Seismic behavior of structures isolated with a hybrid system of rubber bearings

  • The enlargement of interest in base isolators as an earthquake-proof design strategy has dramatically accelerated experimental studies of elastomeric bearings worldwide. In this paper, a new base isolator concept that is a hybrid system of rubber bearings is proposed. Uniaxial, biaxial, and triaxial shaking table tests are also performed to study the seismic behavior of a 0.4-scale three-story isolated steel structure in the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering in Taiwan. Experimental results demonstrate that structures with a hybrid system of rubber bearings composed of stirruped rubber bearings and laminated rubber bearings can actually decrease the seismic responses of the superstructure. It has been proved through the shaking table tests that the proposed hybrid system of rubber bearings is a very promising tool to enhance the seismic resistance of structures. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the proposed analytical model in this paper can predict the mechanical behavior of the hybrid system of rubber bearings and seismic responses of the base-isolated structures.

Dynamic Characteristics of Indeterminate Rotor Systems with Angular Contact Ball Bearings Subject to Axial and Radial Loads

  • This paper presents the dynamic analysis of indeterminate rotor systems with angular contact ball bearings subject to axial and radial loads. The reaction forces against applied radial loads significantly influence the dynamic characteristics of angular contact ball bearings. However, the reaction forces are hard to determine in the case of indeterminate rotor-bearing systems. To this end, this paper proposes a finite element model for indeterminate rotor systems with angular contact ball bearings. An improved bearing model is adopted which is originated from the Harris's bearing dynamic model. The bearing model is also extended to include centrifugal forces due to the ball and inner ring. This paper utilizes a new iterative algorithm for general, indeterminate rotor systems with angular contact ball bearings. This examples are provided to illustrate the dynamic characteristics of rotor systems with angular contact ball bearings subject to axial and radial loads. The experimental and numerical results prove that the proposed method is useful for the dynamic analysis of indeterminate rotor systems with angular contact ball bearings.

자전거 허브 베어링의 구조적 내구성 해석에 관한 연구 (Structural Durability Analysis of Bike Hub Bearing)

  • As riders do not sense damage to hub bearings due to the friction that occurs while riding, unexpected accidents can happen. Hub bearings can also be broken by cracks due to minor impact. Therefore, the vibration analysis of bike hub bearings is thought to be important. Two bike hub bearings were modelled in this study. The bolts at both ends of the bearings were fixed. The standard weight of a Korean man was assumed to be 70Kg, and a force of 700N was applied. As a result of this study, maximum deformations occurred in bolts at both ends of the central axis. Regarding displacement due to natural frequencies, Model 2 had less deformation than Model 1. Using the results of this study, the structural safety of the design of hub bearings can be estimated, and design plans for durable hub bearings can be suggested.

진공예압형 다공질 공기베어링의 압력분포 및 성능해석 (Analysis on the Static Performance of Vacuum-Preloaded Porous Air Bearings)

  • Air bearings are widely used in precision stages because of low friction and high motion accuracy, however, they suffer from low stiffness in comparison with rolling bearings or hydrostatic bearings. So, several preloading methods using weight, magnet and vacuum force, and opposing pads have been used to increase the stiffness of the air bearings. In this paper, pressure distributions of the vacuum preloaded porous air bearings are calculated using the proposed method. And then, the load capacity and stiffness are analyzed. For the vacuum preloaded air bearings, the stiffness is increased owing to reduced bearing clearance by vacuum force. The simulation results indicate that variation of vacuum pressure with clearance in the vacuum pocket gives rise to low stiffness, so the vacuum pocket should be designed for pressure to be constantly maintained regardless of the bearing clearance by means of large effective pumping speed.

교량구조물의 받침 교체 효과 (The Effects on Structures caused by the Replacement of Bridge Bearing)

  • The effects on structures caused by the replacement of the bridge bearings are investigated in this study. The bearings of the bridge are seriously deteriorated because of the breakage of lower concrete and the corrosion of the bearing itself. Also, the negative reaction states are created at some bearings on the abutment. Then, the bridge has occurred excessive vibrations and severe noise and impact whenever heavy trucks pass the above joints. The existing bearings are replaced using the adjustable bearing. The height of the bearings is adjusted to minimize the level difference of above joint and also to induce the appropriate distribution of live loads The effects of replacing the bearings are investigated by measuring the behaviors of the bridge without and with replacing works. The results without replacing the bearing show that the distribution of displacements and stresses is distorted in comparison with the analytical results. Also the bridge without replacing the bearing shows that the impact and vibration from the heavy trucks are larger than those with replacing the bearing. Load carrying capacity of the bridge increase about 1.8 times through replacing the bearing. The above results show that the structural performance of the bridge is improved by replacing only bridge bearings.

고온초전도베어링의 회전체역학적 특성 (Rotordynamic Performance of High-Tc superconductor Bearings)

  • The dymanic properties of the high-Tc superconductor journal bearings used in the KEPRI flywheel energy storage system was experimentally estimated by using the imbalance excitation method. The test reveals that the superconductor bearings have very low stiffness compared to that of typical oil film bearings with similar geometry and almost the same amount of damping as in roller bearings, which may not be helpful for the system to pass through the critical speeds. However, it was found out that the cross-coupled stiffness and damping terms were almost negligible so that the system could be more stable than the one using lil film bearings. Also with proper design of the rotor-bearing system and accurate balancing of the rotor, the high-Tc superconductor bearing is one of the most viable alternatives to the conventional ones due to its oil-free, non-contact running capability in a vacuum environment, which is literally essential for highly efficient flywheel energy storage systems.

RTS test study and numerical simulation of mechanical properties of HDR bearings

  • High Damping Rubber bearings (HDR bearings) have been used in the seismic design of bridge structures widely in China. In earthquakes, structural natural periods will be extended, seismic energy will be dissipated by this kind of bearing. Previously, cyclic loading method was used mainly for test studies on mechanical properties of HDR bearings, which cannot simulate real seismic responses. In this paper, Real-Time Substructure (RTS) test study on mechanical properties of HDR bearings was conducted and it was found that the loading rate effect was not negligible. Then the influence of peak acceleration of ground motion was studied. At last test results were compared with a numerical simulation in the OpenSees software framework with the Kikuchi model. It is found that the Kikuchi model can simulate real mechanical properties of HDR bearings in earthquakes accurately.

  • Experimental work undertaken to investigate the behaviour of lead-rubber bearings under compression and a combination of compression and shear or rotation has been reported on elsewhere. However, it is difficult to determine the state of stress within the bearings in terms of the applied forces and the interaction between the lead plug and the steel shims and elastomeric layers. In order to supply some of the missing information about the stress-strain state within the bearings, an analytical study using the finite element method was carried out. The available experimental results were used to validate the model and although agreement was not as good as expected (on account of difficulties in modelling the lead plug), the analyses did provide some information about the state of the stress within the bearing.

교량받침 형식에 따른 판형교 동적 분석 (Analysis of dynamic behavior of Railroad Steel Bridges According to Bridge Bearing Types)

  • 철도 판형교의 선받침, 스페리칼받침 및 디스크받침의 차량주행에 의한 동적 거동을 측정 분석 하고, 각 받침에 따른 판형교의 동적 거동을 분석하였다. 이를 위해 각 받침은 고정단과 가동단의 형태에 따라 차량주행에 의한 수직변위가 측정되었고, 비교 분석하였다. 또한, 가동단의 스페리칼받침과 디스크받침의 내부에 설치된 PTFE판의 변형 및 이 변형이 교량의 거동에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 판형교에 설치된 교량받침에서 들림 현상이 관측되는데, 받침 형태에 따른 들림량을 분석하였다. 중앙 거더의 수직변위를 교량받침 별로 비교하여 교량받침 교체에 의한 교량 수직변위 변화를 분석하였으며, 각 받침에 따른 중앙 거더의 수직변위와 고유진동수의 변화를 상관적으로 분석하여 설명하였다.

  • Systems with journal bearings generally operate in large scale and under severe loading conditions such as steam generator turbines and internal combustion engines, in contrast to the machineries using rolling element bearings. Failure of the bearings in these machineries can result in the system breakdown. To avoid the time consuming repair and considerable economic loss, the detection of incipient failure in journal bearings becomes very important. In this experimental approach, acoustic emission monitoring is employed to the detection of incipient failure caused by intervention of foreign particles most probable in the journal bearing systems. It has been known that the intervention of foreign materials, insufficient lubrication and misassembly etc. are principal factors to cause bearing failure and distress. The experiment was conducted under such designed conditions as inserting alumina particles to the lubrication layer in the simulated journal bearing system. The results showed that acoustic emission could be an effective tool to detect the incipient failure in journal bearings.
