code SCIANTIX with the thermo-mechanical code TRANSURANUS.

  • Methyl methacrylate-butyl methacrylate copolymer (MMBM)-dibutyl phthalate (DBP) films were investigated as a potential topical drug delivery system for the controlled release of nitrofurazone. The kinetic analysis of release data indicated that drug release followed a diffusion-controlled granular matrix model, where the quantity released per unit area is proportional to the square root of time. DBP of several hydrophobic plasticizers selected was found to give the highest release of nitrofurazone. However, hydrophilic plasticizers such as propylene glycol and polyethylene glycol 400 had no controlled release properties and acceptable film formation. The effects of changes in film composition, drug concentration, film thickness, pH of release medium, and temperature on the in vitro release of nitrofurazone were analyzed both theoretically and experimentally. The release rate constant (k') was found to be proportional to DBP content, pH, and the temperature of release medium, but independent of film thickness, and drug concentration in a range of 0.1-0.4% by weight. The linear relationship was found to exist between the log k' and DBP content. The release of nitrofurazone from MMBM-DBP (8:2) films was found to be an energy-linked process. Two energy terms were calculated ; the activation energy for matrix diffusion was 13.45 kcal/mole, and the heat of drug crystal solvation was 27.26-29.34 kcal/mole. Observation of scanning electron micrographs and microscopic photographs showed that the incorporation of DBP in films increased markedly the particle size of nitrofurazone dispersed in the film matrix, comparing with the fine dispersion of nitrofurazone in pure MMBM film alone.

  • This paper proposes a novel strategy for attenuating the output power fluctuation of the wind farm (WF) in a range of tens of seconds delivered to the grid, where the kinetic energy caused by the large inertia of the wind turbine systems is utilized. A control scheme of the two-level structure is applied to control the wind farm, which consists of a supervisory control of the wind farm and individual wind turbine controls. The supervisory control generates the output power reference of the wind farm, which is filtered out from the available power extracted from the wind by a low-pass filter (LPF). A lead-lag compensator is used for compensating for the phase delay of the output power reference compared with the available power. By this control strategy, when the reference power is lower than the maximum available power, some of individual wind turbines are operated in the storing mode of the kinetic energy by increasing the turbine speeds. Then, these individual wind turbines release the kinetic power by reducing the turbine speed, when the power command is higher than the available power. In addition, the pitch angle control systems of the wind turbines are also employed to limit the turbine speed not higher than the limitation value during the storing mode of kinetic energy. For coordinating the de-rated operation of the WT and the storing or releasing modes of the kinetic energy, the output power fluctuations are reduced by about 20%. The PSCAD/EMTDC simulations have been carried out for a 10-MW wind farm equipped with the permanent-magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) to verify the validity of the proposed method.

  • Disk brake system transforms a large amount of kinetic energy to thermal energy in a short time. As the size and speed of automotive increases in recent years, the disk brakes absorbs more thermal energy. And this thermal energy can cause an unacceptable braking performance due to the high transient temperature, that is attained at the friction surface of brake disk and pad. Although these high temperatures are one of the biggest problems. In this study, the overall thermal behavior of ventilated disk brake system was investigated by numerical method. The 3-Dimensional unsteady model was simulated by using a general purpose software package “FLUENT” to obtain the temperature distributions of disk and pad. The model includes the more realistic braking method, which repeats braking and release. The effects of several parameters such as the repeated braking, inlet air velocity and thermal conductivity on the temperature distribution were investigated.
