  • In this paper, we investigate hidden node problem to effectively utilize TV band devices(TVBDs) in the TV white space(TVWS), and also to protect digital television(DTV) service in Korea. Firstly, we classify the radio propagation environment into an urban area, a basin area, and a coastal area based on geographical characteristics. Thereafter, we measure and analyze local shape based hidden node attenuation at eight segmented positions in each geographic area. Because commercial buildings as well as residential and commercial buildings in Korea are located in closer proximity to each other than in other countries, hidden node margin should be more than 38 dB in order to safely protect DTV service in Korea.

  • This paper presents the intra capacitance modeling based on the winding method and section bobbin for CM choke capable of EMI attenuation of broad bands from lower to higher frequency bands and high frequency type common-mode choke capable of EMI attenuation of high frequency band used in the EMI Block of LED-TV SMPS. The case of high frequency type CM choke can be explained by the parasitic capacitance of three types of CM choke. The winding method of section bobbin type is smaller than the others. The first resonant frequency of the proposed CM choke tends to increase as the parasitic capacitance becomes small and its impedance characteristics improved performance as the first resonant frequency increases. The CM chokes of the proposed section bobbin type shows that in the future, the method may have practical use in LED/LCD-TV SMPS and in several applications, such as LED lighting, adapters, and so on.

  • This paper has been proposed a structure composed of FIRs and IIR filters as digital interpolation filter to integrate the off-chip analog low-pass filter of audio DAC. The passband ripple (>$0.41{\times}fs$), passband attenuation(>at$0.41{\times}fs$) and stopband attenuation(<$0.59{\times}fs$) of the ${\Delta}{\Sigma}$ modulator output using the proposed digital interpolation filter had ${\pm}0.001[dB]$, -0.0025[dB] and -75[dB], respectively. Also the inband group delay was 30.07/fs[s] and the error of group delay was 0.1672%. Also, the attenuation of stopband has been increased -20[dB] approximately at 65[kHz], out-of-band. Therefore the RC products of analog low-pass filter on chip have been decreased compared with the conventional digital interpolation filter structure.

  • Microwave Otters are essential device in modem wireless systems. A compact dimension BPF(Band-pass Filter) for IEEE 802.11a WLAN service is realized using LTCC multi-layer process. To extrude 2-stage band-pass equivalent circuit, band-pass and J-inverter transform applied to Chebyshev low-pass prototype filter. Because parallel L-C resonator is complicate and hard to control the inductor characteristics in high frequency, the shorted $\lambda/4$ stripline is selected for the resonator structure. The passive element is located in the different layers connected by conventional via structure and isolated by inner GND. The dimension of fabricated stacked band-pass filter which is composed of six layers, is $2.51\times2.27\times1.02\;mm^3$. The measured filter characteristics show the insertion loss of -2.25 dB, half-power bandwidth of 220 MHz, attenuation at 5.7 GHz of -32.25 dB and group delay of 0.9 ns at 5.25 GHz.

  • The radar observation system in Japan is operated by two governmental groups: Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) of Japan. The JMA radar observation network is comprised of 20 C-band radars (with a wavelength of 5.6 cm), which cover most of the Japan Islands and observe rainfall intensity and distribution. And the MLIT's radar observation system is composed of 26 C-band radars throughout Japan. The observed radar echo from each radar unit is first modified, and then sent to the National Bureau of Synthesis Process within the MLIT. Through several steps for homogenizing observation accuracy, including distance and elevation correction, synthesized rainfall intensity maps for the entire nation of Japan are generated every 5 minutes. The MLIT has recently launched a new radar observation network system designed for flash flood observation and forecasting in small river basins within urban areas. It is called the X-band multi parameter radar network, and is distinguished by its dual polarimetric wave pulses of short length (3cm). Attenuation problems resulting from the short wave length of radar echo are strengthened by polarimetric wavelengths and very dense radar networks. Currently, the network is established within four areas. Each area is observed using 3-4 X-band radars with very fine resolution in spatial (250 m) and temporal (1 minute intervals). This study provides a series of utilization procedures for the new input data into a real-time forecasting system. First of all, the accuracy of the X-band radar observation was determined by comparing its results with the rainfall intensities as observed by ground gauge stations. It was also compared with conventional C-band radar observation. The rainfall information from the new radar network was then provided to a distributed hydrologic model to simulate river discharges. The simulated river discharges were evaluated again using the observed river discharge to estimate the applicability of the new observation network in the context of operations regarding flood forecasting. It was able to determine that the newly equipped X-band polarimetric radar network shows somewhat improved observation accuracy compared to conventional C-band radar observation. However, it has a tendency to underestimate the rainfall, and the accuracy is not always superior to that of the C-band radar. The accuracy evaluation of the X-band radar observation in this study was conducted using only limited rainfall events, and more cases should be examined for developing a broader understanding of the general behavior of the X-band radar and for improving observation accuracy.

  • Due to the difficulty in measuring very low out-of-band cutoff depths of solar blind UV filters, we propose a cutoff depth adjustable measurement system (CDAM) to test deep cutoff filters with a large dynamic range. The CDAM utilizing the substitution method is elaborately composed of several parts, including narrow-band LED light sources, standard reflective neutral attenuators with known attenuation coefficients, and a photomultiplier (PMT). This paper also presents an attenuator combination method ensuring that the PMT works within its linear response range. In addition, numerical simulation testifies to the method, and experiment shows that the CDAM system can achieve an extension of dynamic range from 0-6 OD to 0-10 OD, which is sufficient for the measurement of out-of-band cutoff depths of solar blind UV filters. Above all, the CDAM system, being easily implemented, of wide dynamic range, and highly precise, could be widely used in the measurement of filter cutoff depth.

  • A two-axis gimbal-type X-band antenna mounted on an observation satellite can efficiently transmit high-capacity image data to a ground station regardless of both the satellite position and the orbital motion. However, this X-band antenna induces unnecessary micro-jitter which can degrade the image quality of the high-resolution observation satellite. Therefore, to achieve the high-resolution image quality from the observation satellite, micro-jitters have been required to be isolated. In this study, to resolve aforementioned drawback, we proposed blade gear using a shape memory alloy (SMA) applied to azimuth stage of X-band antenna. To investigate the rotational basic characteristics of the proposed SMA blade gear, we performed rotational static loading test. Futhermore, to evaluate the cycle to failure of the gear, accelerated life test was conducted. The temperature test was conducted to confirm rotational basic characteristics at various temperature conditions. To verify the isolation performance for micro-jitter, we performed micro-jitter measurement test.

  • A Multi-Layer Ceramic (MLC) chip type Band-Pass Filter (BPF) using BiNb$\_$0.975/Sb$\_$0.025/ $O_4$ LTCC (Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramics) and MLC processing is presented. The MLC chip BPF has the benefits of low cost and small size. The BPF consists of coupled stripline resonators and coupling capacitors. The BPF is designed to have an attenuation pole at below the passband for a receiver band of IMT-2000 handset. The computer-aided design technology is applied for analysis of the BPF frequency characteristics. The attenuation pole depends on the coupling between resonators and the coupling capacitance. An equivalent circuit and structure of MLC chip BPF are proposed. The frequency characteristics of the manufactured BPF is well acceptable for IMT-2000 application.

  • This study provides a comparative analysis of cloud top heights observed by a Ka-band cloud radar and the Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) at Boseong National Center for Intensive Observation of severe weather (NCIO) from May 25, 2013 (1600 UTC) to May 27. The rainfall duration is defined as the period of rainfall from start to finish, and the no rainfall duration is defined as the period other than the rainfall duration. As a result of the comparative analysis, the cloud top heights observed by the cloud radar have been estimated to be lower than that observed by the COMS for the rainfall duration due to the signal attenuation caused by raindrops. The stronger rainfall intensity gets, the more the difference grows. On the other hand, the cloud top heights observed by the cloud radar have been relatively similar to that observed by the COMS for the no rainfall duration. In this case, the cloud radar can effectively detect cloud top heights within the range of its observation. The COMS indicates the cloud top heights lower than the actual ones due to the upper thin clouds under the influence of ground surface temperature. As a result, the cloud radar can be useful in detecting cloud top heights when there are no precipitation events. The COMS data can be used to correct the cloud top heights when the radar gets beyond the valid range of observation or there are precipitation events.
