  • The objective of this study is to report the effectiveness of Korean medical rehabilitation for total knee replacement. Three female patients who had total knee replacement were treated by Korean medical rehabilitation with protocol. We evaluated the consequences by checking numeric rating scale (NRS), Lysholm knee score, physical examination of knee joint and walking state. After Korean medical rehabilitation, we find out that the pain and function were improved. NRS, Lysholm knee score, physical examination of knee joint, walking state of patients were also improved. Korean medical rehabilitation can be effectively used for total knee replacement patients. There is a limit that this study hasn't sufficient number of cases. Further studies are needed to set up a Korean medical rehabilitation protocol.

  • The objective of this study is to report the effectiveness of active postoperative rehabilitation on clavicular fracture by oriental medical interventions and to suggest the importance of proper rehabilitation after operation. A female patient, 43 years old, who had operation for right distal clavicular fracture was treated by oriental medical rehabilitation. We evaluated the consequence by checking numeric rating scale(NRS), shoulder range of motion and shoulder pain and disability index(SPADI). The pain of the patient was decreased and the shoulder range of motion was advanced. SPADI score was decreased. Postoperative-oriental medical rehabilitation can be effectively used for a patient on postoperative state of clavicular fracture. Further studies are needed to set up a rehabilitation protocol with oriental medical interventions after operation.

  • We experienced a case of patient of incomplete spinal cord injury following slipping off his clothes. He had complications : both leg paresisㆍboth arm weaknessㆍurine disturbanceㆍboth leg & arm sensory disorder . We could treat these complications with the methods of medical treatments ; acupunctureㆍmoxa therapyㆍherb-medicationㆍelectro-acupuncture & muscle exercises. We obtained results that motor grade and muscle atrophy were improved.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical effect of acupuncture and electroacupuncture by meridian theory to a patient with writer's cramp. Methods : We treated this patient with only acupuncture and electroacupuncture by meridian theory. We evaluated the state of improvement by time to maintain right 2nd finger extended, Pain Disability Index(PDI). PDI was measured twice before treatment and after 19 weeks. Results and Conclusions : The subject was improved in estimation by time to maintain right 2nd finger extended, PDI. The time was from a few seconds to almost 90 minutes. PDI was from 21 to 17. According to above result, acupuncture and electroacupuncture by meridian theory were effective to improve symptoms of writer's cramp.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to perform quantity and quality assessment of randomized controlled trials(RCTs) in the journal of oriental rehabilitation medicine(JORM). Methods : Upon extracting randomized controlled trial from all the articles published in the JORM from 1991 to 2009, assessments were made on the adequacy of the consolidated standards of reporting trials(CONSORT) checklist. The assessment were performed independently by two researchers, and adjustment of the differences were done by discussions. Results : Among the 824 articles from 1981 to 1999, 33 RCTs were selected. 4 RCTs were published from 1991 to 2002, and 29 RCTs were published from 2003 to 2009. Adequacy of the CONSORT checklist was 29.4%(27.3% from 1999 to 2005, 31.6% from 2006 to 2009). Conclusions : RCTs of the JORM consistently increased in quantity and quality. But researchers should make an effort to reporting more accurate.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to report effectiveness of oriental medical treatments to symptoms and quality of life in the patients with herniated lumbar disc being suggested operation. Methods : Eighteen patients diagnosed with herniated lumbar disc by MRI in hospital were treated by oriental medical treatments. Symptoms of the patients were assessed by visual analogue scale(VAS) and SF-36. Results : After the treatments, the VAS of symptoms of herniated lumbar disc and the score of role-physical scale in SF-36 were improved but the other scores of scales were not significantly different. Conclusions : It could be suggested that oriental medical treatments were effective for the patients with herniated lumbar disc being suggested operation. Further study of the effect of oriental medical treatments on herniated lumbar disc is needed.

  • Objectives : To study the cervical lordosis and roentgenographic analysis of cervical disc space in neck pain with or without temporomandibular disorder(TMD). Methods : Radiographic measures of cervical lordosis, cervical disc space narrowing were collected, statiscally analyzed. Results : TMD group showed a significant increase in cervical lordotic angle as compared with non-TMD group, whereas no significant change in cervical disc degeneration. Conclusions : The findings from this study suggest that the curvature of the cervical spine is related to the subject's TMD.

  • Objectives : This study was conducted to classify the TA(traffic accident) patients who admissed in Oriental Medical Hospital. Methods : We divided TA patients who admissed in Oriental Medical Hospital by age, sex, visited period after onset, impact region, disease, and chief complaint according to a patient classification table, and analyzed their characteristics. Results and Conclusion : The patients who visited within 1 week after TA numbered most(65.4%) in classification by period. Most impact region was neck(80%). Most of TA patients were suffered and treated by cervical(80%) and lumbar(56.9%) sprain.

  • Objectives : To report one case of semi-coma patient was treated by scalp acupuncture with electric stimulation. Methods : Patient (state of semi-coma) was treated by scalp acupuncture with electric stimulation, herbal medication and physical therapy. The improvement of patient was measured every other week by Glasgow Coma Scale(GCS), Modified Bathel Index(MBI), National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale(NIHSS). Results : We observed the patient decrease in NIHSS score and increase in GCS and MBI. Symptoms of patient such as semi-coma were improved following the treatment. Conclusions : It is suggested that oriental medical treatment; scalp acupuncture with electric stimulation, herbal medication and physical therapy were effective in semi-coma caused by traumatic brain injury.
