  • This paper describes the orbital dynamics operation results for the launch and early operations phase (LEOP) of KOMPSAT-3, which was successfully launched on May 18, 2012. At the initial phase, operational orbit determination was carried out using ground tracking data and GPS navigation solution. And, both in-plane and out-of plane maneuvers were executed in order to change the orbit from the injection orbit to the mission orbit. In addition, the accuracy of precise orbit determination was indirectly evaluated by overlapping method using GPS raw data of KOMPSAT-3 and international GNSS service data from worldwide-distributed ground stations. Currently, KOMPSAT-3 is operated in pre-defined mission orbit, and its various kinds of orbit data are generated and distributed to support the normal mission operations.

  • The main field component of the Earth's magnetic field was modeled from the tri-axial magnetometer onboard KOrean MultiPurpose SATellite-II (KOMPSAT-II) for the purpose of satellite attitude control. The model computed by the KOMPSAT-II magnetometer measurement data is compared with the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) model of a degree of up to 13 in spherical harmonic coefficients. The previous study with KOMPSAT-I (Kim et al. 2004) indicated a good correlation of power spectrum of spherical harmonic coefficients with respect to the degree up to 5. This study, however, showed an agreement of the degree up to 8-9 of the coefficient power spectrum and a discrepancy between degrees 10 and 13. We have concluded that relevant data selection process, removal of the external field from the data in the high latitude region, an accuracy of the magnetometer all play an important role in finding a coherence with the IGRF model. This study will be extended to the secular variation model of geomagnetism if longer-period data become available.

  • The KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite(KOMPSAT)-2 has a capability to provide a cross-track stereo imagery using two different orbits for generating various spatial information. However, in order to fully realize the potential of the KOMPSAT-2 stereo imagery in terms of mapping, various tests are necessary. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the possibility of mapping using the KOMPSAT-2 stereo imagery. For this, digital plotting was conducted based on the stereoscopic images. Also the Digital Elevation Model(DEM) and an ortho-image were generated using digital plotting results. An accuracy of digital plotting, DEM, and ortho-image were evaluated by comparing with the existing data. Consequently, we found that horizontal and vertical error of the modeling results based on the Rational Polynomial Coefficient(RPC) was less than 1.5 meters compared with the Global Positioning System(GPS) survey results. The maximum difference of vertical direction between the plotted results in this study and the existing digital map on the scale of 1/5,000 was more than 5 meters according as the topographical characteristics. Although there were some irregular parallax on the images, we realized that it was possible to interpret and plot at least seventy percent of the layer which was required the digital map on the scale of 1/5,000. Also an accuracy of DEM, which was generated based on the digital plotting, was compared with the existing LiDAR DEM. We found that the ortho-images, which were generated using the extracted DEM in this study, sufficiently satisfied with the requirement of the geometric accuracy for an ortho-image map on the scale of 1/5,000.

  • Kompsat-3 is an optical high-resolution earth observation satellite launched in May 2012. The AEISS sensor of the Korean satellite provides 0.7m panchromatic and 2.8m multi-spectral images with 16.8km swath width from the sun-synchronous near-circular orbit of 685km altitude. Kompsat-3 is more advanced than Kompsat-2 and the improvements include better agility such as in-track stereo acquisition capability. This study investigated the characteristic of the epipolar curves of in-track Kompsat-3 stereo images. To this end we used the RPCs(Rational Polynomial Coefficients) to derive the epipolar curves over the entire image area and found out that the third order polynomial equation is required to model the curves. In addition, we could observe two different groups of curve patterns due to the dual CCDs of AEISS sensor. From the experiment we concluded that the third order polynomial-based RPCs update is required to minimize the sample direction image distortion. Finally we carried out the experiment on the epipolar resampling and the result showed the third order polynomial image transformation produced less than 0.7 pixels level of y-parallax.

  • This paper describes the orbit accuracy of KOMPSAT-5, which has been in normal operations since the launch on Aug. 22, 2013. The analysis on the various GPS related data and the different methodologies for orbit estimation are carried out and compared with each other. The accuracy of precise orbit is confirmed to be 12.8cm($1{\sigma}$) on average using data from the in-flight dual frequency GPS receiver, GPS precise ephemeris, and IGS stations. In addition, the orbit estimation using single frequency GPS receiver provides the orbit solution around 2m level. And, the accuracy of orbit processing is 5m using on-board navigation solution, which has about 10m accuracy.

  • Kompsat-3 is an optical high-resolution earth observation satellite launched in May 2012. In addition to its 0.7m spatial resolution, Kompsat-3 is capable of in-track stereo acquisition enabling quality Digital Elevation Model(DEM) generation. Typical DEM generation procedure requires accurate control points well-distributed over the entire image region. But we often face difficult situations especially when the area of interests is oversea or inaccessible area. One solution to this is to use existing geospatial data even though they only cover a part of the image. This paper aimed to assess accuracy of DEM from Kompsat-3 with different scenarios including no control point, Rational Polynomial Coefficients(RPC) relative adjustment, and RPC adjustment with control points. Experiments were carried out for Kompsat-3 stereo data in USA. We used Digital Orthophoto Quadrangle(DOQ) and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission(SRTM) as control points sources. The generated DEMs are compared to a LiDAR DEM for accuracy assessment. The test results showed that the relative RPC adjustment significantly improved DEM accuracy without any control point. And comparable DEM could be derived from single control point from DOQ and SRTM, showing 7 meters of mean elevation error.

  • Collision probability is the most common method to measure the risk of space debris, it is widely used that two dimensional linear collision probability using the closest approach distance. This paper represents the characteristics of object that approach KOMPSAT 2, 3, 5 that have operated or will be operated by Korea. And more precise method than two dimensional linear collision probability, we analyzed the properties of three dimensional nonlinear collision probability using STK/Nonlinear Collision Probability Tool. Through this, efficiency of three dimensional nonlinear collision probability for KOMPSAT series satellites was investigated. The result represents that three dimensional nonlinear collision probability showed the precise outcome at a relative velocity of less than 350m/s. Also, KOMPSAT series satellites appeared to few low relative velocity approaches and showed low efficiency for the three dimensional nonlinear collision probability.

  • KOMPSAT-5(KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite-5) has a benefit of continuously conducting its mission in all weather and even night by loading SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) payload, which is different from optical sensor of KOMPSAT-2 satellite. During IOT(In-Orbit Test) periods, SAR image calibration should be conducted through ground target of which location and RCS is pre-determined. Differently from the conventional corner reflector, active transponder has a capability to change its internal transfer gain and delay, which allows active transponder to be shown in a pixel of SAR image with very high radiance and virtual location. In this paper, the development of active transponder is presented from design to I&T(Integration and Test).
