N III Bowen Lines and Fluorescence Mechanism in the Symbiotic Star AG Peg

  • We have investigated the intensities and full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the high dispersion spectroscopic N III emission lines of AG Peg, observed with the Hamilton Echelle Spectrograph (HES) in three different epochs at Mt. Hamilton's Lick Observatory. The earlier theoretical Bowen line study assumed the continuum fluorescence effect, presenting a large discrepancy with the present data. Hence, we analyzed the observed N III lines assuming line fluorescence as the only suitable source: (1) The O III and N III resonance line profiles near ${\lambda}$ 374 were decomposed, using the Gaussian function, and the contributions from various O III line components were determined. (2) Based on the theoretical resonant N III intensities, the expected N III Bowen intensities were obtained to fit the observed values. Our study shows that the incoming line photon number ratio must be considered to balance at each N III Bowen line level in the ultraviolet radiation according to the observed lines in the optical zone. We also found that the average FWHM of the N III Bowen lines was about $5km{\cdot}s^{-1}$ greater than that of the O III Bowen lines, perhaps due to the inherently different kinematic characteristics of their emission zones.

A Study on the Coast Topography using Real-Time Kinematics GPS and Echo Sounder

  • This research aims at investigation of accuracy potential of RTK(Real-Time Kinematic) GPS in combination with Echo Sounder(E/S) for the coastal mapping. Apart from this purpose, the accuracy of ambiguity resolution with the OTF(On The Fly) method was tested with respect to the initialization time. The result shows that the accuracy is better than 1cm with 5-minute initialization in the distance of 10km baseline. The seaside topography was measured by the RTK GPS only, on the other hand the seafloor topography was surveyed in combination of RTK GPS and E/S. Comparing to the volume of seaside measured by RTK GPS and digital topographical map, the difference of only $2\%$ was achieved. This indicates that the coastal mapping. As a result, it has been revealed that every possible noise in surveying could be corrected and the accuracy could be improved. The accuracy of GPS data acquired in real time was as good as that acquired by post processing. It is expected that it will be useful for the analysis of coastal geographic characteristics because DTM(Digital Terrain Model) can be also constructed for the harbor reclamation, the dredging, and the variation of soil movement in a river.

자트로파 유(Crude Jatropha Oil)에 대한 보일러 직접 연소 특성 (Experimental Study on Thermal Characteristics of Heat Exchanger Modules for Multi Burner Boiler)

  • We conducted a test of a direct burning of crude Jatropha oil (CJO) in a commercial boiler system. The fuel, crude Jatropha oil is not biodiesel which comes from transeterification process of bio oil, but it is pure plant oil. The higher heating value (HHV) of the CJO is 39.3 MJ/kg (9,380 kcal/kg) and is higher than that of a commercial heating oil, 37.9 MJ/kg. The kinematic viscosity of CJO is 36.2 mm2/s at $40^{\circ}C$ and 8.0 mm2/s at $100^{\circ}C$. The burner used in the test is a commercial burner for a commercial heatingoil and its capacity is 140 kW (120,000 kcal/h). We did a preliminary test whether the combustion is stable or not. The preliminary test was a kind of open air combustion test using the commercial burner with crude Jatropha oil. We found that the combustion can be stable if the crude Jatrophaoil temperature is higher than $90^{\circ}C$. We measured the flue gas concentration by using a gas analyzer. The NOx concentration is $80{\sim}100\;ppm$ and CO concentration is nearly 0 ppm at flue gas O2 concentration of 3.0 and 4.5%.

틸팅열차용 판도그라프의 틸팅 기구장치 및 가이드 트랙 형상 설계 연구 (The Study for Design of Tilting Mechanism and Guide Track of Pantograph for Tilting Train)

  • The development of tilting train has been required for speed-up on the conventional electric railroad due to the characteristic of Korean railroad with a lot of curve track. The study and development of a tilting system and a tilting bogie which have a different mechanism with high speed train will play a important role for enhancement of technology for Korean railway. The study for tilting pantograph mechanism to decrease the displacement between a catenary and a center of pantograph happened when the carbody is tilted in order to maintain the ride comfort and stability m a curving track is proceeding with the development of tilting train. In this paper, we introduce the design concept for the tilting mechanism of pantograph and the role and characteristics for several devices adopted in the tilting mechanism of pantograph. Through the kinematic analysis of tilting mechanism, we will obtain and calculate the optimal tilting angular velocity and acceleration in order to keep the contact behavior of a pantograph and a catenary according to tilting of a carbody.

허리관절을 가지는 4족보행로봇의 지그재그 걸음새 계획 (Discontinuous Zigzag Gait Planning of Quadruped Walking Robot with an Articulated Spine)

  • This paper presents discontinuous zigzag gait analysis for a newly modeled quadruped walking robot with an articulated spine which connects the front and rear parts of the body. An articulated spine walking robot can move easily from side to side, which is an important feature to guarantee a larger gait stability margin than that of a conventional single rigid-body walking robot. First, we suggest a kinematic modeling of an articulated spine robot which has new parameters such as a waist-joint angle, a rotate angle of a front and rear body and describe characteristics of gait using an articulated spine. Next, we compared the difference of walking motion of newly modeled robot with that of a single rigid-body robot and analyzed the gait of an articulated spine robot using new parameters. On the basis of above result, we proposed a best walking motion with maximum stability margin. To show the effectiveness of proposed gait planning by simulation, firstly the fastest walking motion is identified based on the maximum stride, because the longer the stride, the faster the walking speed. Next, the gait stability margin variation of an articulated spine robot is compared according to the allowable waist-joint angle.

Some articulatory reflexes observed in intervocalic consonantal sequences: Evidence from Korean place assimilation

  • This paper examines kinematic characteristics of /pk/ clusters, as compared to /kk/ and /pp/ with varying vowel contexts and speech rate. The results of EMMA data from eight Seoul-Korean speakers indicate as follows. Firstly, comparing /pk/ to /pp/ sequences, lips closing movement was faster and spatially greater in the /a/-to-/a/ context while temporally longer in the /i/-to-/i/ context. It was smaller in spatial displacement and shorter in temporal duration in /pk/ sequences. Peak velocity did not vary. Secondly, comparing /pk/ with /pp/ and /kk/ controls, lip aperture was less constricted in the /a/-to-/a/ context than /i/-to-/i/, but the maximum contact between the upper and lower lips was invariant across different vocalic contexts within /pk/ sequences (/apka/=/ipki/). Categorical reduction of C1 in /pk/ sequences fell in with the low-vowel and fast-rate conditions with across-/within-speaker variability. Gradient reduction of C1 was observed in all C1C2 types, being more frequent in fast rate. Lastly, the jaw articulator was a stable indicator of rate effects. The implication of the current study is that gestural reduction occurs with categorical reduction and general spatiotemporal weakening in the assimilating contexts, while quantitative properties of gestures may be a reason for gradient reduction, not necessarily confined to place assimilation.

실시간 동적 차분 위성항법을 위한 위치영역 Hatch 필터의 성능 해석 (Analyzing Position-Domain Hatch Filter for Real-Time Kinematic Differential GNSS)

  • 본 논문에서는 실시간 동적 차분 위성항법과 관련하여 근래에 제안된 위치영역 Hatch 필터의 오차 특성을 해석하였다. 위치영역 Hatch 필터에 의하여 생성되는 잉여값 순열 (residual sequence)이 고장검출에 유용한 백색잡음 (white noise) 특성을 가짐을 보였으며, 위치영역 Hatch 필터는 기존에 알려진 위치영역 Kalman 형 필터에 비하여 전 상태 추정치 (a priori state estimate) 의 정확도 면에서 오히려 더 우수함을 해석적으로 보였다. 이와 같은 특성에 의하면 차분 위성항법의 다양한 응용분야에서 위치영역 Hatch 필터가 고장검출 및 정밀측위에 효율적으로 사용될 수 있음을 알 수 있다.

경유의 윤활특성 (Lubricating Characteristics of Diesel Fuel)

  • The reduction of sulfur content in the diesel fuel has caused the poor lubricity of diesel fuel in the distributor type injection pumps of diesel engines that use the diesel for lubrication of their moving parts. To investigate the reason for poor lubricity of low sulfur diesel fuels, the wear scar diameters by HFRR (High Frequency Reciprocating Rig) were measured on the diesel fuels from Korean markets and the results were compared with their physical and chemical properties. Also, the lubricity change and the improvement effects on lubricity additives for the ultra low sulfur diesel fuel, were made experimentally, that will be regulated to a maximum of 0.005 wt% from about 2005 were evaluated. As a result, a good correlation was found between the wear scar diameter and the polyaromatic compound which includes heterocyclic compound in the diesel fuel. It was also found that the content of polyaromatic compound including heterocyclic compound was affected by the amount of desulfurization treatment fraction. And the lubricity additives with ester base were more effective than that with acid base on the ultra low sulfur diesel fuel. Therefore, it is suggested that the factors affecting the lubricity stated above should be taken into account to improve the lubricity property of the diesel fuel in the refining process.

무릎 골관절염 환자의 보행속도에 따른 하지 관절 강성 변화 (Changes of Lower Limb Joints Stiffness with Gait Speed in Knee Osteoarthritis)

  • Spring-like leg models have been employed to explain various dynamic characteristics in human walking. However, this leg stiffness model has limitations to represent complex motion of actual human gait, especially the behaviors of each lower limb joint. The purpose of this research was to determine changes of total leg stiffness and lower limb joint stiffness with gait speed in knee osteoarthritis. Joint stiffness defined as the ratio of the joint torque change to the angular displacement change. Eight subjects with knee osteoarthritis participated to this study. The subject walked on a 12 m long and 1 m wide walkway with three sets of four different randomly ordered gait speeds, ranging from their self-selected speed to maximum speed. Kinetic and kinematic data were measured using three force plates and an optical marker system, respectively. Joint torques of lower limb joints calculated by a multi-segment inverse dynamics model. Total leg and each lower limb joint had constant stiffness during single support phase. The leg and hip joint stiffness increased with gait speed. The correlation between knee joint angles and torques had significant changed by the degree of severity of knee osteoarthritis.

Vault macro-element with equivalent trusses in global seismic analyses

  • This paper proposes a quick and simplified method to describe masonry vaults in global seismic analyses of buildings. An equivalent macro-element constituted by a set of six trusses, two for each transverse, longitudinal and diagonal direction, is introduced. The equivalent trusses, whose stiffness is calculated by fully modeled vaults of different geometry, mechanical properties and boundary conditions, simulate the vault in both global analysis and local analysis, such as kinematic or rocking approaches. A parametric study was carried out to investigate the influence of geometrical characteristics and mechanical features on the equivalent stiffness values. The method was numerically validated by performing modal and transient analysis on a three naves-church in the elastic range. Vibration modes and displacement time-histories were compared showing satisfying agreement between the complete and the simplified models. This procedure is particularly useful in engineering practice because it allows to assess, in a simplified way, the effectiveness of strengthening interventions for reducing horizontal relative displacements between vault supports.
