  • The current status of the computer codes for the analysis of coupled thermal-hydrological-mechanical behavior occurred in a high-level waste repository was investigated. Based on the reported results on the comparison between the predictions using the computer codes and the experimental data from the in-situ tests, the reliability of the existing computer codes was analyzed. The presented codes simulated considerably well the coupled thermal-hydrological-mechanical behavior in the near-field rock of the repository without buffer, but the predictions for the engineered barrier system of the repository located at saturated hard rock were not satisfactory. To apply the current thermal-hydrological-mechanical models to the assessment of the performance of engineered barrier system, a major improvement on the mathematical models which analyze the distribution of water content and total pressure in the buffer is required.

  • The basic function of HLW disposal system is to prevent excessive radio-nuclides being leaked from the repository in a short time. To do this, many technical standards should be developed and established on the components of disposal system. Safety assessment of a repository is considered as one of technical standards, because it produces quantitative results of the future evolution of a repository based on a reasonably simplified model. In this paper, we investigated other countries' regulations related to safely assessment focused on the assessment period, radiation dose limits and uncertainties of the assessment. Especially, in the investigation process of the USA regulations, the USA regulatory bodies' approach to assessment period and peak dose is worth taking into account in case of a conflict between peak dose from safety assessment and limited value in regulation.

  • For the purpose of the sharing and reusability of software systems in an integrated CASE environment, it is necessary to develope the repository-based integrated software environment. In this paper, we designed and implemented the repository interface between CASE tools and IRDS service interface. We have already implemented the IRDS service interface system according to ANSI IRDS standard in order to develop a repository of an integrated CASE environment. We implemented the repository interface using the CLI(Call Level Interface) method that is composed callable run-time libraries.

  • Radionuclide released from corroded container migrates through groundwater flow pathway in the underground rock. Therefore it is important to study the groundwater flow analysis for total system performance assessment of a HLW repository. In this study assuming a geological change of underground rock in future, the two dimensional groundwater flow analysis is done by the NAMMU, the assessment code for groundwater flow in porous media. Assuming the hypothetical repository with the reactivation of fault in the vicinity of it, the effect of change in aperture and permeability by reactivation of fault around a repository on groundwater pathway is studied.

  • It has been commonly accepted for a while that a successful tool environment must provide for smooth interfaces between its tools. Recent integrated CASE environment must be-based on well-integrated data repository which supports a tightly coupled, consistent environment. For the maintenance tool, it requires a careful design of the maintenance chest's database. Information about a program exists in many different forms after analyses have been performed. It must be possible to associate and select objects for data repository from this information as necessary. This paper suggests a new integrated scheme for the data repository in building software maintenancec environment. The scheme provides many basic services, including storage and management of objects/entities and links/ relations; version and configuration control, query service, data interchange service.

  • ln general, hospital information system should provide interoperability hat usually and operate independence of other HIS. This study proposes a new HIS paradigm that can be implemented within standard HL7 Interface engine and clinical data repository (CDR). We have developed an alternative architecture relying on agent solutions with distributed queries to heterogeneous databases. This architecture creates a very fine and flexible repository that can handle queries with the bases of standard HL7 messaging structure. Deploying Agent solutions to manipulate autonomy of storage management and sociality for communication with open world is another issue that keeps this system from reinventing existing wheels in medical informatics. This study the first attempt to construct CDR based private clinic. We used the information stored in the clinical patient record system of the internal medicine private hospital which is used rational database. We were searched increasing the 1,000 data entry from 1,000 to 10,000. By the result, experimental CDR showed highly efficient performance more than 6,000. In the future, the CDR can be further extended for clinical information among private hospitals estranged from EHR (Electronic Health Records).

  • As an alternative to conventional management options for a lot of concrete waste from decommissioning of nuclear power plants, a set of scenarios for controlled recycling of decommissioning concrete waste as engineered barriers of a radioactive waste repository was proposed, and a comprehensive safety assessment model and framework covering both pre-and post-closure phases was newly developed. The new methodology was applied to a reference vault-type repository, and the ratios of derived concentration limits to unconditional clearance levels of eighteen radionuclides for controlled recycling were provided for three sets of dose criteria (0.01, 1, and 20 mSv/y for the pre-closure and 0.01 mSv/y for the post-closure phases). It turns out that decommissioning concrete waste whose concentration is much higher than the unconditional clearance level can be recycled even when the dose criterion 0.01 mSv/y is applied. Moreover, a case study on ABWR bio-shield shows that the fraction of recyclable concrete waste increases significantly by increasing the dose criterion for the radiation worker in the pre-closure phase or the duration of storage prior to recycling. The results of this study are expected to contribute to demonstrating the feasibility of controlled recycling of a lot of decommissioning concrete waste within nuclear sectors.

  • Bentonite is a recommended material for the multiple barriers in the final disposal of low-level radioactive waste (LLW) to prevent groundwater intrusion and nuclear species migration. However, after drying-wetting cycling during the repository construction stage and ion exchange with the concrete barrier in the long-term repository, the bentonite mechanical behaviors, including swelling capacity and hydraulic conductivity, would be further influenced by the groundwater intrusion, resulting in radioactive leakage. To comprehensively examine the factors on the mechanical characteristics of bentonite, this study presented scenarios involving MX-80 and KV-1 bentonites subjected to drying-wetting cycling and accelerated ion migration. The experiments subsequently measured free swelling, swelling pressure, and hydraulic conductivity of bentonites with intrusions of seawater, high pH, and low pH solutions. The results indicated that the solutions caused a reduction in swelling volume and pressure, and an increase in hydraulic conductivity. Specifically, the swelling capability of bentonite with drying-wetting cycling in the seawater decreased significantly by 60%, while hydraulic conductivity increased by more than three times. Therefore, the study suggested minimizing drying-wetting cycling and preventing seawater intrusion, ensuring a long service life of the multiple barriers in the LLW repository.

  • Currently, various research institutes in Korea are conducting research to develop a safety case for deep geological repository for high-level radioactive waste (HLW). In the past, low and intermediate-level waste (LILW) was approved by a regulatory body by performing a post-closure safety assessment, but HLW has different disposal characteristics and safety objectives are different. Therefore, in the case of HLW, safety assessment should be performed based on these changed conditions, and specific procedures are also under development. In this paper, the regulatory status of prior research institutes, feature, event and process (FEP) and scenario development cases were investigated for well-organized FEP and scenario development methodologies. In addition, through the results of these surveys, the requirements and procedures necessary for the FEP and scenario development stage during the safety assessment of repository for HLW were presented. These review results are expected to be used to identify the overall status of previous studies in conducting post-closure risk assessment for HLW repository, starting with identifying regulatory requirements, the most basic element.

  • The combination of data warehousing and Internet technology produces a new concept - web warehousing. Due to the availability of web technologies and the need to make prompt decisions with timely information, web warehousing is emerging as a key strategic business weapon. Yet despite the many promising benefits of web warehousing, researchers have also identified several challenges, including scalability and availability. With the rise of the Internet and data centric computing applications, the use of new Storage Area Network (SAN) technology has been spotlighted for the possibility of a new data repository for web warehousing. In this article, the two new concepts of web warehousing and storage area networks are introduced. In particular, a SAN is discussed in detail as an alternative data repository to overcome the current limitations of web warehousing.
