This study was performed to find out the detoxication effects of natural products Thuja orientalis, leaf of acorn, aloe ferox mill, pine cone, pine root, lonicerae flos on nickel toxicity. The experimental rats were divided into 3 groups such as nickel alone treatment group, natural products treatment groups before and after nickel treatments. Each group was administered with difference dose of nickel such as 6.6 mg/kg/day, 13.2 mg/kg/day, 19.8 mg/kg/day respectively, for 14 days. Natural products were administered by 400 mg per kilogram body weight rat per day. The weight change of rats, nickel concentration in organs, survival rate of rats, morphology of organs were observed in the experimental groups. The results obtained by the experiment were as follows: 1. The rats in the group treated with natural products had no effect on the weight gain. 2. The mean survival rate of rats in the nickel alone treatment group was 72.5% (6.6 mg/kg/day), 68.9% (13.2 mg/kg/day), 60.2% (19.8 mg/kg/day) respectively. 3. As for the amount of nickel accumulation in organs, it was the lowest amount treated with pine cone, pine root in that order. 4. When kidney and liver tissues were observed with as optical microscope, obvious change were visible in those tissues treated groups with Lonicerae and Aloe.
We investigated the feasibility of bioethanol production from hydrolysate of brown seaweed Sargassum sagamianum. Prior to bioethanol production using yeasts, six yeast strains were compared and the best ones in terms of the ethanol production levels were selected. Pichia stipitis ATCC 7126, Pichia stipitis ATCC 58784, and Pichia stipitis ATCC 58376 were superior to others in terms of ethanol production. These yeast strains were used for producing bioethanol by the shaking bottle culture and the fermentor culture. Out of approximately 30 g/L reducing sugar, about 3~6 g/L and 4~7 g/L bioethanol were produced in the bottle culture and the fermentor one, respectively. Furthermore, it was observed that around 12~28 g-bioethanol was produced from 1 kilogram of Sargassum sagamianum. Compared with those previously published, these data were almost three to eight times higher in value.
A field experiment was conducted to study the effects of fertilizer application rate and number of harvested leaves per plant on selected agronomic, chemical and physical characteristics of burley tobacco(Nicotiana tabacum L. cv Burley 21) in 1988, 1989 and 1990 at Chonju Experiment Station, Korea Ginseng SE Tobacco Research Institute. 175.0 or 227.5 kilogram per 10a of compound fertilizer(N-P2O5-K2O= 10-10-20) were applied as main plot, and 2 or 4 of upper leaves was topped off with 0, 2 or 4 of the lower leaves removed as sub plot. Yield, total alkaloid and total nitrogen content of cured leaves were high in the higher level of compound fertilizer plot, and increasing the level of compound fertilizer had an adverse effect on physical characteristics. Reducing the number of harvested leaves had a negative effect on yield regardless of whether the leaf number was reduced by lower topping or removing the bottom leaves, but increased the rate of higher grades leaves. Differences in total alkaloid, total nitrogen and some physical properties among number of harvested leaf per plant were smaller than expected.
The HANARO, a multi-purpose research reactor of 30 MWth, open-tank-in-pool type, has been under normal operation since its initial criticality in February, 1995. The HANARO is composed of inlet plenum, grid plate, core channel with flow tubes and chimney. The reactor core channel is located at about twelve m (12 m) depth of the reactor pool and cold by the upward flow that the coolant enters the lower inlet of the plenum, rises up through the grid plate and the core channel and exit through the outlet of chimney. A guide tube is extended from the reactor core to the top of the reactor chimney for easily un/loading a target under the reactor normal operation. But active coolant through the core can be Quickly raised up to the top of the chimney through the guide tube by jet flow. This paper is described an analytical analysis to study the flow behavior through the guide tube under reactor normal operation and unloading the target. As results, it was conformed through the analysis results that the flow rate, about fourteen kilogram per second (14 kg/s) suppressed the guide tube jet and met the design cooling flow rate in a circular flow tube, and that the fission moly target cooling flow rate met the minimum flow rate to cool the target.
In HANARO, a multi-purpose research reactor of 30 MWth, the emergency water supply system consists essentially of an emergency water storage tank located in the level of about thirteen meter (13 m) above the reactor core, a three inch ('3\%') diameter water injection pipe line including injection valves from the tank to the reactor cooling inlet pipe and a test loop to do periodic system performance test. When the water level of the reactor pool comes down to the extremely low due to a loss of reactor pool water accident the emergency water stored in the tank should be fed to the core by the gravity force and at that time the design flow rate is eleven point four kilogram per second (11.4 kg/s). But it is impossible periodically to measure the injection flow rate under the emergency condition because the normal water level should be maintained during the reactor operation. This paper describes a flow network analysis to simulate the flow rate under the emergency condition. As results, it was confirmed through the analysis results that the calculated flow rate agrees with the design requirement under the emergency condition.
The Rotterdam Rules provide that port terminal operator may avoid or limit their liability for cargo loss, damage or delay in delivery or breach of any other obligation under the Rules by invoking the provisions that may provide a defence for, or limit the liability of, the carrier. Consequently the port terminal operator who are involved in the provision of maritime services may avoid or limit their liability for cargo loss, damage or delay in delivery or breach of any other obligation under the Rules. The port terminal operator to be applied for the Himalaya clause under the Rules must show that it has the requisite link with a Contracting State. In addition, the port terminal operator performs service to the period of time between the arrival of the goods at the port of loading and their departure from the port of discharge. The port terminal operator's liability for breaches of its obligation is limited to 875 SDR per package or other shipping units, or 3 SDR per kilogram of the gross weight of the goods. In addition, compensation for delay shall be limited to an amount equivalent to two and one-half times the fright payable on the goods delayed.
This study aimed to estimate the economic value of the recreational fishing in the Jeonnam marine ranching area as a part of the total socioeconomic evaluation of the Jeonnam marine ranching program. A travel cost method was applied to the estimation of economic value of the recreational fishing in the Jeonnam marine ranching area and input variables included annual fishing trip days, average travel cost per trip, average catch amount, monthly income, marriage, age, and personal perception on the marine ranching program. In the analysis, due to its characteristic of count data, both poisson model and negative binomial model were used. Model results indicated that a negative binomial model was statistically more suitable than the poisson model as the overdispersion problem occurred in the poisson model. All signs of the estimated parameters were estimated as previous studies showed. Based on the results, the economic value per trip of the recreational fishing in the Jeonnam marine ranching area was estimated to be 145,000 won and the annual total economic value of the recreational fishing in the Jeonnam marine ranching area was analyzed to be 2,514,000 won. In addition, the change of total value by catch rate showed that the economic value could be increased by 180,900 won as the catch increased by one kilogram.
A lectin named AAL has been purified from the fruiting bodies of the edible mushroom Agrocybe aegerita. AAL consisted of two identical subunits of 15.8 kDa, its pI was about 3.8 determined by isoelectric focusing, and no carbohydrate was discerned. Being treated by pyrogultamate aminopeptidase, the blocked N-terminus of AAL was sequenced as QGVNIYNI. AAL agglutinated human and animal erythrocytes regardless of blood type or animal species. Its hemagglutinating activity was unaffected by acid or alkali treatment and demetalization or addition of divalent metals $Mg^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$. AAL was toxic to mice: its LD50 was 15.85 mg per kilogram body weight by intraperitoneal injection. In this study, two novel activities of AAL were proved. It showed inhibition activity to infection of tobacco mosaic virus on Nicotiana glutinosa. The result of IEF suggested that AAL attached to TMV particles. Mycelia differentiation promotion was the other interesting activity. AAL promoted the differentiation of fruit body primordia from the mycelia of Agrocybe aegerita and Auricularia polytricha. AAL antiserum was prepared and immunologically cross-reactived with several proteins from five other kinds of mushrooms. These results suggested that AAL probably was a representative of a large protein family, which plays important physiological roles in mushroom.
A cooperative Korea-Japan investigation for the demersal fisheries resources of the East China Sea carried out by using the training ship Oshoro Maru belong to Hok-kaido University, Japan, during 1-8 November, 1991. The research vessel sampled 15 stations with demersal trawls on the East China Sea, and 1,364 nautical miles of track line were surveyed hydroacoustically. The hydroacoustic observations were taken with a scientific echo sounder operating at two frequencies of 25 kHz and 100 kHz, and a microcomputer-based echo integrator. Fish samples were collected by demersal trawling, and temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen were measured with a CTD system. The target strength of fish school was estimated from the relationship between mean scattering strength and catches caught by demersal trawling. The results obtained can be summarized as follows: 1. The mean backscattering strength for 15 layers occupied by demersal trawls at 25 kHz ranged from -70.4 dB to -59.1 dB. Then the catch per one hour ranged from 8.2 to 587.5 kg/hour. 2. The mean backscattering strength for the entire layer between transducer and seabed in the survey area of the East China Sea at 25 kHz and 100 kHz were -68.0 dB and -73.1 dB, respectively. 3. The mean fish-school target strength per one kilogram at 25 kHz and 100 kHz were -28.3 dB/kg, and -30.4 dB/kg, respectively.
We developed a new generalized synthetic procedure, called as "heat-up process," to produce uniform-sized nanocrystals of many transition metals and oxides without a size selection process. We were able to synthesize uniform magnetite nanocrystals as much as 1 kilogram-scale from the thermolysis of Fe-oleate complex. Clever combination of different nanoscale materials will lead to the development of multifunctional nano-biomedical platforms for simultaneous targeted delivery, fast diagnosis, and efficient therapy. In this presentation, I would like to present some of our group's recent results on the designed fabrication of multifunctional nanostructured materials based on uniform-sized magnetite nanoparticles and their medical applications. Uniform ultrasmall iron oxide nanoparticles of <3 nm were synthesized by thermal decomposition of iron-oleate complex in the presence of oleyl alcohol. These ultrasmall iron oxide nanoparticles exhibited good T1 contrast effect. In in vivo T1 weighted blood pool magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), iron oxide nanoparticles showed longer circulation time than commercial gadolinium complex, enabling high resolution imaging. We used 80 nm-sized ferrimagnetic iron oxide nanocrystals for T2 MRI contrast agent for tracking transplanted pancreatic islet cells and single-cell MR imaging. We reported on the fabrication of monodisperse magnetite nanoparticles immobilized with uniform pore-sized mesoporous silica spheres for simultaneous MRI, fluorescence imaging, and drug delivery. We synthesized hollow magnetite nanocapsules and used them for both the MRI contrast agent and magnetic guided drug delivery vehicle.
