  • The Human Robot Interface (HRI) based on 3D depth sensor on the docent robot is developed and the localization algorithm based on extended Kalman Filter (EKFLA) are proposed through the capstone design by graduate students in this paper. In addition to this, the performance of the proposed EKFLA is also analyzed. The developed HRI system consists of the route generation and localization algorithm, the user behavior pattern awareness algorithm, the map data generation and building algorithm, the obstacle detection and avoidance algorithm on the robot control modules that control the entire behaviors of the robot. It is confirmed that the improvement ratio of the localization error in EKFLA on the scenarios 1-3 is increased compared with the localization algorithm based on Kalman Filter (KFLA) as 21.96%, 25.81% and 15.03%, respectively.

  • In this paper, the dependence of the Kalman filter-based emitter location algorithm on the initial estimate is investigated. Given all the LOB data, the initial estimate of the emitter location is obtained from the linear LSE algorithm with the former LOB data. Using the initial estimate, the Kalman filter algorithm is applied with the remaining LOB data to update the initial estimate. It is shown that as the number of data used in the calculation of the initial estimate increases, the accuracy of the final estimate is improved and the total computational complexity of obtaining the initial estimate and the final estimate increases. In addition, the dependence of the performance of the Kalman filter algorithm on the predefined constant is illustrated.

  • This paper describes a mapping and localization based on wave algorithm[11] and Kalman filter for effective SLAM. Each robot in a multi robot system has its own task such as building a map for its local position. By combining their data into a shared map, the robot scans actively seek to verify their relative locations. For simultaneous localization the algorithm which is well known as Kalman Filter (KF) is used. For modelling the robot position we wish to know three parameters (x, y coordinates and its orientation) which can be combined into a vector called a state variable vector. The Kalman Filter is a smart way to integrate measurement data into an estimate by recognizing that measurements are noisy and that sometimes they should ignored or have only a small effect on the state estimate. In addition to an estimate of the state variable vector, the algorithm provides an estimate of the state variable vector uncertainty i.e. how confident the estimate is, given the value for the amount of error in it.

  • This paper proposes a vision-based indoor localization method for autonomous vehicles. A single upward-facing digital camera was mounted on an autonomous vehicle and used as a vision sensor to identify artificial landmarks and any natural corner features. An interest point detector was used to find the natural features. Using an optical flow detection algorithm, information related to the direction and vehicle translation was defined. This information was used to track the vehicle movements. Random noise related to uneven light disrupted the calculation of the vehicle translation. Thus, to estimate the vehicle translation, a Kalman filter was used to calculate the vehicle position. These algorithms were tested on a vehicle in a real environment. The image processing method could recognize the landmarks precisely, while the Kalman filter algorithm could estimate the vehicle's position accurately. The experimental results confirmed that the proposed approaches can be implemented in practical situations.

  • Underwater localization is a crucial capability for reliable operation of various types of underwater vehicles including submarines and underwater robots. However, sea water is almost impermeable to high-frequency electromagnetic waves, and thus absolute position fixes from Global Positioning System (GPS) are not available in the water. The use of acoustic telemetry systems such as Long Baseline (LBL) is a practical option for underwater localization. However, this telemetry network system needs to be pre-deployed and its availability cannot always be assumed. This study focuses on demonstrating the validity of terrain-based localization techniques in a GPS-denied underwater environment. Since terrain-based localization leads to a nonlinear estimation problem, nonlinear filtering methods are required to be employed. The extended Kalman filter (EKF) which is a widely used nonlinear filtering algorithm often shows limited performance under large initial uncertainty. The feasibility of using a particle filter is investigated, which can improve the performance and reliability of the terrain-based localization.

  • In this paper, we propose a vision-based simultaneous localization and map-building (SLAM) algorithm. SLAM problem asks the location of mobile robot in the unknown environments. Therefore, this problem is one of the most important processes of mobile robots in the outdoor operation. To solve this problem, Extended Kalman filter (EKF) is widely used. However, this filter requires computational power (${\sim}O(N)$, N is the dimension of state vector). To reduce the computational complexity, we applied compressed extended Kalman filter (CEKF) to stereo image sequence. Moreover, because the mobile robots operate in the outdoor environments, we should estimate full d.o.f.s of mobile robot. To evaluate proposed SLAM algorithm, we performed the outdoor experiments. The experiment was performed by using new wheeled type mobile robot, Robhaz-6W. The performance results of CEKF SLAM are presented.

  • In this paper, we present localization and autonomous navigation method using GPU(Graphics Processing Unit)-based SIFT(Scale-Invariant Feature Transform) algorithm and virtual force method for mobile robots. To do this, at first, we propose the localization method to recognize the landmark using the GPU-based SIFT algorithm and to update the position using extended Kalman filter. And then, we propose the A-star algorithm for path planning and the virtual force method for autonomous navigation of the mobile robot. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method through some experiments using the mobile robot with OPRoS(Open Platform for Robotic Services).

  • High-precision autonomous localization technique is essential for future Mars rovers. This paper addresses an innovative integrated localization algorithm using a multiple information fusion approach. Firstly, the output of IMU is employed to construct the two-dimensional (2-D) dynamics equation of Mars rover. Secondly, radio beacon measurement and terrain image matching are considered as external measurements and included into the navigation filter to correct the inertial basis and drift. Then, extended Kalman filtering (EKF) algorithm is designed to estimate the position state of Mars rovers and suppress the measurement noise. Finally, the localization algorithm proposed in this paper is validated by computer simulation with different parameter sets.

  • CSS (Chirp Spread Spectrum) specified in IEEE 802.15.4a can be used for ranging applications. In this paper, we apply the CSS to estimate the coordinates of a mobile robot. Four anchor nodes are installed at known positions and a tag node is attached to the target mobile robot. By CSS ranging, we measure the distances between each anchor and the tag node. Based on the measured distances, the coordinates of the mobile robot can be calculated by the method of trilateration. However the calculated coordinates are not accurate because of the errors of the measured distances. Therefore we propose an algorithm for reducing the effect of the errors. The proposed algorithm is executed with the extended Kalman filter. Through localization experiments, we show the performance of the proposed algorithm and the accuracy of the estimated position.
