  • Purpose: Weapon systems have the long life cycle unlike the consumer product. Thus, the reliability of weapon system is improved during the life cycle through the steady technical change. In this paper, we deal with the method of evaluating the reliability of weapon system with the field failure data. Methods: Especially, we present how to gather the field failure data and evaluate the reliability through the case of K-series weapon system. To evaluate reliability, the reliability growth model is used and the result is discussed. Results: It is steadily improved the reliability of K-series weapon system deployed from 2000 to 2004. The frequency of the failures that affect the mission is largely reduced and MTBMF(mean time between mission failure) is also improved. Conclusion: We can guess the trend of the reliability of weapon system with the field data through this study. Furthermore, it can be used to improve the reliability and make maintenance policy.

  • The Systems Engineering method is increasingly recognized as a central in the Acquisition of Weapon Systems in South Korea. Because of these trends, issues concerned with improving weapon system design are increasingly raised. This paper presents a development of Operational Mode Summary/Mission Profile (OMS/MP) in terms of Weapon Systems Acquisition for application to Systems Engineering method. For a systematic approach, a precise concept of OMS/MP is derived by analyzing the concept of conventional OMS/MP. This paper reviews the results of a series of previously reported examples aiming to develop the OMS/MP of a weapon system. Based on this, the limitations of the conventional OSM/MP applications are investigated. And these limitations can be resolved by the Fundamentals of Systems Engineering. Finally, the OMS/MP framework based on the Fundamentals of Systems Engineering has been proposed and is successfully implemented for the Harbor Underwater Surveillance System.

  • This paper proposes to select Measure of Performance(MOP) for object attainment in the counterfire operation and deduce the reasonable combination of blue force's hitting resources satisfying MOP's optimal value and regression equation for the object achievement time. Also, in the study-methodological perspective, a series of procedures for drawing the regression equation from the real world is presented. Firstly the model was made by simplifying the weapon-system information of red force and blue force, then the time for object attainment was derived from its simulation. Simulating the model for the counterfire operation was divided into three phases-detection, decision and hitting. The probability method by applying the random numbers were used for detection, fixed constant numbers for decision and hitting. The simulation was repeatedly performed to get the minimum time for the object attainment against the fixed enemy, and it was estimated as the optimal value of simulation. From this result, the optimum combination of blue force's weapon system against the red force and finally, the regression equation were obtained by using the response surface analyzing method in MINITAB. Thereafter this equation was completely verified by using 'the 2-sample t-test.' As a result, the regression equation is suitable.

  • Since the modern weapon system is composed of a complex system, it is quite difficult to derive the priority of performance improvement factors. In addition, research on the method for prioritizing quantitative performance improvement factors considering the opinions of stakeholders is insufficient. In this study, in order to quantitatively derive the priorities of performance improvement factors for K1 tanks and K2 tanks, a survey was conducted with experts with experience in tank development, and the preface data was analyzed using AHP, scoring method, and TOPSIS methods. As a result, priorities were quantitatively derived. The results of this study are expected to be used as decision-making indicators for stakeholders in the future weapon system development and performance improvement stage.

  • Arc fault detector based on multilevel DWT with analysis of high-frequency noise components over 100 kHz is proposed in this study to improve the performance in detecting serial arcs and distinguishing them from inverter noise in PV systems. PV inverters generally operate at a frequency range of 20-50 kHz for switching operation and maximum power tracking control, and the effect of these frequency components on the signal for arc detection leads to negative arc detection. High-speed ADC and multilevel DWT are used in this study to analyze frequency components above 100 kHz. Such high frequency components are less influenced by inverter noise and utilized to detect as well as separate DC series arc from inverter noise. Arc detectors identify the input current of PV inverters using a Rogowski coil. The sensed signal is filtered, amplified, and used in 800kSPS ADC and DWT analysis and arc occurrence determination in DSP. An arc detection simulation facility in UL1699B was constructed and AFD tests the proposed detector were conducted to verify the performance of arc detection and performance of distinction of the negative arc. The satisfactory performance of the arc detector meets the standard of arc detection and extinguishing time of UL1699B with an arc detection time of approximately 0.11 seconds.

  • The PBA of ship weapon system should be installed and operated under harsh environmental conditions and so it should be highly reliable to endure the mission profiles during its entire lifetime. In the case of PBA failure during operation, rapid maintenance is highly likely to be difficult due to problems such as supply of parts, which can have a devastating effect on the mission. In order to validate the reliability of PBA, a series of tests are performed with PBA samples, but they require time, testing facilities, samples, expenses and failure analysis if failed. The reliability of PBA is predicted on the basis of specifications such as MIL-HDBK-217F, but this specification does not take into account failure mechanisms for specific design details, environment and usage, interconnects and its characteristics that drive many failures of PBA in the field. Therefore, this study predicts the reliability of PBA using an RPA tool and proposes the RPA methodology as a validation process at the design stage. With RPA, it is now possible to achieve design validation including inherent failure mechanism, identification of weakest link, alternative design options, and test plan development.
