There have been some studies on the use of coal waste as a raw material for clay bricks due to the lack of naturally producing minerals. It can help resolving the problems of pollution, forest conservation and flood control by utilizing coal waste. However, high content of carbon materials usually leads to the black core in clay bricks after firing process, and diminishes the mechanical and aesthetical properties of clay brick. In this study, the effect of firing process is investigated for the removal of black core in clay bricks with carbon content. The removal kinetics of black core are also compared and investigated with the firing schedule and black core removal.
The Cretaceous granite, andesite and sedimentary rocks are widely distributed in the northern Pusan area. The present study investigates mineralogical and geochemical charateristics of residual and cultivated soils derived from these rocks. The soils of granite area contain a large amount of quartz relative to clay minerals, whereas the soils of the andesite area contain more clay minerals than quartz. Clay minerals consist mainly of kaolin minerals illite hydroxy interlayered vermiculite interstratified mica/vermiculite and chlorite. Kaolin minerals are abundant in paddy soils while illite is abundant in less weathered soils. Si and K are major elements in the soils of granite area while Fe and Al in the soils of andesite area. In all the soils Ca, Mg and Na were generally depleted in comparison to those in parent rocks. Analysis data of trace element show that the enrichment pattern in soils depends on parent rock type with high oncentration of some elements over 100 ppm: Ba and Rb in granite area Zn, Bn, and V in andesite area, and Ba and V in sedimentary rock. In granite area, Rb and Th were greatly enriched in soil than in parent rocks. However, Cr, Ni and Sr commonly decrease, whereas Pb increases in all the soils. Exchangeable cation capacity(CEC) is relatively high in the soils of andesite are including abundant clay minerals. Collective evidences prove that the mineralogical and chemical compositions of soils are strongly dependent on the parent rock type. The mineralogy and chemistry of long cultivated soils are not significantly different from those of residual soils.
The weathered two-mica granite is widely distributed in Korea and called a kind of ground rock for kaolin. The major minerla compositions are consist of this quartz, feldspar, mica and clay mineral. At present, only a small portion of this granite is used as the material for the low-grade tile industry due to the low S.K. value and the high contents of impurities such as Fe2O3 and FeO. The low S.K. value is caused by feldspars not weathered to clay minerals. The refinement of this thus has been required for the recent shortage of the resources of high-grade one. This paper concerns an optimum hydrothermal treatment condition to refine the low-grade weathered two-mica granite of which impurities are feldspar mineral and Fe2O3. FeO components in using for the main material of ceramic industry. And then, from this result, we tried to fine out the basic formation mechanism of clay mineral from feldspar etc and develope the effectual utilization method of this.
Geopolymer is a term covering a class of synthetic aluminosilicate materials with potential use in a number of areas, but mainly as a replacement for Portland cement. In this study, geopolymers with fly ash and meta kaolin were prepared using KOH as an alkali activator and water glass. The effect of water glass on the microstructures and the compressive strength of the geopolymer was investigated. As the amount of water glass increased, the dissolved inorganic binder particles in the geopolymers increased due to polymerization, resulting in a dense microstructure. The meta kaolin-based geopolymer showed a better extent of polymerization and densification than that of the fly ash-based geopolymer. XRD data also suggested that polymerization in meta kaolin-based geopolymers should be active resulting in the formation of an amorphous phase with an increasing amount of water glass. The compressive strength of the geopolymer was also dependent on the amount of water glass. The compressive strength of the geopolymers from both fly ash and meta kaolin increased with an increasing amount of water glass because water glass improved the extent of polymerization of the inorganic binder and resulted in a dense microstructure. However, the addition of water glass to the geopolymer did not seem to be effective for the improvement of compressive strength because the meta kaolin-based geopolymer mainly consisted of a clay component. For this reason, the fly ash-based geopolymer showed a higher value of compressive strength than the meta-kaolin geopolymer.
A series of high gradient superconducting magnetic separator (HGMS) for kaolin has been developed. It is used for processing kaolin to increase the brightness or whiteness whether it is for paper or ceramic applications. The HGMS system mainly consists of a solenoid magnet with a zero boil-off helium cryostat, a double reciprocating canisters system, and a PLC (Process Logic Controller) fully automatic control system based on SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system. We have successfully developed CGC-5.5/300 and CGC-5.0/500 HGMS systems in the recent years, and now three sets of them are on-site operation in different customers. This paper will present recent progress of the HGMS system, the results of some experiments on processing kaolin clay used HGMS, and the on-site operation.
Kaolin-based membranes with a pore size of 0.30-0.40 ${\mu}m$ were successfully prepared by a simple pressing route using low-cost starting materials, kaolin and sodium borate. The prepared green bodies were sintered at different temperatures ranging between 900 and $1200^{\circ}C$. The sintered membranes were characterized by X-ray diffraction, mercury porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and capillary flowmetry. It was observed that the porosity decreased with an increase in both the sintering temperature and the sodium borate content, whereas the flexural strength increased with an increase in both the sintering temperature and the sodium borate content. The air flow rate decreased with an increase in the sodium borate content. The typical porosity, flexural strength, and specific flow rate of the kaolin-based membrane sintered with 5 wt% sodium borate at $1100^{\circ}C$ were 37%, 19 MPa, and $1{\times}10^{-3}L/min/cm^2$, respectively, at a p of 30 psi.
Occurrences of many kaolin-pyrophyllite deposits in the Youngnam area is related to the Late Cretaceous volcanic rocks, which are widely distributed through southern part from Tongnae-Yangsan to Miryang-Wolsung. The mode of occurrence and genesis of the kaolin-pyrophyllite deposits related to the volcanism was studied. This area is covered by andesitic rocks, rhyolite and rhyolitic welded tuff in ascending order. Lower most andesitic part is almost fresh. The altered rocks in the rhyolitic welded tuff can be classified into the following zones: silicified, pyrophyllite-kaolin, and argillic zone from the center part of ore deposit. The clay deposits occur as irregular massive, layer and funnel type about 5~20 m in width and is accompanied by thin diaspore bed outside of ore shoot. The clays chiefly consist of kaolinite, sericite, pyrophyllite, a little amount of diaspore, alunite, dumortierite, corundum and pyrite. The process of kaolinization-pyrophyllitization has a close relation to a local acidic hydrothermal solution originated from granitic rocks. Acidic hydothermal alteration occurrs mainly in the rhyolitic welded tuff. Initial solution containing $H_2S$ and others was oxidized near the surface and formed hydrothermal sulfuric acid solution.
Clay-based membranes with submicron pore size were successfully prepared by a simple pressing process using low-cost starting materials(e.g., kaolin (K), bentonite (B), talc (T), and sodium borate). The green bodies were sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in air. The effect of clay-mineral composition on the flexural strength of clay-based membranes was investigated. The porosity of the clay-based membranes could be controlled within the range of 34 - 42% by adjusting the starting composition. The flexural strength of the low-cost membranes depended on both the porosity and the ${\alpha}$-quartz content. In turn, the porosity and ${\alpha}$-quartz content were affected by the (B+T) /(K+B+T) ratio. The plot of strength relative to this ratio, showed a maximum when the ratio was 0.4. The typical flexural strength of these clay-based membranes (with ratio 0.4) was 28 MPa at 34% porosity.
