  • 'Hangangchal 1' is a new glutinous rice cultivar of second generation Tongil-type with a mid-maturing ecotype that developed by the rice breeding team of Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute (YARI), RDA. in 2006. This cultivar was derived from a cross between 'Hangangchal', a Tongil-type glutinous cultivar and 'YR8208-20', a high yield potential in 1986/1987 winter season. 'Hangangchal 1' was selected by pedigree and bulk breeding methods from $F_3$ to $F_6$ populations. A promising line, YR10498-8-1-3, was selected and designated as 'Milyang 167' in 1997. The local adaptability test of 'Milyang 167' was carried out at seven locations during 3 years in 1998, 2005, and 2006. It has tolerance to lodging with good canopy architecture as 87cm of culm length. This cultivar is resistant to bacterial blight $K_1$, $K_2$, and $K_3$ race, rice stripe virus, rice dwarf virus, and leaf blast disease. The milled rice endosperm of 'Hangangchal 1' is glutinous and its whiteness was almost similar compared to 'Shinseonchalbyeo'. The yield of milled rice of 'Hangangchal 1' was average 5.97 MT/ha at ordinary cultivation of 9 kg/10a N fertilizer level in local adaptability test. This cultivar would be adaptable to the mid and southern plain of Korea.

  • In maize, knowledge of genetic diversity and genetic relationships among elite inbred lines is an significant impact on the selection of parental lines for hybrid varieties. Genetic diversity and genetic relationships among 11 parental inbred lines of Korean waxy and normal corn varieties were analyzed using 50 SSR markers distributed over the whole genome. A total of 171 allele bands were detected with an average of 3.4 alleles per locus. Number of allele bands per locus ranged from two to six and gene diversity varied from 0.165 to 0.900 with an average of 0.596 depending on the SSR loci. The cluster tree recognized three major groups with 61.6% genetic similarity. Group I includes 7 inbred lines (KL103, HW1, HW4, HW6, HW7, HW8, HW9), with similarity coefficients of between 0.616 and 0.730. Group II includes 2 inbred lines (HF1, HF2), with similarity coefficients of 0.959. Group III includes 2 inbred lines (HW3, HW5), with similarity coefficients of 0.713. The present study indicates that the SSR markers chosen for this analysis are effective for the assessment of genetic diversity and genetic relationships among 11 parental inbred lines.

  • "Sangok", is a new japonica rice variety (Oryza sativa L.), which is a midium maturing ecotype developed by the rice breeding team of National Yeongnam Agricultural Experiment Station (NYAES) in 2003. This variety was derived from the cross of Milyang 101/YR8697Acp97 (in 1988/1989 winter) and selected by combination of the bulk and pedigree breeding. The pedigree of Sangokbyeo, designated as Milyang 182 in 2000, was YR12950-B-B-B-19-2-4-2-2. It has about 79cm stature in culm length and is medium maturing. This variety is resistant to bacterial blight ($K_1$, $K_2$, and $K_3$), stripe virus and moderately resistant to leaf blast disease. Milled rice kernels of "Sangok" is translucent, clear in chalkness and good at eating quality in the panel test. The yield potential of "Sangok" in milled rice is about 5.16MT/ha at ordinary fertilizer level of local adaptability test. This cultivar would be adaptable to the southern plain of Korea below the Chungnam province by latitude from ordinary transplanting to transplanting after barley harvest.

'Gangbaek' was derived from a cross between 'Suweon345' with good grain quality and 'DV85' resistant to bacterial blight, $K_{3a}$. $F_1$ plants were grown in the greenhouse in winter of 1992/1993 and backcrossed with 'Suweon345' as the recurrent parent. Plants resistant to $K_{3a}$ race of bacterial blight (BB) were selected from $BC_1F_1$ to $BC_4F_1$ and used as parents in the backcrossing processes. This variety has about 120 days growth duration from transplanting to harvesting in west-southern coast and Honam plain of Korea. It is about 69 cm in culm length and tolerance to lodging. In reaction to biotic and abiotic stresses, it shows moderately resistance to blast, and resistance to bacterial blight pathogen, $K_1$, $K_2$, $K_3$ and $K_{3a}$, but susceptible to other major diseases and insect pests. The milled rice of 'Gangbaek' exhibits translucent, relatively clear non-glutinous endosperm and midium short grain. It has lower amylose content of 18.6% and protein content of 6.4% compared with 'Nampyeongbyeo'. The milled rice yield performance of this variety is about 5.28 MT/ha in local adaptability test for three years. This cultivar would be adaptable to the bacterial blight-prone area in the south-western coastal and Honam plain of Korea.

  • A new rice cultivar, 'Joami', was developed by the rice breeding team of Sangju Substation, National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), Rural Development Administration. It was selected by a bulk and pedigree methods from a cross-combination among 'Sambaegbyeo', 'Yukara', and 'Tonggae112'. A promising line of YR20557-1-1-3-B-3 was designated as 'Sangju 36' in 2006. Local adaptability test of 'Sangju 36' was conducted at ten sites throughout the Korean peninsula during three years from 2006 to 2008. 'Sangju 36', thereafter, was registered as 'Joami' in 2008. The cultivar headed on July 30 in the test of local adaptability. Endosperm of 'Joami' is translucent with clear chalkiness and has 5.4% higher head rice ratio than that of 'Odaebyeo'. The yield potential of 'Joami' in milled rice is about 5.40 MT/ha under ordinary fertilizer level of local adaptability test, which was 6% higher than that of 'Odaebyeo'. In an alpine area of Korea, the rice variety needs a cold tolerance and a resistance to blast disease. 'Joami' showed a tolerance reaction at Chuncheon cold tolerance screening nursery and exhibited resistance reaction to blast disease in nation-wide disease screening nursery. Therefore, 'Joami' would be well adaptable to mid-mountainous area at central and southern part of Korean peninsula.
