A review on the Plan for the Further Reinforcement of the NOx Emission Limit for Marine Diesel Engine (선박에서 배출되는 NOx의 배출량 규제에 대한 대응 방안 고찰)

  • Domestic marine diesel engine makers reduce the NOx emission mostly by applying low NOx fuel nozzle and injection timing retard. However, it is necessary to develop high efficient technology (EGR, DWI and SCR, etc.) to reduce NOx emission in order to prepare for the further reinforcement of the NOx emission limit. Also, in the near future, IMO will restrict additively THC, PM and CO with NOx. Therefore, domestic engine makers have to prepare for it and the relevant government ministries should give a sufficient support to these technology research and establish or amend the relevant law, which should include the excursion riverboat.

  • In this paper, we present an implementation and it's real-sea test of an underwater acoustic data communication system, which allows the system to reduce complexity and increase robustness in time variant underwater environments. For easy adaptation to complicated and time-varying environments of the ocean, all-digital transmitter and receiver systems were implemented. For frame synchronization the CAZAC sequence was used, and QPSK modulation/ demodulation method with carrier frequency of 25kHz and a bandwidth of 5kHz were applied to generate 10kbps transmission rate including overhead. To improve transmission quality, we used several techniques and algorithms such as adaptive beamforming, adaptive equalizer, and convolution coding/Viterbi decoding. for the verification of the system performance, measurement of BER has been done in a very shallow water with depth of 8m at JangMok, Geoje. During the experiment, image data were successfully transmitted up to about 7.4km.

Surface Air Temperature Variations around the Antarctic Peninsula: Comparison of the West and East Sides of the Peninsula

  • This study investigated the spatial characteristics of warming trends and the dipole-like pattern of temperature field in the Antarctic Peninsula using surface air temperature (SAT) of 10 stations in the vicinity of the Antarctic Peninsula. SAT data for the 1962-2001 period at 6 stations (Rothera, Faraday/Vernadsky, Bellingshausen, Orcadas, Esperanza, Halley) revealed in general the larger warming trends in autumn and winter except for Halley. The largest warming was shown for August in the west side of the Peninsula (more than $0.9^{\circ}C/decade$). On the other hand, the recent 14-year SAT data showed the strong warming trends at 9 stations except for Halley in the earlier period (April-June) than August for the 1962-2001 period. The largest warming appeared in May at Esperanza and Butler Island. SAT of the two sides showed significant positive correlations over most of the period except for the mid- and the late 1970s, in which significant negative correlations were found. In the correlation analysis between SAT and sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the NINO 3.4 region, strong negative correlation was found in the west side of the Peninsula. Details of the correlation analysis exhibited that the negative correlation was significantly strong from the early 1980s to the mid-1990s. However, it was difficult to find significant correlations of ENSO with SAT in the east side of the Peninsula. So, in this study it failed to find out clearly the out-of-phase relationship of SAT across the Antarctic Peninsula.

The Ergonomic Layout of Ship's Bridge Panels using the Mathematical Programming (수리모형을 이용한 선박 항해기기 패널의 인간공학적 배치)

  • When designing a ship, ergonomic considerations are crucial when minimizing a navigator's fatigue due to the burden of work, and to appropriately operate the navigational equipment for each given situation by helping the operator to understand the surroundings as well as the physical functions of the ship. However, insufficient consideration of ergonomic elements in the actual design of ship Bridges is lowering the performance of safe navigation and allows for the possibility of operation or readout errors. Consequently, these errors lead to an increase in maritime accidents. Therefore, this study conducted a usability evaluation on the importance of and the usage frequency of navigational equipment, their influence on actual navigation, and the possibility of error upon operation or readout between training ship officers, to derive an optimized layout that includes the consideration of ergonomic factors for on-Bridge navigational equipment, which are currently arranged differently according to their type or size. The optimized layout of on-Bridge navigational equipment was carried out based on the evaluation results, using the Lingo program. Through the process of optimization, revised layouts of on-Bridge navigational equipments(control and display device) were suggested, considering emergency situations(ship collision, stranding, fire and explosion, sinking, etc.) during navigation.

  • It is known that under storm waves, beach will respond by eroding material from the beach Ace and the formation of longshore bar(s) in the vicinity of breaking point. This breakpoint bar is believed to have the effect of slowing down beach erosion by dissipating incoming wave energy and retarding offshore sediment transport. Recently, artificial bin are being proposed as beach protective measures based on this reasoning. (omitted)

Development of a Broadband Self-recording Hydrophone

  • A broadband self-recording hydrophone was developed to conveniently assemble a hydrophone array for use in receiving underwater sound waves. A trigger device with an electromagnetic induction coupler was also developed to control the hydrophone's operation. Main configurations and specifications of the self-recording hydrophone are introduced in this paper. We present experiment results conducted in a water tank to examine the operating behavior of the hydrophone. Some advantages are discussed when the self-recording hydrophones are used to make up a hydrophone array.

Toxicity of Persistent Organic Pollutants, PAHs and TBT, in Zooplankton and Influence on Their Viability (동물플랑크톤에 대한 지속성 유기오염물질 PAHs와 TBT의 독성 및 생존능력에 미치는 영향)

  • We conducted three experiments to estimate the toxicity of POPs (persistent organic pollutants) on two copepod species (Acartia erythraea and A. omorii) and Artemia sp.; (1) 48 h-LC$_{50}$ of A. omorii with the five PAHs [polycyelic aromatic hydrocarbons anthracene, benzo〔a〕pyrene, fluoranthene, phenanthrene, pyrene〕 which were often detected in the Gwangyang Bay, (2) toxicity of benzo〔a〕pyrene and TBT on Artemia in different temperatures (1$0^{\circ}C$, 15$^{\circ}C$, 2$0^{\circ}C$), (3) effects of benzo〔a〕pyrene and TBT on egg Production rate, hatching rate and fecal Pellet Production of two copepod species (A. erythraea and A. omorii) fed on Heterocapsa triquetra (dinoflagellate) exposed in benzo〔a〕pyrene. Toxic chemicals which were most effective to A. omorii were flueranthene (48 h-LC$_{50}$ 19.20 $\mu\textrm{g}$ L$^{-1}$ ) and benzo〔a〕pyrene (48 h-LC$_{50}$ 29.89 $\mu\textrm{g}$ L$^{-1}$ ). The toxi- city of chemicals to Artemia increased when temperature increased. The toxicity of TBT was about 100 times higher than that of benzo〔a〕pyrene at 15$^{\circ}C$. Food materials (Heterocapsa triquetra) exposed in benzo〔a〕pyrene, affected negatively the rate of egg production, hatching rate and the fecal pellet production of the copepods at the high concentration. It is suggested that an increase in the concentration of benzo〔a〕pyrene might offset the production of copepods in marine ecosystems. This study suggests that copepods may be used as n indicator for early warning of the risk of POPs in marine ecosystems.

A Study on the Design of Ergonomic Bridge Conning Display (인간공학적 Bridge Conning Display 설계에 관한 연구)

  • According to the development of technology of the navigational equipments, many bridge equipments have been improved, however, marine accidents by human error have not been reduced. Therefore, a matter of primary concern is focused on whether bridge equipments of ships are ergonomically arranged to reduce errors due to human factors. As part of a design of IBS(Integrated Bridge System) standard, rules of the conning display to save time and additional movements to obtain important informations of a ship should be established as soon as possible. In the present study, ergonomic design factors for the conning display are studied through the survey of related works, heuristic evaluations, sketch method tests as well as questionnaires. Using these factors, new conning display was designed and the ergonomic indices were evaluated by comparing tests of the existing conning displays. It is found that the designed conning display obtained high ergonomic index showed better performance, therefore, the ergonomic index studied in the present paper can be used as a useful design standard in the conning display design procedures.

Strategies for Development of Seafloor Polymetallic Sulphides in Consideration of International Progress (해저열수광상 개발동향과 우리나라의 대응방안)

  • Polymetallic sulphides means hydrothermally formed deposits of sulphide minerals which contain concentrations of metals including, inter alia, copper, lead, zinc, gold and silver. Nautilus is the first company to commercially explore the seafloor polymetallic sulphide deposits. The Company holds exploration licences and exploration applications for more than 370,000 $km^2$ in the jurisdictional seas of Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands and New Zealand along the western Pacific Ocean's Rim of Fire. Neptune Minerals is also a leading explorer and developer in this field, with exploration licences awarded totalling more than 270,000 $km^2$ in the territorial seas or EEZ of New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and the Federated States of Micronesia. These two companies now carry out the most active investment activities for seafloor polymetallic sulphide deposits with a goal of commercial production by 2010. China and Japan carry out exploration activities for the seafloor polymetallic sulphide deposits to secure supplies of strategic metals. China carries out national R&D projects relating to deep sea mineral resources in the world ocean through China Ocean Mineral Resources R&D Association(COMRA). And Japan investigates her own EEZ for exploration of the seafloor polymetallic sulphide deposits. In consideration of aforementioned international activities of coastal nations as well as private companies for exploring the sulphide deposits, Korea shall prepare strategic plans : First, consolidation of the authorities concerned and legislative support; second, determination of main entity of the project; third, securing government's decisive investment of sufficient budget; and lastly, establishment of the mid, long-term plan for development of seafloor polymetallic sulphides deposits.

Novel Fiber Optic Microbend Sensor for the Measurement of Cable's Curvature (케이블의 곡률 측정을 위한 새로운 형태의 광섬유 마이크로벤드 센서 개발)

  • In this paper the measurement method of cable's curvature using fiber optic microbend effect and its experimental results are presented. The novel structure of fiber optic microbender, which can generate microbend effect on the optical fiber in the case of both directional bending of cable, was designed. Through the experiment using suggested sensing system, the increasing trend of attenuated optical power was found out under the range from $0.1\;cm^{-1}$ to $0.4\;cm^{-1}$ of curvature. To the multi and distributed measurement, using OTDR, the scattered optical pulses at the bending points are measured and compared with the result which was measured by optical power meter.
