In panel studies in which the same respondents are interviewed repeatedly over the long term, panel attrition may cause the problems in the reliability of the result and the representativeness of the sample in panel study. In this article, we explore the risk factors of sample attrition in the first 11 waves of the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS) data covering the years 1998-2008, for which the survival analysis techniques such as life-table method and Cox proportional hazard model based on the time to the attrition of each respondent as the survival time of the respondent are applied.
Interest about the effect of military service is increasing because of the renewal of military service incentive system in Korea. In the background, men has been experienced which suffer monetary and non-monetary damages through the compulsory military service in Korea. However there are few studies that analyze the labor market effect of military service. This study takes advantage of male worker's data of 10th KLIPS(Korea Labor & Income Panel Survey) in 2007 and analyze the wage effect of military service. According to empirical result using Mincerian earnings function, the positive effect of military service appeared. These result shows men who finished military duty have an monetary advantage in Korean labor market unlike general perceptions on military service.
Using 3 years of panel data on nearly 3,507 households, the Korea Labor Income Panel Survey(KLIPS) data, the authors measure the determinants of poverty and unemployment, and the extents to which poverty influenced unemployment. The probit analysis of unemployment shows that unemployment probability is lower, when male, lower age and is higher, high-school and over junior college, work duration is over 3 years. The probit analysis of poverty shows that poverty probability is lower, when male, higher education level, longer career. specially unemployment and social insurance is determinants of increasing poverty. Bivariate probit model of unemployment and poverty also provides similar findings to those probit analysis and shows an evidence of the influence of unemployment on poverty along with the positive role of social welfare policy such that social welfare receipt reduces the impact of unemployment on poverty.
This study presents an empirical analysis of job search behaviors by using the 3rd Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS) data. The first finding of the study is that specific job search methods, respectively categorized as the indirect and the formal pattern, show the contrasting consequences of causality, as given job searchers'personal attributes and other social factors. Secondly, this analysis confirms that job searchers' education level is the most important factor that influences their behavioral patterns in a consistent manner. Moreover, it is evident in this exploratory study that job searchers' social network (particularly whether to have close ties with relatives of high social rank) is a statistically important factor to influence the extent of job search methods in use, while their fathers' education level also significantly affects the choice of job search patterns.
This study examines how the rate of transition between employment and non-employment changes with the business cycle using monthly panel data constructed from 2000-2013 Korea Labor and Income Panel Study(KLIPS). In particular, we investigate whether the transition rates are different across demographic groups when the labor market is depressed. We find that, as the labor market weakens, the transition rate into non-employment significantly increases. The rates of transition into non-employment are substantially higher for female, older and less educated groups than those for male, prime-aged and more educated groups.
This paper examines the changes in relative wage of top 10 college graduates to the other college graduates among the age group of 26-28 years using Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS). From 1999 to 2008, the wage differential between top 10 college graduates and the other college graduates increased in South Korea. This wage differential seems to persist along with their age. Within industry wage differential among college graduates also rose but in the late 2000s it became smaller than the wage differential within firm size and industry. Increase in elite college wage premium has led to recent changes in college wage premium.
In this paper, we estimate the wage premium of English skills in the Korean labor market using Korean Labor and Income Panel Study(KLIPS) data. In a simple OLS model, we find that people with some English skills in terms of self evaluation or job requirement earn 30% more than those who do not have English skills. But in a small sample of relatively young people, higher English lest scores do not raise earnings. When we add SAT scores in the wage equation, there is no wage premium of English skills, and in the IV estimation, we find no "English premium". These results consistently imply that while there is a large wage premium of English skills in the Korean labor market, it reflects unobservable ability for the most part. Meanwhile some of the regression results favor human capital theory over screening theory as an explanation of the nature of the wage premium of English skills.
This paper compares the earnings effect of inter-industry technology differences between the self-employed and wage earners. It is assumed that primary skills utilized by the self-employed and paid workers differ in nature, and thus the earnings effect of technology differences and its skill-biasness also differ for each type of workers. For the empirical analysis. Heckman's two-stage method and quantile regressions are fitted to Korean panel data. The earnings effect of technology differences turns skill- biased for wage earners (job-specific skills), but prevails for all self-employed workers (entrepreneurial skills) regardless of their schooling level. This sectoral difference holds for each different quantile of earnings distribution.
This paper examines how the levy-grant system for on-the-job training affects individual workers' training level and the subsequent wage growth. Some notable results include: (i) the workers at the firms facing high net benefits (i.e., grant minus levy) receive more firm training indeed, and (ii) training provision raises post-training earnings substantially. All these results are found to be robust to changes in firm size and estimation method.
This paper empirically examines the reemployment pattern (full-time versus part-time reemployment) using pooling 6 year data of Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS, 1998-2003). A discrete data analysis (multi-nominal logistic regression) is adopted to identify variables predicting reemployment pattern. Among those who lose full-time or part-time job in previous year, women and older people are found to have both longer unemployment durations and lower probabilities of full-time reemployment (versus either each of part-time reemployment or unemployment) than men and younger people. Therefore, the future labor market policy should be more associated with the one for reducing these gender and age differences in worker characteristics.
