  • Objective : This study investigated the relationship between warning signs and Sasang constitution (SC) in acute stroke patients. Methods : From October in 2005 to March in 2007, 629 acute stroke patients were studied. Patients were hospitalized within 14 days after the onset ofstroke at one of 3 oriental medical hospitals in Seoul and Kyong-gi province. We assessed the type of SC of acute stroke patients by Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution Classification II (QSCC II). We investigated warning signs (motor weakness, blindness, dysarthria, sensory disturbance, finger dullness, facial & eyelid spasm, neck stiffness), general characteristics, etc. Results : This study showed a higher proportion of Tae-eum & So-eum experience upper extremity sensory disturbance but So-yangexperience lower extremity sensory disturbance. Smoker So-eumexperience 1st & 2nd finger dullness more than non-smoker So-eum. So-eum women experience motor weakness more than So-eum men. Conclusion : Besides these results, we could observe almost no relationship between warning signs and Sasang constitution (SC) in acute stroke patients. More data from prospective cohort studies will help people better understand the relationship between warning signs and Sasang constitution (SC) in acute stroke patients.

  • Angiogenesis is a fundamental process in reproduction and wound healing. Under these condition, neovascularization is tightly regulated. Unregulated angiogenesis may lead to several angiogenic diseases, and is thought to be indispensible for solid tumor growth and metastsis. The construction of new vascular network is a multistep cascade involving basement membrane degradation, endothelial cell proliferation, endothelial cell migration, and tube formation. Newly reported anti-angiogenic agents in oriental medical field have targeted both specific and multistep stages in the angiogenic process. From recent approach in oriental medical field with several herb medicines including activating blood flow and removing blood stasis medicine(活血化瘀藥), it may be possible in the future to develope specific anti-angiogenic agents that offer a less toxic potential therapy for cancer and angiogenic disease.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate distribution of pattern identification by age in stroke patients. Methods: From 1 April, 2007 to 29 September, 2008, 903 patients within a month after onset of stroke were included. Stroke patients were interviewed by oriental medicine doctors who used standard operation procedures for this study. A questionnaire was completed by a question-and-answer form between patients and doctors after explanation of details to patients and patients' agreement given. Results: Distributions of pattern identification in stroke patients differed by age groups. Dampness-Phlegm pattern was more common in the younger group aged under 80 years, while Yin-Deficiency pattern was more common in the older group aged over 80 years. Conclusions: In this study, we found a character of distribution of pattern identification by age in stroke patients within one month after stroke onset. We have concluded that these differences should be considered in the management and treatment of stroke patients.

  • Paljinhangahm-dan is an Oriental herbal formulation for its ability to modulate cancer cell growth and survival. This research was performed to study the anti-cancer effects of Paljinhangahm-dan water extract(PHWE) in human pro myelocytic leukemia(HL-60) cells. After HL-60 cells were routinely cultured, tetrazolium-based colorimetric(MTT) assay was performed for cytotoxicity test. To explore the mechanism of cytotoxicity. I used several measures of apoptosis to determine whether this processes was involved in PHWE-induced cell death in HL-60 cells. In addition, the experiment was practised 1 H-NMR spectroscopy to examine molecular structure of PHWE. This study suggested that PHWE control cancer cell growth through of apoptosis with less cytotoxicity in normal cells.

From the 14 review studies, we noted that literature studies about definition, pathologic mechanism, treatment, pathologic pattern identification of DM and previous study analyses were done. 3. From the 44 experimental studies that are the most common type of DM studies, various Korean medicine treatments such as single medicinal herbs, herbal complexes, diets and pharmacopuncture were used. Anti-diabetic effects were demonstrated in most of the studies. 4. 7 clinical studies about acupuncture, electroacupuncture, herbal medicine, etc. were reported. 5. 8 cases about DM complications and comorbidities were reported. Clinical symptoms improved in all of studies, blood sugar level decreased in four studies. Conclusions : Further clinical and case study based on experimental researches should be performed.

  • This study was designed to analyze the effectiveness of the diagnosis and treatments of hemorrhagic infarction patients in oriental medicine. In this study the clinical symptoms of two hemorrhagic infarction patients improved after diagnosis and treatment of oriental medicine. Though improvement was seen after diagnosis and treatment of both hemorrhagic infarction patients, the early stage of hemorrhagic infarction required western fluid therapy treatments. Study of more cases will be needed in order to varify efficacy for these oriental treatments to be generally applied.
