  • A theoretical and experimental study was carried out on the prediction of drop size distribution of the pressure swirl atomizer. Drop size distribution was obtained by using maximum entropy formal ism. Several constraints in the form of the definition of mean diameter were used in this formulation in order to avoid the difficulties of the estimating source terms. In this study $D_{10}$ was only introduced into the formulation as a constraint. A drop size obtained by using linear Kelvin-Helmholtz instability theory was considered as an unknown characteristic length scale. As a result, the calculated drop size was agreed well with measured mean diameter, particularly with $D_{32}$. The predicted drop size distribution was agreed welt with experimental data measured wi th Malvern 2600.

  • A theoretical and experimental study was carried out to predict the drop size distribution of the pressure swirl atomizer. Various analytical methods using the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability theory were tried to examine the wave growth on cylindrical liquid sheets. Cylinderical liquid sheets were extended to the case with the conical sheets. Perturbations due to tangential motion as well as longitudinal one were taken into account. And it was assumed that the breakup occurs when amplitude ratio exceeds exp(12), drop sizes were predicted only by theoretical approach. Drop size distribution was obtained by using maximum entropy formalism. Seven constraints in the form of the definition of mean diameter were used in this formulation in order to avoid the difficulties of estimating source terms. In this study $D_{10}$ only was introduced into the formulation as a constraint. The predicted drop size and drop size distribution agreed well with the measured data.

  • The structure and evolution of a thunderstorm outflow in two dimensions with no environmental wind are investigated using a cloud-resolving model with explicit liquid-ice phase microphysical processes (ARPS: Advanced Regional Prediction System). The turbulence structure of the outflow is explicitly resolved with a high-resolution grid size of 50m. The simulated single-cell storm and its associated Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) billows are found to have the lift stages of development maturity, and decay. The secondary pulsation and splitting of convective cells resulted from interactions between cloud dynamics and microphysics are observed. The cooled downdrafts caused by the evaporation of rain and hail in the relatively dry lower atmosphere result in thunderstorm cold-air outflow. The outflow head propagates with almost constant speed. The KH billows formed by the KH instability cause turbulence mixing from the top of the outflow and control the structure of the outflow. Ihe KH billows are initiated at the outflow head, and pow and decay as moving rearward relative to the gust front. The numerical simulation results of the ratio of the horizontal wavelength of the fastest growing perturbation to the critical shear-layer depth and the ratio of the horizontal wavelength of the billow to its maximum amplitude are matched well with the results of other studies.

  • In this study, model combustion tests were conducted to investigate the combustion instability characteristics of swirl coaxial injectors for a liquid rocket engine. To examine the effects of the combustion chamber resonant frequency and the injector mixing conditions, pressure fluctuations in the combustion chamber were measured by changing the combustion chamber length, injector recess length, and propellant mixture ratio. From the test results, the variation in the pressure fluctuations for each experimental condition was confirmed and the combustion stability was evaluated by stability mapping. It was found that the longitudinal mode and Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities occurred due to the change in the combustion chamber and recess lengths.

  • In this study, an experimental study was performed to investigate the breakup mechanism of vaporizing droplet. A well-controlled experimental apparatus was used to study breakup mechanisms of a monodisperse stream of drops injected into a transverse high temperature and velocity air stream. The experiments gave information$ about the microscopic structure of the liquid drop breakup process, drop breakup regimes, and drop trajectories in high temperature flow region. The breakup time, drop acceleration and wavelength of surface instability wave were measured from a high-magnification and double spark photography. The two instability theories, i.e., Kelvin-Helmholtz instability and Rayleigh-Taylor instability, were estimated by comparing the calculated data with the measurements. The results showed that the breakup time in high temperature flow condition is shortened because the surface tension is decreased by the increase of gas temperature.

  • A multiphase flow modeling approach equipped with a hybrid turbulence modeling method is applied to compute the gravity currents in a rectangular channel. The present multiphase solver considers the dense fluid, the less-dense ambient fluid and the air above free surface as three phases with separate flow equations for each phase. The turbulent effect is simulated by the IDDES (improved delayed detach eddy simulation), a hybrid RANS/LES, approach which resolves the turbulent flow away from the wall in the LES mode and models the near wall flow in RANS mode on moderately fine computational meshes. The numerical results show that the present model can successfully reproduce the gravity currents in terms of the propagation speed of the current heads and the emergence of large-scale Kelvin-Helmholtz type interfacial billows and their three dimensional break down into smaller turbulent structures, even on the relatively coarse mesh for wall-modeled RANS computation with low-Reynolds number turbulence model. The present solutions reveal that the modeling approach can capture the large-scale three dimensional behaviors of gravity current head accompanied by the lobe-and-cleft instability at affordable computational resources, which is comparable to the LES results obtained on much fine meshes. It demonstrates that the multiphase modeling method using the hybrid turbulence model can be a promising engineering solver for predicting the physical behaviors of gravity currents in natural environmental configurations.

  • Nitrous oxide is a global warming substance and is known as the main cause of the destruction of the ozone layer because its global warming effect is 310 times stronger than carbon dioxide, and it takes 120 years to decompose. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the characteristics of NOx emission from N2O reduction by thermal decomposition of N2O. Bunsen premixed flames were adopted as a heat source to form a high-temperature flow field, and the experimental variables were nozzle exit velocity, co-axial velocity, and N2O dilution rate. NO production rates increased with increasing N2O dilution rates, regardless of nozzle exit velocities and co-axial flow rates. For N2O, large quantities were emitted from a stable premixed flame with suppressed combustion instability (Kelvin Helmholtz instability) because the thermal decomposition time is not sufficient with the relatively short residence time of N2O near the flame surface. Thus, to improve the reduction efficiency of N2O, it is considered effective to increase the residence time of N2O by selecting the nozzle exit velocities, where K-H instability is generated and formed a flow structure of toroidal vortex near the flame surface.
