This special issue is planned to introduce the recent academic state of the Korean geography, as the 32nd International Geographical Congress (IGC) in Cologne, Germany, 2012 is approaching. Korean Geographical Society successfully hosted the 29th IGC 2000 in Seoul and had a chance to introduce trends and achievements of korean geographers at the time. This issue is to review the achievements of korean geography research for the past ten years, and to overview the academic prospect of the korean geography.

This study explains a turning to being cultured and geography management to get closer to popularization and specialization of geography, for which based on the assumption that they are for development of knowledge. It adopts the idea of human's geographical nature to solve the dualism which geography is referred as science and art. An object geographer studies is homogeneous, temporal as well as identifical and individual. To adopt human's geographical nature causes to human's geographical investigation, and uniting positivism to humanism. It deduces from the Bible and Evolutionism that it is characteristic of mobility, adaptabilty, connectivity, ideality, and hybridity. Geographical concepts is based on the fact that it can be applied to geographical research theme. Popularization of geography has to relate to being cultural, and specialization of geography has to relate to geography management.

In order to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the Korean Geographical Society, this paper briefly reviews the development of Korean Geography and its contribution to society. There is no doubt that Korean Geography has become a major subject as a professional Held of study and developed diverse sub-fields. At the same time, individual scholars have positively engaged in advising government on policy making issues, and a trend has developed whereby many scholars tend to find work in major research institutions rather than in universities. These scholars are also contributing to society through professional publications and by their involvement in national/international geographical manors. For the next generation, it is imperative that geographers in Korea meet the national demands of the subject as a professional field and continue to promote the practical necessity of geography together with its identity within the academic circles.

In this paper, we describe two exploratory examples in the use of Augmented Reality (AR) for geographical visualization regarding refinement of visual content in geography textbooks and learning motivation of geography students. Currently, teaching and learning materials with AR technology and their utilization in the geography classroom have become a new topic in geographical research themes, and this trend has increased. Adequate development and utilization of geographical materials is an important starting point for smart education research in geography. This paper describes the system and software, and the implication of marker AR applications for teaching and learning geography in the classroom. For the AR applications to be utilized in geography education, two marker based AR examples, virtual globe and visualization of topographical features, are presented and their utilization aspects are discussed. Finally, from the discussion stated in this paper, it can be inferred that AR is useful for exploring geographical materials, and marker based AR will contribute to progress in spatial science and geographical education research.

This study was investigated to the geography services and geographical directories through Internet in order to develop a geographical directory. Research method was the examination of different type of geography services through internet and geographical directories on the Internet search engines. The results show principles for a geographical directory construction: use both geographical names and subject names on the initial directory screen, repeated use the names through directory hierarchy, locality use on bottom directory as a geographical name, and fit use of the number of directories.

This paper is to inquire into nature of the educated's geography from 1905 to 1910 by researching relevant geographical resources in HAKBO published by the Academic Society. At that time, the Patriotic Enlightenment Movement was active, and the Academic Society attempted to enlighten people, to enrich the country, and to restore the sovereign right. The educated tried to understand the reality in view of social Darwinism and make their country the winner as well as the fit in the struggle for existence by this movement. Their effort can be seen in HAKBO and geography in it. The contents of geography in HAKBO was related to world-wide geographical information and intended to instil patriotism into the hearts of people. As their research methods, they adopted systematic geographical method by comparing between region and region, or studying relationships of the nature and human, and Hettner's regional geographical method which describes human after the nature. Hence, it is proved that the educated's geography in HAKBO introduced modem geography in western society for Patriotic Enlightenment and it used its geographical methods.

In this article, major research trends are examined mainly from articles published in Journal of the Korean Geography, academic society journals of sub-fields in geography and Ph.D. dissertations in geography of universities in Korea. Based on the research trends up to current point, issues and research directions in order to raise the status of Korean Geography in the twenty first century are prospected. Sixty years of Korean Geography can be divided into 4 periods such as before 1970s, during the 1980s, during the 1990s, and the period after the 2001. Each period of time revealed distinct aspects of development both quantitatively and qualitatively. For the last 60 years, the study of Korean Geography has gone through enormous changes in the number of articles with dynamics and variety in contents and methodology, breathing with the changes of the Korean society. Experiencing urbanization and industrialization along with rapid economical growth, the study of Korean Geography has progressed by analyzing the issues and problems of national space and conducting various researches from the case studies for problem-solving to the theoretical and policy oriented studies. The key-words such as 'knowledge based information society', 'aged society', and 'the era of globalization' will be realized in the twenty flit century. And environment-friendly policies for sustainable development will be more stressed in a globalized world. In order to provide research methods and alternatives suitable for newly transformed global society and for utilizing the essence of Geography in the future, the studies on Korean Geography should actively focus on integrative studies between physical and human geography, on interdisciplinary studies, on regional studies related to foreign countries and North Korea, and on the establishment of Korean geographical theory and model.

The critical point in this research is that the research on the phenomenon "teaching geography" should include how various elements consisting of the phenomenon are interrelated with each other in diverse angles, not deal with only teaching methods. This research focused on the relationships of the three components of teaching geography : contents of geography subject matter; learner; and scaffolding. Firstly, the characteristics of contents of geography subject matter were analyzed. Geographical knowledge was classified into four categories based on the way of perception. And then the selected geographic contents for this study were done didactic transposition into materials for geography education. These can be presented in a specific classification system from a context of geography education. Secondly, four categories of learning styles were divided by the way learners perceive and process information : Diverger; Assimilator; Converger; Accommodator. Each was connected with learner′s preferred contents of geography subject matter. The correlation between divergers and typical CulturalㆍHistorical Geography and Environmental Geography was high. So was between assimilators and typical Physical Geography and UrbanㆍEconomic Geography. Learners of Converger style tend to prefer GIS and Cartography. Finally, Regional Development and Regional Environmental Problems were highly correlated with accommodators.

This paper deals with the research trend of world geography (excluding geography of Korea) in Korean geographers' academic society through the analysis of the articles published during the last 21 years in three Korean geographical journals(Journal of the Korean Geographical Society, Journal of Korean Association of Regional Geographers, and Journal of Cultural and Historical Geography). The portion of articles concerned with world geography is relatively the lowest during the years 1990-1994, relatively the highest during the years 1995-1999, and rather decreasing during the years 2000-2010. The research areas of the articles concerned with world geography are mostly limited to USA, Japan, China, and Europe. It is not only expected that the more research on world geography should be done by Korean geographers but also that the research areas should be expanded in worldwide areas at this time when Korea is entering an international, global, and multi-cultural society.

This International Geographical Symposium is to comemorate the 50th anniversary of the Korean Geographical Society. The Korean Geographical Society (KGS) which is the headquater of the geogaphical study will be play a main role to promote International Geographical Conference(IGC). And KGS hopes to prepare for the success of IGC and to examine the ability of the Korean Geographical Society for holding IGC in Seoul, in 2000. Above all, we expect to confirm what vision of the spatial structure our geographers have had for the last 50 years and in the position of the Korean Geographical Society, we present various studies on the spatial structure of the Unified Korea and through the discussion of the members we are going to lead our common interest to the key of reunification and motivate this studies more actively. We think that German geographers who have been studying the establishment of the spatial structure before and after the reunification of Germany will help in setting spatial structure of reunified Korea. In the second part of seminar, we will have a lecture on "Geography in the 21st Century; its Perspectives and Contribution". This lecture will prepose the trends of international geographical study and discipline, to Korean geographers and encourage them to realize what position we are in on the level of international geography and intensify their study. In the end of twentieth centuries, Korean geographers, who accessto postmodernism, hope to develope the unique subject matter and discipline regrardless of the 50 year-partition of the Korean Peninsula through the study of geobraphy. What can we suagest to geographers under the unique spatia1 structure of the divided peninsula\ulcorner How will our country develope in the future when DMZ, the last remains of cold war, vanishes and our reunified country becomes\ulcorner These subject matters will be issued in this International Geographic Conference. These issued subject matters and procedures of discussion will stimulate younger students to have interest in our unique geographic environment and to set up thier own method of study. In the third part of seminar, a special lecture on "Half-century of Korean Geography: It's Reflection and Perspective", the product and the subject of each part in geography will be discussed. Because this seminar is for the first time in 20 years after the 30th anniversary, the evaluation and the comment of each field in geography will be focused on because the achievement of each member's study is evaluted and refered to objectively. The newly developed field ewll be proposed, as well as the evaluation and the result of the Korean Geographical Society. The criticism and the proposal of the Korean Geographical Society will encourage the study of each member. And it will contribute to the development of the Korean Geographical Society. We hope all the issued papers to be published as atreatise and circulated to all members, university liberaries, each institution etc. There is no doubt our research and study will affect geographers and geography teachers to use this treatise. If possible, we will make public editions to distribute widely for students who study geography. It will help students to study geography encouragingly and to understand a correct structure and to commit themselves to promote the developed industrial country when they are playing a leading part in society. And we will contribute this issue to all the institutes such as the congress, each department of government, the political parties, the economic circles and private institutes, in order to make them understand our academic efforts and activities. Besides, we hope this contribution will give them much understanding and interest about 2000 IGC in Seoul beforehand.in Seoul beforehand.
