  • This paper reports a series of component tests on a lightweight floor system and a method to predict the natural frequency of the floor using a frame analysis program. Full-scale floor tests are also briefly described. DuraGal steel Rectangular Hollow Sections (in-line galvanised RHS) are used as joists, bearers and piers in DuraGal lightweight floor systems. A structural grade particleboard is used as decking. Connection stiffness between different components (bearer, joist, pier and floor decking) was determined. A 40% composite action was achieved between the RHS joist and the particleboard. Both 2D and 3D models were developed to study the effect of connection stiffness on predicting the natural frequency of DuraGal lightweight floor systems. It has been found that the degree of shear connection between the bearer and the joist has a significant influence on the floor natural frequency. The predicted natural frequencies are compared with measured values from full scale floor testing.

  • This paper deals with a single-phase impedance-source dynamic voltage restorer (Impedance-DVR) to mitigate voltage sag/swell for the critical loads. The proposed system is composed of passive filter and impedance-source topology inverter. As an ESS(Energy Storage System) of the proposed system is employed the Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC). To calculate and control the compensation voltage, single-phase $^id-^iq$ theory in dq rotating reference frame and PI controller are used. Simulation results under voltage sag and swell are presented to show the performance.

  • This paper deals with the dynamic behaviour of cold-formed steel hollow frames with different connection stiffnesses. An analytical model of a semi-rigid frame was developed to study the influence of connection stiffnesses on the fundamental frequency and dynamic response of the frames. The flexibilities of the connections are modeled by rotational springs. Neglect of semi-rigidity leads to an artificial stiffening of frames resulting in shorter fundamental period, which in turn results in a significant error in the evaluation of dynamic loads. In the seismic design of structures, of all the principal modes, the fundamental mode of translational vibration is the most critical. Hence, experiments were conducted to study the influence of the connection stiffnesses on the fundamental mode of translational vibration of the steel hollow frames. From the experimental study it was found that the fundamental frequency of the frames lie in the semi-rigid region. From the theoretical investigation it was found that the flexibly connected frames subjected to lateral loads exhibit larger deflection as compared to rigidly connected frames.

  • Temporal dual gamma drive technology employing the 120Hz refresh rate was developed to enhance the off-axis viewing quality in patterned vertical alignment mode. The color shift ${\Delta}u'v'$ from on-axis to off-axis (60 deg.) for pale orange color, (R,G,B) = (196,124,96), was below 0.01, and the power exponent of gamma curve for off-axis viewing angle (60 deg.) was about 1.8, when the gamma curve for on-axis was set with power exponent of 2.4. The off-axis image distortion index was below 0.180 in contrast to the normal case ${\sim}0.23$. To elevate the response speed of liquid crystal in the intra-frame, the voltage below threshold voltage of liquid crystals was used.

  • Nanoenergetic materials were synthesized and the thermite reaction between the CuO nanowires and the deposited nano-Al by Joule heating was studied. CuO nanowires were grown by thermal annealing on a glass substrate. To produce nanoenergetic materials, nano-Al was deposited on the top surface of CuO nanowires. The temperature of the first exothermic reaction peak occurred at approximately $600^{\circ}C$. The released heat energy calculated from the first exothermic reaction peak in differential scanning calorimetry, was approximately 1,178 J/g. The combustion of the nanoenergetic materials resulted in a bright flash of light with an adiabatic frame temperature potentially greater than $2,000^{\circ}C$. This thermite reaction might be utilized to achieve a highly reliable selective area crystallization of amorphous silicon films.

  • The method and results of the software implementation of a echo processor for medical ultrasound imaging using a GPU (NVIDIA G80) is presented. The echo signal processing functions are modified in a SIMD manner suitable for the GPU's massively parallel processing architecture so that the GPU's 128 ALUs are utilized nearly 100%. The preliminary result for a frame of image composed of 128 scan lines, each having 10240 16-bit samples, shows that the echo processor can be inplemented at a high rate of 30 frames per second when implemented in C, which is close to the optimized assembly codes running on the TI's TMS320C6416 DSP.

  • An inverted-F antenna for wireless local area network (WLAN) is presented. The proposed design is based on the typical dual-band planar inverted-F antennas (PIFA), which have two tunable resonant modes. The low-profile antenna is built by stamping and designed to be mounted on the metal frame of the laptop LCD panel. The obtained antenna can perform in 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands and be adopted for other wireless applications. All the measurements are performed in the actual test fixture.

  • This paper considers a wideband cognitive radio network (WCRN) which can simultaneously sense multiple narrowband channels and thus aggregate the detected available channels for transmission and studies the ergodic throughput of the WCRN that operated under: the wideband sensing-based spectrum sharing (WSSS) scheme and the wideband opportunistic spectrum access (WOSA) scheme. In our analysis, besides the average interference power constraint at PU, the average transmit power constraint of SU is also considered for the two schemes and a novel cognitive radio sensing frame that allows data transmission and spectrum sensing at the same time is utilized, and then the maximization throughput problem is solved by developing a gradient projection method. Finally, numerical simulations are presented to verify the performance of the two proposed schemes.

  • In this paper, we propose a scalable high-quality speech reconstruction method for distributed speech recognition (DSR). It is difficult to reconstruct speech of high quality with MFCCs at the DSR server. Depending on the bit-rate available by the DSR system, we can send additional information associated with speech coding to the DSR sorrel, where the bit-rate is variable from 4.8 kbit/s to 11.4 kbit/s. The experimental results show that the speech quality reproduced by the proposed method when the bit-rate is 11.4 kbit/s is comparable with that of ITU-T G.729 under both ideal channel and frame error channel conditions while the performance of DSR is maintained to that of wireline speech recognition.

  • This paper summarizes available literature on the optimization of reinforced concrete (RC) beams. The objective of optimization (e.g. minimum cost or weight), the design variables and the constraints considered by different studies vary widely and therefore, different optimization methods have been employed to provide the optimal design of RC beams, whether as isolated structural components or as part of a structural frame. The review of literature suggests that nonlinear deterministic approaches can be efficiently employed to provide optimal design of RC beams, given the small number of variables. This paper also presents spreadsheet implementation of cost optimization of RC beams in the familiar MS Excel environment to illustrate the efficiency of the exhaustive enumeration method for such small discrete search spaces and to promote its use by engineers and researchers. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis is performed on the contribution of various design parameters to the variability of the overall cost of RC beams.
