  • Objectives : The purpose of this paper is to establish theoretical bases upon which to complement the clinical evidence in representative literature (Hwangjenaegyeong;黃帝內經)of Korean medicine. Methods : We searched applicable paragraphs about thermotherapy and cryotherapy in Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經) and defined them as historical and theoretical bases of thermotherapy and cryotherapy in korean medicine. Results : The meridian muscle treatment originated from Young-Chu(靈樞) was developed for many centuries. Five paragraphs about thermotherapy and one paragraph about cryotherapy are in Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經). These records to treat the disease of the muscle meridian are enough to explain historical and theoretical evidences. Conclusions : Thermotherapy and cryotherapy of meridian muscle are treatments which are used widely in Korean medicine. They mean that thermotherapy and cryotherapy has been explained under the system of Korean medicine. It is necessary for more literatural study and clinical trials to be carried out to secure the evidence of physical therapies in Korean medicine.

  • This study was performed to report the effectiveness of modified fasting therapy using very-low-calorie-diet on a patient with obesity. The patient was diagnosed as severe obesity and participated in a 14-day fast with the Signature, a liquor which is made from fermented medical herbs and carbohydrates (intake <600 kcal/day) accompanying 7 prefasting relief days, and 16 days with stepwise reintroduction of food. The fasting patient also received intensive oriental medical treatments such as acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping therapy and was encouraged to take more than two hours' of walking exercise a day. We have evaluated the efficacy of treatments by measuring the changes of body composition and blood chemistry according to each period of fasting therapy. After treatment, Body Fat Mass of the patient was decreased more than Muscle Mass and the level of AST, ALT was decreased to normal range. These results suggest that the modified fasting therapy was effective on the patient with obesity.

  • Objectives : Yongdamgosam-hwan(YGH) has been used as a traditional medicine from old times for antiinflammatory effects. Streptococcus mutans(S. mutans) is known as a prime bacteria responsible for causing caries by forming a biofilm referred to as dental plaque on the tooth surface. But antimicrobial activity of YGH with dental disease is not sufficiently understood. This study was designed to investigate the effects of YGH ethanol extract on antimicrobial effect against Streptococcus mutans. Methods : The antimicrobial effect of YGH ethanol extract was assessed by the paper disk diffusion method and optical density method to determine minimum inhibition concentration(MIC), also observed by fractional inhibitory concentration index(FICI) and time-kill assay to figure out the synergic effect on the combination of YGH ethanol extract with antibiotics. Results : The YGH ethanol extract 500 μg was 7.5-8.5 mm diameter of clear zone of inhibition against Streptococcus mutans in a concentration-dependent manner and MIC was 250 μg/mL. The administration of the ethanol extract in combination with gentamicin and streptomycin induced a reduction of ≥4-8-fold in all tested bacteria. Furthermore, time-kill study was found that a combination of YGH ethanol extract with oxacillin and streptomycin produced a more rapid decrease in the concentration of bacteria CFU/mL than the YGH ethanol extract or antibiotics alone. Conclusions : As a result, the YGH ethanol extract has good antimicrobial effects. And the results suggest that YGH could be employed as a natural antibacterial agent in dental care products.

  • Objectives : This study examined search on how the obesity indices, that are largely used in clinics such as waist circumference(WC), body mass index(BMI) and waist-hip ratio(WHR), are related to the visceral fat that was measured from abdominal computed tomography(CT) and the ratio of visceral fat/subcutaneous fat. Then, two groups ware compared in order to find out which characteristics of ordinary adults relationship with the abdominal obesity. Two groups are divided as follows; ones who are obese based on the measurement of WC and the others who are obese based on the level of BMI. Methods : A group of 63 test subjects that were gathered in the oriental medical hospital of Kyung-Won university is divided into two groups; ones (n=51, general obesity; group A) who have $BMI{\geq}25$ and $WC{\geq}85$, and the others (n=12, abdominal obesity; group B) who have BMI<25 and $WC{\geq}85$. Then, each group's obesity indices, abdominal CT, lipid level, glucose, adiponectin, leptin and C-reactive protein(CRP) are compared. In addition, subjects are again divided into two to examine the characteristics; ones (n=14, visceral obesity; group C) with visceral obesity based on the ratio between visceral fat and subcutaneous fat measured through abdominal CT, and the others (n=38, non-visceral obesity; group D) who are obese but not viscerally obese. Results & Conclusions : As a measurement that applies abdominal visceral fat and subcutaneous fat, BMI and WC can be considered as an appropriate obesity index while WHR cannot appropriately apply the abdominal fat amount. Moreover, the study indicates that abdominal obesity group based on the ratio of visceral fat/subcutaneous fat has more significant difference than the abdominal obesity group based on the WC in case of blood lipid index.
