  • The problem of separation between the teaching and the practice of architectural design in Korean universities has activated this study. Comparison between two professor-architects in Italy through their various activities has been made during the period of 1991-1992 in the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia. The names of the two professor-architects are Aldo Rossi and Franco Mancuso. Their teaching activities in their architectural design class with their assistants, their background and formation of architectural theory, and two realized (and prized) works of them have been compared. The results show that there is a great difference (or oppositions) in their world-view and their attitudes towards architecture, the one as an empiricist, the other as a rationalist. But the most impressive observation must be the fact that all of them were coherent in their teaching, theory and practice, although this raises another qustion about the 'rationality' in architecture.

  • This paper examines the ASCE first generation benchmark problem for a seismically excited cable-stayed bridge, and proposes a new semi-active control strategy focusing on inclusion of effects of control- structure interaction. In this study, magnetorheological (MR) fluid dampers, which belong to the class of controllable fluid dampers, are proposed as the supplemental damping devices, and a clipped-optimal control algorithm, shown to perform well in previous studies involving MR fluid dampers, is employed. The dynamic model for MR fluid dampers is considered as a modified Bouc-Wen model, which is obtained from data based on experimental results for large-scale dampers. Numerical results show that the performance of the proposed semi-active control strategy using MR fluid dampers is quite effective.

  • An intensity survey on the 13 December 1996 Yeogweol earthquake has mode for 262 locations throughout southern part of Korean peninsula, then we investigated attenuation properties in the south Korean region as well as intensities distribution. In this study, intensities are estimated to be from II to possibly VIII. The iso-seismal intensity map we obtained shows general pattern of intensity distribution in the south korean region quite clearly despite the inherent uncertainties included in the process of intensity estimation. In case of intensity larger than VI, considerable damages such as fracturing walls are frequently reported. One of the significant feature of this intensity map is, considering its magnitude 4.5 reported by KMA, the felt area is unusually large covering most of the Korean Peninsular except Cheju island. This result indicates either the magnitude is under estimated or the focal depth is much deeper than expected. Assuming indicates either the magnitude is under estimated or the focal depth is much deeper than expected. Assuming shallow earthquake whose focal depth is by iso-seismal contour lines for intensity IV to VII, respectively. To resolve this ambiguity, more reliable estimation of focal depth and magnitude by using telesesmic instrumental records should be made in the future.

  • A general scheme is developed which determines the Lagrangian motions of water particles by the Eulerian velocity at their mean positions by use of Taylor's theorem. Utilizing the Stokes finite-amplitude wave theory, the mass transport velocity which includes the effects of higher-order wave components is determined. The fifth-order theory predicts the mass transport velocity less than that given by the existing second-order theory over the whole depth. Limited experimental data for changes in wave celerity in closed wave flumes are compared with the theoretical predictions.

  • Chemical application is one of the most important field operation in rice production . Rolling of a boom due to local unevenness and softness in fields causes a local under/over-application of spray. This study was conducted to develop a control system for balancing a boom. A boom mounting mechanism was modfied and a control algorithm was developed in the study. The results for testing the performance of the control system showed that the system could balance the boom in flat and inclined fields. This research can contribute to improve spraying uniformity in applying agricultural chemicals with a boom sprayers.

  • First of all, we express our deepest sympathies for the passing of Professor Su-Moon Park. In the present paper, an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), which Professor Su-Moon Park also used frequently for the investigation of electroconducting polymer, is introduced as a recent evaluation tool for a commercially available lithium-ion battery (LIB). The paper surveys how to design equivalent circuits while explaining physical and chemical phenomena in the LIB and how to get more accurate impedance spectra with varying the measuring temperatures. Additionally, a square current EIS (SC-EIS) technique, which we have suggested, is introduced for the larger LIB system as a promising technique for the future.
