  • Electrodeposition of thermoelectric materials, including binary and ternary compounds, have been attracting attentions, because its many advantages including cost-effectiveness, rapid deposition rate, and ease of control their microstructure and crystallinity by adjusting electrodeposition parameters. In this work, $Bi_xTe_y$ films were potentiostatically electrodeposited using Au/Ni(80/20 nm)/Si substrate as the working electrode in solutions consisting of 10mM $TeO_2$ and 1M $HNO_3$ where $Bi(NO_3)_3$ was varied from 2.5 to 10 mM. Prior to electrodeposition potentiostatically, linear sweep voltammograms (LSV) were acquired with a standard three-electrode cell. The $Bi_xTe_y$ films deposited using the electrolyte containing low Bi ions shows p-type conductivity, which might be attributed by the large incorporation of Te phases. Near stoichiometric $Bi_2Te_3$ thin films were obtained from electrolytes containing 5mM $Bi(NO_3)_3$. This film shows the maximum Seebeck coefficient of $-100.3{\pm}12.7{\mu}V/K$. As the increase of Bi ions in electrolytes decreases the Seebeck coefficient and resistivity. The maximum power factor of $336.2{\mu}W/m{\cdot}K^2$ was obtained from the film deposited using the solution of 7.5mM $Bi(NO_3)_3$.

  • The early stages of bismuth (Bi) electrodeposition on glass carbon electrode from alkaline electrolyte were studied by cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The CV analysis showed that the electrodeposition of Bi was determined to be quasireversible process with diffusion controlled. The current transients for Bi electrodeposition were analyzed according to the Scharifker-Hills model and the Heerman-Tarallo model. It can be concluded that the nucleation and growth mechanism was carried out under a 3D instantaneous nucleation, which was confirmed by SEM analysis. The kinetic growth parameters were obtained through a nonlinear fitting. In addition, the Bi film obtaining at -0.86 V for 1 hour was of compact and uniform surface with good smoothness, small roughness and a very high purity. The Bi film were indexed to rhombohedral crystal structure with preferred orientation of (0 1 2) planes to growth.

  • We describe here the cloning and characterization of a cDNA encoding the glutathione S-transferase (GST) from the bumblebee Bombus ignitus. The Delta-class B. ignitus GST (BiGSTD) gene spans 1668 bp and consists of four introns and five exons that encode 216 amino acid residues with a calculated molecular weight of approximately 24561 Da and a pI of 8.03. The N-terminal domain of BiGSTD has a conserved Ser residue, as well as conserved Lys, Pro, Glu, Ser and Tyr residues that are involved in the GSH-binding site of GST. The BiGSTD showed 60% protein sequence identity to the Bombyx mori GSTT1, 58% to Musca domestica GST, 57% to Drosophila melanogaster GST, and 55% to Anopheles gambiae GST1. BiGSTD was close to the insect-specific Delta class of GSTs in a phylogenetic tree. Northern blot analysis showed that BiGSTD is highly expressed in the fat body and midgut, and less so in the muscles of B. ignitus worker bees.

  • The kinetic constants and the reaction mechanism of the K228G mutant horse liver alcohol dehyrogenase isoenzyme E (HLADH-E) were compared to the wild-type enzyme. All the Km and Ki constants of the mutant enzyme for NAD+, ethanol, acetaldehyde and NADH were larger than those of the wild-type enzyme. The dissociation constants for the NADH and $NAD^{+}$ (Kiq and Kia) were greatly increased by 130-and 460-fold, respectively. The product inhibition patterns suggested that the reaction mechanism of the mutant enzyme was changed to Random Bi Bi. These results could attribute to the increase in the dissociation rate of coenzyme with the substitution at Lys-228 residue.

  • A muscle-specific lipase gene of the bumblebee Bombus ignitus was cloned and characterized. This gene, which we named Bi-Lipase, consists of seven exons encoding 317 amino acid residues. Bi-Lipase possesses all the features of lipases, including GXSXG consensus motif and Ser-Asp-His catalytic triad. Expressed as a 37-kDa polypeptide in baculovirus-infected insect Sf9 cells, recombinant Bi-Lipase showed an optimal pH of 9.0 and exhibited its highest catalytic activity at $40^{\circ}C$. Furthermore, through the addition of tunicamycin to the recombinant virus-infected Sf9 cells, recombinant Bi-Lipase was found to be N-glycosylated. Northern and western blot analyses indicated that Bi-Lipase was expressed in the wing, thorax, and leg muscles. These results show that Bi-Lipase is a muscle-specific lipase, suggesting a possible role of Bi-Lipase in the utilization of lipids for muscular activity in B. ignitus.

  • In this paper we review a bi-aspect nonparametric test for the two-sample problem under the location translation model and propose a new one to accommodate a more broad class of underlying distributions. Then we compare the performance of our proposed test with other existing ones by obtaining empirical powers through a simulation study. Then we discuss some interesting features related to the bi-aspect test with a comment on a possible expansion for the proposed test as concluding remarks.

  • With development of electrical power system, the DC distribution system has been considered as a promising technology to be used in the future smart distribution system. Among the various components comprising the DC distribution system, the bi-directional DC/DC converter is one of the most important equipment to interconnect between main power system and various renewable resources such as photovoltaic power generation, wind power generation, and electrical vehicles. In this paper, a bi-directional DC/DC converter based on three-phases interleaved method which is effective to reduce ripple of input current and output voltage is modeled using ElectroMagnetic Transient Program(EMTP), and the verification of modeled bi-directional DC/DC converter is conducted.

  • This paper introduces a microwave-assisted synthesis method to prepare hybrid $Bi_2Se_3-GR/TiO_2$ nanocomposites, which exhibit superior properties over single component materials. The as-prepared composites were characterized by XRD, UV-vis absorbance spectra, SEM,TEM, EDX, and BET analyses, revealing uniform covering of the graphene nanosheet with $Bi_2Se_3$ and $TiO_2$ nanocrystals. For visible light photocatalysis of Rh.B, a significant enhancement in the reaction rate was consequently observed with $Bi_2Se_3-GR/TiO_2$ composites. The degradation rate($k_{app}$) obtained for sonophotocatalysis was $6.8{\times}10^{-3}min^{-1}$, roughly 2.2 times better than that of VL photocatalysis under higher concentrations of Rh.B. The sonophotocatalysis was faster due to greater formation of reactive radicals as well as an increase of the active surface area of the $Bi_2Se_3-GR/TiO_2$ composites. The high activity is attributed to the synergetic effects of high charge mobility and red shift of the absorption edge of $Bi_2Se_3-GR/TiO_2$.

  • This study investigates the potential of bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM) for efficient modeling of temporal information in crop classification using multitemporal remote sensing images. Unlike unidirectional LSTM models that consider only either forward or backward states, Bi-LSTM could account for temporal dependency of time-series images in both forward and backward directions. This property of Bi-LSTM can be effectively applied to crop classification when it is difficult to obtain full time-series images covering the entire growth cycle of crops. The classification performance of the Bi-LSTM is compared with that of two unidirectional LSTM architectures (forward and backward) with respect to different input image combinations via a case study of crop classification in Anbadegi, Korea. When full time-series images were used as inputs for classification, the Bi-LSTM outperformed the other unidirectional LSTM architectures; however, the difference in classification accuracy from unidirectional LSTM was not substantial. On the contrary, when using multitemporal images that did not include useful information for the discrimination of crops, the Bi-LSTM could compensate for the information deficiency by including temporal information from both forward and backward states, thereby achieving the best classification accuracy, compared with the unidirectional LSTM. These case study results indicate the efficiency of the Bi-LSTM for crop classification, particularly when limited input images are available.

  • The growth kinetics of intermetallic compound layers formed between eutectic Sn-58Bi solder and (Cu, electroless Ni-P/Cu) substrate were investigated at temperature between 70 and 120 C for 1 to 60 days. The layer growth of intermetallic compound in the couple of the Sn-58Bi/Cu and Sn-58Bi/electroless Ni-P system satisfied the parabolic law at given temperature range. As a whole, because the values of time exponent (n) have approximately 0.5, the layer growth of the intermetallic compound was mainly controlled by volume diffusion over the temperature range studied. The apparent activation energies of Cu$_{6}$Sn$_{5}$ and Ni$_3$Sn$_4$ intermetallic compound in the couple of the Sn-58Bi/Cu and Sn-58Bi/electroless Ni-P were 127.9 and 81.6 kJ/mol, respectively.ely.
