  • The geology of the Kualakulun area in Middle Kalimantan, Indonesia comprises Permian to Carboniferous Pinoh Metamorphic Rocks and Cretaceous Sepauk Plutonics of the Sunda Shield, late Eocene Tanjung Formation, Oligocene Malasan Volcanics, Oligocene to early Miocene Sintang Intrusives and Quaternary alluvium. Sepauk Plutonic rocks are classified as the calc-alkaline series and the S-type granite. Sintang Intrusive rocks are basic-intermediate and intermediate rocks, and consists of basalt, basaltic andesite, basaltic trachyandesite and trachyandesite. The Malasan Volcanics are characterized by intermediate dacitic pyroclasticl and minor lavas and belong to the subalkaline (calc-alkaline and tholeiitic) series. The whole-rock K-Ar ages of the fine-grained biotite granites and medium-grained granitoids were determined to be 100.5-106.5 Ma and 91.9-102.6 Ma, respectively. The whole-rock K-Ar age of the diorite is 89.1 Ma. K-Ar ages of the Malasan Volcanics and Shintang intrusives show 31.5-36.8 Ma and 24.6-34.5 Ma, respectively, and correspond to the Tertiary time.

  • Whole rock and mineral ages for the Jecheon Granite distributed in the Ogcheon Fold Belt were dated by three radiometric methods, and its thermal history was elucidated as follows, on the basis of isotopic age data. Rb and Sr isotopic compositions of three whole rock and seven mineral concentrates made an isochron of 202.7${\pm}$ 1.9 Ma with a strontium initial ratio of 0.7140. Different age data of twelve mineral concentrates agree closely with the retention temperature of each mineral in K-Ar and Fission Track methods. The Jecheon granitic magma was generated by partial melting of crustal materials (S-type), or by mixins between mantle and crustal materials, intruded into the katazone or mesozone (7∼9 km) of the Ogcheon Fold Belt, at least in the Early Jurassic (about 203 Ma), and then crystallized and cooled down rapidly from about 600$^{\circ}C$ to 300$^{\circ}C$ (more than 20$^{\circ}C$/Ma), owing to thermal differences between the magma and the wall-rock. During the Middle to Late Jurassic (190∼140 Ma), the cooling of the granite was likely to stop and keep thermal equilibrium with the wall-rock. The severe tectonism associated with igneous activities and active weathering on the surface in Early to Late Cretaceous time (140∼70 Ma) might have accelerated the granite pluton to uplift rapidly (40∼60 m/Ma in average) up to 3∼4 km and cooled down from 300$^{\circ}C$ to 200$^{\circ}C$ (1.4 $^{\circ}C$/Ma). The granite pluton was likely to keep different uplifting and cooling rate of about 120 m/Ma and 5$^{\circ}C$/Ma in average from the Late Cretaceous to Early Tertiary (70∼50 Ma), and about 60 m/Ma and 2$^{\circ}C$/Ma in average from about 50 Ma up to the present, respectively.

  • Devonian Geochang foliated granite and Jurassic plutonic rocks intrude Precambrian metamorphic Complex at Geochang area, southern part of the Korean Peninsular. Among them hornblendes from four Jurassic plutonic bodies which have had no trace of metamorphism or deformation since their intrusion were dated by K-Ar method. Hornblende gabbro dike which intruded Anorthosite of unknown age revealed $204{\pm}10Ma$, and hornblende granite and hornblende-biotite granodiorite were $178{\pm}9Ma$ and $181{\pm}9Ma$, repectively. Also, hornblende diorite which partly showing primary foliations were $178{\pm}9Ma$, so igneous activity of Geochang area, northern part of Jirisan, were active about 180 Ma before. Microprobe data of dated hornblends and other major constituent minerals such as plagioclases and biotites were also reported, and their chemical composition showed systematic changes in terms of lithologic types.

  • Samples of porphyries, andesites, decites and sandstones were collected from 14 sites in order to study paleomagnetism and to determine K-Ar age in Guryongpo area. K-Ar age dating indicates that porphyries and volcanic rocks formed 41.7 and 22.7~19.4Ma, respectively. The mean direction of remanent magnetization for each site was generally well grouped after alternating field demagnetization. Both normal and reversed directions are present. The mean magnetic direction of the porphyries of Late Eocene and that of the volcanic rocks of Late Oligocene to Early Miocene have similar, easterly declinations. Overall magnetic direction is $Dm=43.8^{\circ}$, $Im=53.5^{\circ}$, ${\alpha}95=12.2^{\circ}$. the reliability of the observed paleomagnetic directions is ascertained by the presence of normal and reversed polarities. This is also conformed by the similarity of the declinations of the normal and reversed polarities. Observed easterly declinations in this area are attributed to local clockwise rotation of the land mass by approximately 40~50 degrees since early Miocene.

  • K-Ar age determinations were carried out on muscovite and other gangue and wallrock alteration minerals from seventeen mineral deposits in the Taebaeg mountain district. Tin deposits give the ages of 1792 Ma and 158-127 Ma, whereas tungsten-molybdenum deposits give the ages of 1520-1480 Ma. 173-168 Ma and 84-81 Ma. Polymetallic mineral deposits. gold-silver deposits and sericite deposits yield the ages of 98-52 Ma. 93-75 Ma, and 202 Ma, respectively. Mineralization ages for each genetic type of deposits in this district can be summarized as follows; pegmatite deposits. 1792 Ma ; pegmatite-hydrothermal deposits. 1526-1480 Ma ; greisen deposits. 157-127 Ma ; skarn deposits, 98-73 Ma and 52 Ma ; hydrothermal deposits, 202-168 Ma and 93-76 Ma. Present results together with data available in the literature reveal that five distinct mineralization ages can be recognized in this district ; (1) 1792 Ma, (2) 1526-1480 Ma, (3) 202-127 Ma. (4) 98-73 Ma, (5) 52 Ma, These age data are similar to the reported radiometric age data of igneous rocks in this district except for two ages such as 2154-2084 Ma and 880-738 Ma.

  • Biennial serial cephalometric radiographs of 47 children (26 boys, 21 girls) were used to analyze the craniofacial growth changes in Korean children from 8 years to 16 years of age. A craniofacial model was designed for this study. It consisted of 72 anatomical points and 98 derived points. The craniofacial changes of these samples during these ages might be summarized as follows: 1. Mandibular growth to cranial base was more forward than maxillary growth. 2. Mandibular growth during this period was found to be a forward-upward (bite closing) rotation of the mandible. 3. Growth changes in total mandibular length (Ar-Gn) showed a pubertal growth spurt at 12-14 years of age in boys and 10-12 years of age in girls. Synchrony of the growth spurts on total mandibular length (Ar-Gn) and standing body height was found. 4. The pubertal spurts occured in the growth of total cranial base (Ba-Na) at 10-12 years of age in boys and 8-10 years of age in girls. The time of the spurts of the cranial base growth was 2 years ahead of that of the total mandibular growth. 5. Synchrony of growth spurts in anterior facial height (Na-Me), posterior facial height (S-Go) and body height was found. 6. The whole craniofacial changes during this period were plotted by using a X-Y plotter and personal computer. A simple profilogram for an diagnostic tool was obtained.

  • Postpubertal craniofacial growth changes were assessed from serial lateral cephalograms taken at which subjects were 16 and 18 years of age. The sample consisted of 19 male and 14 female subjects with no previous orthodontic treatment who had normal occlusion. The craniofacial growth changes of these samples during this study period might be summarized as follows 1. Significant increase in mean maxillary and mandibular length, cranial base length, posterior md anterior facial height were observed at the age period studied in male(P<0.05), however, in female significant increase was observed only mandibular length(Ar-Gn, Ar-Go) and anterior and posterior facial height(P<0.05). 2. Total growth increment of all measumenats were below 1mm in female, but in male, total mandibular(Ar-Gn) growth increment was 2.0mm and those of mandibular tody length, ram length, posterior facial height, and anteior facial height were 1 to 1.54mm and the others were below 1mm 3. A closing, forward rotation of the mandible occured with a significant decrease in mandibular plane angle of $0.61^{\circ}$ in male(P<0.01). 4. Summarized the findings, even though statistically significant growth changes in some dimensions of female were observed, the amount of growth change were very small, however, in male the growth changes of some dimensions associated with mandible were significant and considerable amount.

  • In order to investigate the possibility of using a cervical vertebral maturation indicator as a mandibular growth indicator, the relationship of cervical vertebral maturation and mandibular & body height growth changes was assessed in biennial serial lateral cephalometric radiographs of eighteen korean male and fourteen korean female while they were 8.5 to 18.5 years old. The following results were obtained. 1. It was a reliable method to evaluate skeletal maturation by using cervical vertebrae. 2. In general, cervical vertebral maturation stages of females were higher than those of males at the same age and there were significant differences in statistics at the age of 10.5, 14.5. 3. The age of a female at the same cervical vertebral maturation stage were earlier than that of a male. 4. In the case of males, significant Ar-Gn increases were found between stage 3 and 4,5; Ar-Go increases between stage 4 and 5. 5. In the case of females, significant S-Gn and Ar-Gn increases were (end between stage 3 and 4. 6. Significant body height increases were found between stage 3 and 4 in both sexes. 7. The peak velocity of body height and mandibular length was observed between cervical vertebral maturation stage 3 and 4 in both sexes. 8. The relationship between mandibular & body height changes and specific maturation stage of cervical vertebra was found, therfore using a cervical vertebral maturation indicator as mandibular growth indicator is quite within realms of possibility.
