Acid spill accidents are frequently occurring in Korea with increasing production, use, storage, and transport of acids, accompanying industrialization and economic growth. The acids introduced to the subsurface environments would eventually be neutralized by reactions with geomedia. However, the spatial and temporal extent to which the spilled acids would affect will be dependent on the characteristics of the geomedia exposed to the acids. In this work, sulfuric acid, the most used acid in Korea, was reacted with a set of model geomedia representative of the geology of Korea. The buffering capacity of the model geomedia was determined through batch-type experiments using pH changes as an indicator. X-ray diffraction was used to identify the mineral phases contributing to the acid neutralization. The results showed that sandstone had the largest acid neutralization capacity among the tested geomedia, while kaolinite had the smallest. The findings of this study would contribute to quantitatively assessing the impact of spilled acids on geomedia and hence to predicting the vulnerability of geomedia to the spilled acid.
This papers aims to focus on the city marketing as the green growth policy strategies using a case study of Gangneung City, Republic of Korea. In the case study it was verified the fields of urban growth including ecology, culture, alternative and recycled energy, green transportation system. The implications of the study were as follows: First, the city government had regenerated the coastal pine forest through removing unlicensed buildings which were squatted down in decades. Secondly, the city government has recognized the value of culture that possessed various types of cultural asserts. Thirdly, it is possible to use and produce the ocean energy with the tidal power plant, wind power plant and green deep water because Gangneung City has the ocean-oriented image and is located the coastal region. Lastly, the city government has been utilizing the LED traffic light using solar heat and is going to apply the green car like an electric car. This paper indicates the importance of the alternatives of the green growth-oriented policy through city marketing using the concept of culture and ecology. The city government will strive after an advanced triple bottom line with the ecological sustainability, cultural diversity and economic effectiveness in the near future.
This study observed and compared phenological changes in the spring for some native woody plants growing at Mt. Jumbong and Mt. Bongeui located at central districts of our country, and also inquired into the phenological difference subsequent to microclimate change by measuring its related environment factors as well. The average air temperature at a survey point of Mt. Jumbong from January to May in 2004 was $4.1^{\circ}C$ lower than that of Mt. Bongeui. As for the soil temperature in April by a survey section within Mt. Jumbong, the soil temperature on the west and northwest slopes was $1.8^{\circ}C$ and $4.4^{\circ}C$ lower than that of the south slope, respectively. It was found that the earliest tree species in a flowering period was Lindera obtusiloba among the sample woody plants and its flowering began in late March at Mt. Bongeui and in early April at Mt. Jumbong. The flowering of the same species began faster on the south slope than the west or north slope; in case of the tree species flowering in early spring, there appeared about two-week interval between the survey sites. Likewise, leafing time of the same species was two weeks earlier at Mt. Bongeui(in mid-April) than at Mt. Jumbong(in early May). Nuttonson's Index and Year Day Index for the flowering and leafing time of the same species showed similar value between the survey sites. It is analyzed that the transition in phenological phases between the sites is mainly caused by temperatures; further, it is implied that the climate changes and rise in temperatures could expedite the changes in phenological phases more than ever.
The tropical wet evergreen, tropical semi evergreen and moist deciduous forest types are projected to be impacted by climate change. In the Western Ghats region, a biodiversity hotspot, evergreen forests including semi evergreen account for 30% of the forest area and according to climate change impact model projections, nearly a third of these forest types are likely to undergo vegetation type change. Similarly, tropical moist deciduous forests which account for about 28% of the forest area are likely to experience change in about 20% of the area. Thus climate change could adversely impact forest biodiversity and product flow to the forest dependent households and communities in Uttara Kannada district of the Western Ghats. This study analyses the distribution of non-timber forest product yielding tree species through a network of twelve 1-ha permanent plots established in the district. Further, the extent of dependence of communities on forests is ascertained through questionnaire surveys. On an average 21% and 28% of the tree species in evergreen and deciduous forest types, respectively are, non-timber forest product yielding tree species, indicating potential high levels of supply of products to communities. Community dependence on non-timber forest products is significant, and it contributes to Rs. 1199 and Rs. 3561/household in the evergreen and deciduous zones, respectively. Given that the bulk of the forest grids in Uttara Kannada district are projected to undergo change, bulk of the species which provide multiple forest products are projected to experience die back and even mortality. Incorporation of climate change projections and impacts in forest planning and management is necessary to enable forest ecosystems to enhance resilience.
This study was designed to analyze the economic efficiency that is needed to develop and make practical application of a mobile carbonization apparatus, which are able to make wood charcoals and pyroligneous liquid at the logging field with debris. B/C ratio was employed to make an economic analysis, and sensitivity analysis with respect to change in price and interest rates also was made. Cylindrical type is the proper type for the mobile carbonization apparatus, when important factors such as handling capacity, a carbonization time, quality of products and assembling ability were considered. It weighs 400 kg, and a three-step fold-up equipment. The size of 2 (diameter) by 2.4 m (height) carbonization equipment required 1,500 kg wood debris per batch. A forty-eight to fifty-two carbonization time produced 300 kg of wood charcoal and $45{\ell}$ of pyroligneous liquid. The average life span of the apparatus was 5 years. If the private enterprise operated 100 batch, 80 batch, and 70 batch with one apparatus, the B/C ratio of them was greater than 1, indicating that the production is economically feasible. The period to achieve a break-even point required to be 4 years in case of 100 and 80 batches to 5 years in case of 70 batch. But the private enterprises should operate at least two apparatus for the profits. Also, if the production was to be profitable, the prices of wood charcoals and pyroligneous liquid should be at least 750 won per kg and 700 won per liter.

Ashwagandha is an important ancient medicinal crops, being affected with many diseases, among which leaf blight caused by Alternaria alternata has become the constraint resulting in huge yield losses. Continuous usage of chemical methods leads to environment, soil and water pollution. Whereas biological control of diseases is long lasting, inexpensive, eco-friendly and harmless to target organisms. In this context, it is aimed to evaluate five Trichoderma strains viz. Trichoderma virens IMI-392430, T. pseudokoningii IMI-392431, T. harzianum IMI-392432, T. harzianum IMI-392433 and T. harzianum IMI-392434 as bio-control efficacy against A. alternata and growth promoting effect in Ashwagandha. All the Trichoderma strains had varied antagonistic effects against the pathogen. In dual culture technique, the strain T. harzianum IMI-392433 showed maximum percentage inhibition of mycelial growth (54.89%) followed by T. harzianum IMI-392432 (53.83%), T. harzianum IMI-392434 (48.94%) and T. virens IMI-392430, (43.62%) against the pathogen, while the least inhibition percentage was observed with the T. pseudokoningii IMI-392431 (36.60%). The culture filtrate of the Trichoderma strain, T. harzianum IMI-392433 recorded highest inhibition on the mycelial growth (39.05%) and spore germination (80.77%) of pathogen and the lowest was recorded in T. pseudokoningii IMI-392431 (20.45 and 50%). Moreover, seeds treated with spore suspension of the strain T. harzianum IMI-392433 reduced the percentages of disease severity index significantly. The strain T. harzianum IMI-392433 also significantly increased seed germination %, seedling vigor and growth of Ashwagandha. The correlation matrix showed that root yield per plant of Ashwagandha had significant and positive correlation with plant height (r=0.726⁎⁎), number of leaf (r=0.514⁎⁎), number of primary branch (r=0.820⁎⁎), number of secondary branch (r=0.829⁎⁎), fresh plant weight (r=0.887⁎⁎), plant dry weight (r=0.613⁎⁎), root length (r=0.824⁎⁎), root diameter (r=0.786⁎⁎), root dry weight (r=0.739⁎⁎) and fresh root weight (r=0.731⁎⁎). The significant and negative correlation (r=-0.336⁎⁎) was observed with the root yield and percentages of disease severity index. The study recognized that the T. harzianum IMI-392433 strain performed well in inhibiting the mycelial growth and reduced the percentages of disease severity index of pathogen as well as increased the plant growth in Ashwagandha.

We investigate the spatial distribution of highly conductive layer using the one-dimensional inversions of the new magnetotelluric (MT) measurements obtained at the mid-mountain (400 ~ 900 m in elevation) western area of Jeju Island and the previous MT data over Jeju Island, Korea. The conductive layer indicates the sedimentary layer comprised of Seoguipo Fomation and U Formation. There is a definite positive correlation between the top of conductive layer and the earth surface in elevation. On the contrary, the bottom of conductive layer has a negative correlation with the surface elevation. In other words, the conductive layer has a shape of convex lens, which is thickest in the central part. The basement beneath the conductive layer could be concave in the central part of Jeju Island. A kriging considering the correlation between the layer boundary and the surface elevation provides a reliable geoelectric structure model of Jeju Island. However, further studies, i.e. three-dimensional modeling and interpretation integrated with other geophysical or logging data, are required to reveal the possible presence of three-dimensional conductive body near the subsurface vent of Mt. Halla and the causes of the bias in the depths of layer estimated from MT and core log data.
This study considers the case when a district with a high development possibility is set up as a regulation region. Initial assumption is that there would be regulation resistance in and around the regulation region. Pyeongchang is taken as a study areas, performing necessary analysis of environment regulation and regulation resistance based upon spatial analysis with the use of GIS. The research proceeding steps are as follows. After examining Pyeongchang present environment regulation state, environment regulation map is constructed, and classification of Pyeongchang's relatively development possibility level map is made. Using this regulation map and development possibility level map, relative regulation resistance level is measured. The results that the rates of Pyeongchang environment regulation region in its present state was higher than Namhan river basin's regulation region rates. Also, overlapping a high development possibility level region with an environment regulation region, the analysis results give reasons to expect high level of regulation resistance in Doam-myeon and Jinbu-myeon in small town units. The analysis of Pyeongchang new buildings locations with regard to environment regulation showed intensive distribution in the regulation region with high development possibility level and adjacent areas (about 66% of new buildings are distributed within 500m range from regulation region). Such results show that the local administration and existing environment regulation policy, not capable of offering direct benefit to the population, are having immanent problems in environment sustainable development and connected with it environment harm causation.

To assess the food habits, the nutrient intakes and diet quality of high school students living in Chuncheon area. a dietary survey using a questionnaire and 24hr recall method was conducted with 318 subjects. $30.8\%$ of the subjects often skipped breakfast and $28.0\%$ had snacks over once per day. Mean daily energy intake was $1740\pm712kca1\;with\;61.1\%$ of energy supplied by carbohydrate, $16.0\%$ by protein and $23.1\%$ by fat. As well as insufficiencies in calcium and iron intakes, the bioavailability of calcium and iron consumed is considered to be low because most of them came from plant origins. For calcium, iron and riboflavin, the proportions of subjects with intake levels less than $75\%$ of RDA were all over $68\%$. The mean adequacy ratio(MAR), an index of overall dietary quality was 0.79 for males and 0.78 for females. The indexes of nutritional quality(INQ) were over 1 for most nutrients except 3 nutrients: 0.67 of calcium, 0.82 of iron, 0.90 of riboflavin. Nutrient intake levels less than $75\%$ of RDA may be appropriate as a criteria for insufficiency of nutrient intakes. Based on these results, it is evident that some of high school students in Chuncheon area did not consume enough nutrients, especially calcium, iron and riboflavin.

This study aims to explore cognitive biases relating the core competences of science and instructional strategy in reducing the level of cognitive biases. The literature review method was used to explore cognitive biases and science education experts discussed the relevance of cognitive biases to science education. Twenty nine cognitive biases were categorized into five groups (limiting rational causal inference, limiting diverse information search, limiting self-regulated learning, limiting self-directed decision making, and category-limited thinking). The cognitive biases in limiting rational causal inference group are teleological thinking, availability heuristic, illusory correlation, and clustering illusion. The cognitive biases in limiting diverse information search group are selective perception, experimenter bias, confirmation bias, mere thought effect, attentional bias, belief bias, pragmatic fallacy, functional fixedness, and framing effect. The cognitive biases in limiting self-regulated learning group are overconfidence bias, better-than-average bias, planning fallacy, fundamental attribution error, Dunning-Kruger effect, hindsight bias, and blind-spot bias. The cognitive biases in limiting self-directed decision-making group are acquiescence effect, bandwagon effect, group-think, appeal to authority bias, and information bias. Lastly, the cognitive biases in category-limited thinking group are psychological essentialism, stereotyping, anthropomorphism, and outgroup homogeneity bias. The instructional strategy to reduce the level of cognitive biases is disused based on the psychological characters of cognitive biases reviewed in this study and related science education methods.
