  • Veterinary antibiotics (VAs) in animal compost and organic fertilizer can have adverse effect on ecosystem and eventually human health. The main purpose of this research was to evaluate feasibility of Charm II system for monitoring residuals of VAs in animal compost and organic fertilizer. Four different VAs (Tetracyclines: TCs, Sulfonamides: SAs, Macrolides: MLs, and ${\beta}$-lactams: ${\beta}$-LTs) were analyzed and total of 100 samples were monitored. Results reveled that SAs in animal compost showed the highest detection frequency (64%) with exceeded concentration of criteria. However, very low detection frequency (0-12%) for ${\beta}$-LTs was observed in animal compost and organic fertilizer. Depending on physicochemical properties of each VAs, detection frequency of VAs was determined. In conclusion, charm II system can be utilized to screen if residual of VAs is in animal compost and organic fertilizer. Also, more research is necessary to establish standard method for analysis of VAs in complex matrix and to minimize adverse effect of VAs from source to environment.

  • Although silicon (Si) has been Down to be an essential element fer rice growth, the optimum soil level of Si for upland crops remains unestablished. This study was conducted to estimate the availability of Si fertilizer in upland soils, and also effect of the Si fertilizer on soil pH was examined. Different application rates of Si fertilizer were tested using faur soils of different available Si levels and pHs in a series of laboratory incubation study. The treatments included Si fertilizer levels of 100, 200, and 300 kg/10a. Also to examine the effects of compost and lime on the availability of Si fertilizer in upland soil, treatment of silicate fertilizer 200 kg/10a + compost 1,000 kg/10a and lime alone treatment were included. Changes of Si availability in the soils during the incubation period were measured by 1 N NaOAc extraction procedure. Availability of Si fertilizer was different among the tested soils, and about $9.1{\sim}19.2%$ of the applied Si fertilizer was extracted after 60 days laboratory incubation. Application rate could not influence the availability of Si fertilizer. Application of compost with Si fertilizer could not increase Si availability in upland soils, but lime treatment could increase Si availability. Soil pH increased by application of Si fertilizer, but the effect of Si fertilizer on soil pH was minimal. When Si fertilizer is applied on the purpose of Si nutrition in acid upland soils, lime treatment should be coupled with the Si fertilizer for remediation of soil acidity.

  • Organic amendment practices can influence diversity and activities of soil microorganisms. There is a need to investigate this impact compared with other types of materials. This study was carried out to evaluate the long term effects of chemical and organic fertilizer on soil microbial community in upland field. During the last 11 years green manure, rice straw compost, rapeseed cake, pig mature compost, NPK, and NPK + pig mature compost were treated in upland soil. Organic fertilizer treatment found with high bacterial colony forming units (CFUs) as compared to chemical and without fertilizer treatment. There was no significant difference in the actinomycetes and fungal population. The average well color development (AWCD) value was the highest in green manure and, the lowest in without fertilizer treatment. Analyses based on the denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) profile showed that rice straw compost and pig mature compost had a similar banding pattern while rapeseed cake, NPK, NPK + pig mature compost and without fertilizer treatment were clustered in another cluster and clearly distinguished from green manure treatment. Bacterial diversity can be highly increased by the application of organic fertilizer while chemical fertilizer had less impact. It can be concluded that green manure had a beneficial impact on soil microbial flora, while, the use of chemical fertilizer could affect the soil bacterial communities adversely.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the influence of $K_{2}O$ fertilizer application on growth, yield and lodging resistance of rice. Culm length and panicle length were lowest at the treatment of fertilizer level, $N-P_{2}O_{5}-K_{2}O=16-8-8$ plot but number of panicle, percentage of fruitful culm, $1{\ell}$ grain weights of paddy rice and brown rice, 1,000 grains weight of brown rice, brown rice ratio, yields of paddy rice and brown rice were highest at the treatment of fertilizer level, $N-P_{2}O_{5}-K_{2}O=16-8-8$ kg/10a plot. Bending moment, breaking strength and lodging index were lowest at the treatment of fertilizer level, $N-P_{2}O_{5}-K_{2}O=16-8-8$ kg/10a plot. Judging from the results reported above, an optimum fertilizer level of rice for lodging resistance is most likely be $N-P_{2}O_{5}-K_{2}O=16-8-8$ kg/10a treatment.

  • In order to investigate the treatment efficiency of pollutants in free water surface constructed wetlands (FWS CWs) with lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) cultivation pond, the experiment was consisted of two sites (site I and II) in Lake Juam, Korea. The sites were configured a lotus cultivation pond (with fertilizer application) - a dropwort bed - a reed bed for site I, and a lotus cultivation pond (without fertilizer application) - a dropwort bed - a reed bed for site II. Removal rate of COD in site I and II were 13.3% and 26.0%, respectively. Removal rate of total nitrogen (TN) was 29.7% for site I, and 36.3% for site II. Removal rate of total phosphorus (TP) in site I and II were 36.0% and 36.5%, respectively. COD, TN and TP in effluent from site I (with fertilizer) was higher than that in site II (without fertilizer), showing that COD, TN and TP in effluent were strongly influenced by fertilizer addition. Therefore, in order to satisfy established water-quality standards, the amount of fertilizer used in lotus cultivation showed be evaluated.

  • Monitoring of soil fertility and crop productivity in long-term application of fertilizers is necessary to use fertilizers efficiently. This study was conducted to investigate effects of continuous application of lime for rice cultivation from 1969 to 2014. The treatments were no lime treatments (N, NPK, NPKC, and NPKS) and lime treatments (N+L, NPK+L, NPKC+L, and NPKS+L). The application of lime in addition to N, NPK, and NPKC tended to increase pH, exchangeable Ca, and available $SiO_2$. The input of mean annual $1,170Mg\;ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$ of lime increased pH $0.0042yr^{-1}$, $0.0062yr^{-1}$, $0.0127yr^{-1}$, and $0.0041yr^{-1}$ in lime treatments (N+L, NPK+L, NPKS+L, and NPKC+L) compared with no treatments (N, NPK, NPKS, and NPKC), respectively. The mean annual Ca field balance varied from 169 to $561kg\;ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$in no treatments, from 871 to $1,263kg\;ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$ in lime treatments, indicating that Ca was accumulated in the soils. The mean annual Ca field balance in silicate fertilizer treatments (NPKS, NPKS+L) were higher than that of other treatments because silicate fertilizer included Ca component. Grain yield of rice had no significant differences between no lime treatments and lime treatments. Thus the application of lime led to changes in soil chemical properties but had no impact on the production of rice.

  • In order to establish environmentally friendly phosphorus(P) and potassium(K) fertilizer application rates for rice cultivation in Korea, a field experiment was conducted in two different characterized paddy soils, higher and lower P and K content in soil from 2005 to 2006 in Suwon, Korea. Chuchong which is typical rice variety in Korea, was selected for experiment. Rice yields in base P-K fertilizer level ($30-30kg\;ha^{-1}$) and no P-K fertilizer level were 97~98% and 93~97% of standard P-K fertilizer level ($45-57kg\;ha^{-1}$), respectively. At the lower content of P and K in immatured paddy soil, the yield of no P plot was decreased by 7% compared to that of standard P-K plot. Significant difference in rice yield and yield characteristics was found neither in standard P-K fertilization plot nor in base P-K fertilization plot. There was no significant difference in P and K uptake at the harvest stage between standard P-K fertilizer plot and base P-K fertilizer plot. Phosphorus and K uptake was slightly decreased in no fertilizer plots compared to standard fertilizer plot. Phosphorus and K use efficiency of rice plant in base fertilizer plot was higher than that in standard fertilizer plot. Available phosphorus and exchangeable potassium content in soil at the harvest stage were increased in both standard and base fertilizer plot. But no significant difference of P and K content in ? was found between standard fertilizer plot and base fertilizer plot. Rice quality characteristics such as proportion of brewers rice, damaged kernel, broken rice, and content of amylose and protein were lowered in the base fertilizer plot than the standard fertilized plot, while the proportion of perfect kernel increased in the base fertilizer plot From the results, we generally recommend the base P-K fertilization ($30-30kg\;ha^{-1}$) instead of standard P-K fertilization ($45-57kg\;ha^{-1}$) for rice cultivation in Korea.

  • The importance of environment-friendly agriculture is being magnified as a new growth engine industry in pursuit of low carbon, green growth policies. Since 2010, the Korean government has been promoting the supply of customized fertilizers which were manufactured based on chemical properties of agricultural soils. This aims focused to improve the efficiency of fertilizer used and to protect the agricultural environment. In order to provide technical supports for pushing ahead with the environment-friendly agriculture policies, we have estimated the effects of customized fertilization (CF) on growth and yield of rice and fertilizer reduction compared to conventional fertilization (farm practice fertilization) and single-element fertilization. In rice plant growth and rice yield, no statistically significant difference between the three fertilization treatments was observed. The fertilizer reduction rate with CF compared to conventional fertilization of investigated farms was on average 17%, which covered 6% through 33%. With split ratio, CF 70 reduced the amounts of fertilizer ingredient by 5% compare to CF 50. This paper shows that the customized fertilizer application reduced the amounts of fertilizer used in rice cultivation without decrease of yields.
