The main purpose of this study is to investigate the failure surface in a soil mass by a excavation of the model ground. The failure mechanism of an earth structure is usually determined from field failure observations or from laboratory model tests at failure. To study the failure surface for the excavated slope, laboratory model tests were performed by changing the angle of the excavated slope and the ground condition. Results of the laboratory model tests were compared with those obtained with theoretical solutions using limit equilibrium analysis method. The results of model tests show that, there is a failure to create a straight line in the low angle of excavated surface and a create a circle as the angle increases. As the angle of excavated surface is increasing, the angle of the failure surface increases too. In the angle of the failure surface, the submerged ground is less than the dry ground at $3.2^{\circ}$.
This study examined the effects of surface roughness in the mixed lubrication regime of smooth and rough surfaces for roller bearings. The average flow model was adopted for interaction between the flow rheology of the lubricant and the surface roughness. The average Reynolds equation and related flow factor that describes the coupled effects of surface roughness and flow rheology, the viscosity-pressure and density-pressure equations, the elastic deformation equation, and the force balance equation were solved simultaneously. The results showed that the effects of surface roughness on the film thickness and pressure distribution should be considered, especially in elastohydrodynamic lubrication contact problems.

In this study we augmented a virtual object to an image of a flexible surface such as a paper, which is acquired from a web camera. To get more presence feeling, we consider realistic illumination on augmenting. To get the geometric relation between the camera and the flexible surface, we use markers that are printed on the surface. Using marker information in prior, three dimensional coordinates of the surface can be calculated. After the marker is removed from the input image, we attach a two dimensional texture and shadow to the flexible surface by considering realistic illumination.

In the present study, a towed underwater particle image velocimetry (PIV) system was validated in uniform flow and used to investigate the free-surface effects on the turbulent wake of a simple surface-piercing body. The selected test model was a cylindrical geometry formed by extruding the Wigley hull's waterplane shape in the vertical direction. Due to the constraints of the two-dimensional (2D) PIV system used for the present study, the velocity field measurements were done separately for the vertical and horizontal planes. Using the measured data at several different locations, it was possible to identify the free-surface effects on the turbulent wake in terms of the mean velocity components and turbulence quantities. In order to provide an accuracy level of the data, uncertainty assessment was done following the International Towing Tank Conference standard procedure.

We have studied the tilt angle generation on the homeotropic polyimide (PI) surface using a low intensity ion beam source as a function of incident angle. An excellent LC alignment of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) on the PI surface with ion beam exposure for all incident angles was observed. The tilt angle of NLC on the homeotropic PI surface for all incident angles was from 90 to 88 degree was observed. Also the tilt angle of NLC on the homeotropic PI surface with ion beam exposure of 400 eV had a tendency to increase as ion beam energy incident angle become more instance from 45 degree. Finally, a good LC alignment thermal stability on the homeotropic PI surface with ion beam exposure can be achieved.
The surface of $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$ cathode particle was modified by lanthanum based oxide to improve electrochemical property and thermal stability. The XRD pattern of surface layer was indexed with that of $La_4NiLiO_8$. The discharge capacity of modified electrode was higher than that of pristine sample, specially at fast charge-discharge rate and high cut-off voltage. In the DSC profile of the charged sample, the generation of heat by exothermic reaction was decreased by surface modification. Such enhancement may by attributed to the presence of stable lanthanum based oxide, which effectively suppressd the reaction between electrode and electrolyte on the surface of $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$ electrode.
We describe a efficient surface reconstruction method that reconstructs a 3D manifold polygonal mesh approximately passing through a set of 3D oriented points. Our algorithm includes 3D convex hull, octree data structure, signed distance function (SDF), and marching cubes. The 3D convex hull provides us with a fast computation of SDF, octree structure allows us to compute a minimal distance for SDF, and marching cubes lead to iso-surface generation with SDF. Our approach gives us flexibility in the choice of the resolution of the reconstructed surface, and it also enables to use on low-level PCs with minimal peak memory usage. Experimenting with publicly available scan data shows that we can reconstruct a polygonal mesh from point cloud of sizes varying from 10,000 ~ 1,000,000 in about 1~60 seconds.
This work aims to study effects of the crack and the surface energy on the free longitudinal vibration of axially functionally graded nanorods. The surface energy parameters considered are the surface stress, the surface density, and the surface Lamé constants. The cracked nanorod is modelled by dividing it into two parts connected by a linear spring in which its stiffness is related to the crack severity. The surface and bulk material properties are considered to vary in the length direction according to the power law distribution. Hamilton's principle is implemented to derive the governing equation of motion and boundary conditions. Considering the surface stress causes that the derived governing equation of motion becomes non-homogeneous while this was not the case in works that only the surface density and the surface Lamé constants were considered. To extract the frequencies of nanorod, firstly the non-homogeneous governing equation is converted to a homogeneous one using an appropriate change of variable, and then for clamped-clamped and clamped-free boundary conditions the governing equation is solved using the harmonic differential quadrature method. Since the present work considers effects of all the surface energy parameters, it can be claimed that this is a comprehensive work in this regard.
This study focuses on 'texture' as one of the most important fashion and textile design elements; in addition, it proposes various applications of it. Surface texture is indispensable in fashion and textile design that also factors heavily into innovative creations. Along with technological advances in the fashion industry, surface texture has derived many new and attractive features that provide more opportunities for designers to show various design concepts. Rather than the surface quality of fabrics, surface texture in fashion design creates its identity through a manipulation of materials- an application that tends to be primarily for visual effects without being restricted to decorative purposes. The status and significance of surface texture in various creative fields is explored and the evolution of surface texture is traced by analyzing a number of fashion design cases with representative surface textures. The latest feature of surface texture in fashion and textile design is identified to establish a new classification of surface texture with five groups and technical suggestions. This study provides a theoretical basis for this field of study and a new framework that can be employed in the development of surface textures that use innovative techniques as well as the future application of newly-developed textures.
Statement of problem: Implant screw loosening has been remained problem in restorative practices. Surface treatment of screw plays a role of preventing screw from loosening in implant screw mechanism. Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate surface characteristics of TiN and ZrN film ion plated screw with titanium and gold alloy screw and to evaluate wear resistance, surface roughness, and film adhesion on screw surface using various instruments. Material and methods : GoldTite screws and titanium screws provided by 3i (Implant Innovation, USA) and TorqTite screws or titanium screws by Steri-Oss (Nobel Biocare, USA) and gold screws and titanium screws by AVANA (Osstem Implant, korea) were selected. Ion plating which is much superior to other surface modification techniques was carried out for gold screws and titanium screws using Ti and Zr coating materials with nitrogen gas. Ion nitrided surface of each abutment screw was observed with field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM, micro-diamond scratch tester, vickers hardness tester, and surface roughness tester. Results : 1) The surface of gold screw and GoldTite is more smooth than ones of other kinds of non coated screw. 2) The ZrN and TiN coated surface is the more smooth than ones of other kinds of screw. 3) The hardness of TiN and ZrN coated surface showed higher than that of non coated surface. 4) The TiN coated titanium screw and ZrN coated gold screw have a good wear resistance and adhesion on the surface. 5) The surface of ZrN coated screw showed low surface roughness compared with the surface of TiN coated screw. Conclusion : It is considered that the TiN and ZrN coated screw which would prevent a screw from loosening can be applicable to implant system and confirmed that TiN and ZrN film act as lubricant on surface of screw due to decrease of friction for recycled tightening and loosening.
