This paper aims to design a variable-stiffness type economical safety joint for service robots. The safety joint was designed to have a passive shock absorbing mechanism for protecting human from a catastrophic collision under service condition of robots. A simple mechanism composed of two action disks for switching the load transfer, a spring and a screw for pre-load was proposed. In order to evaluate the performance of the safety joint a testing platform which can carry out the static and impact tests was also designed and fabricated. From the test results, the designed safety joint was proved to have a variable load-carrying capacity and about 42% impact absorption capacity with simple manipulation of the control screw.
Although MR imaging is generally applicable to depict knee joint deterioration it, is sometimes occurred to mis-read and mis-diagnose the common knee joint diseases. In this study, we employed magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) method to improve the diagnosis of the various knee joint diseases. Spin-echo (SE) T2-weighted images (TR/TE 3,400-3,500/90-100 ms) were obtained in seven cases of knee joint deterioration, FSE T2-weighted images (TR/TE 4,500-5,000/100-108 ms) were obtained in seven cases of knee joint deterioration, gradient-echo (GRE) T2-weighted images (TR/TE 9/4.56/$50^{\circ}$ flip angle, NEX 1) were obtained in 3 cases of knee joint deterioration, In six cases of knee joint deterioration, fat suppression was performed using a T2-weighted short T1/tau inverse recovery (STIR) sequence (TR/TE =2,894-3,215 ms/70 ms, NEX 3, ETL 9). Calculation of MTR for individual pixels was performed on registration of unsaturated and saturated images. After processing to make MTR images, the images were displayed in gray color. For improving diagnosis, three-dimensional isotropic volume images, the MR tristimulus color mapping and the MTR map was employed. MTR images showed diagnostic images quality to assess the patients' pathologies. The intensity difference between MTR images and conventional MRI was seen on the color bar. The profile graph on MTR imaging effect showed a quantitative measure of the relative decrease in signal intensity due to the MT pulse. To diagnose the pathologies of the knee joint, the profile graph data was shown on the image as a small cross. The present study indicated that MTR images in the knee joint were feasible. Investigation of physical change on MTR imaging enables to provide us more insight in the physical and technical basis of MTR imaging. MTR images could be useful for rapid assessment of diseases that we examine unambiguous contrast in MT images of knee disorder patients.

A new jointing method using steel cramps with a unique configuration was developed for the field joint of precast deck slabs of highway bridges. In this jointing method, the looped distribution bars are connected by the cramps to the main reinforcements. Therefore, the joint can transfer the bending moment and shearing force through the interlocking effect caused by the cramps, and it is both excellent in installation on-site and economical compared with the loop joint currently in use. In order to confirm the bending and shear capacities and to clarify the failure mechanism of the joint, a series of static loading tests were carried out. From the results of these experimental studies, it was clarified that the cramp joint has enough load carrying capacity being equivalent to the loop joint.

Purpose: The purpose of our study was to compare treatment results of two different surgical techniques for chronic acromioclavicular joint dislocations. Materials and Methods: Fifty consecutive patients diagnosed as chronic acromioclavicular joint dislocations between January 1997 and June 2009 were included in the study. Patients were randomized into two different groups. Patients in the first group (n=20) were treated using a modified Weaver and Dunn method using a simple coracoacromial ligament transfer method. Patients in the other group (n=30) were treated with acromial bone-block transfer containing coracoacromial ligament. Mean follow-up times for the two groups were 13.1 and 14.9 months, respectively. Results: At 1 year postoperatively, mean coracoclavicular distance, the VAS score and the ASES score for the Weaver-Dunn method group; for the bone block transfer method group were 3.8 mm (-3 to 6 mm), 3.5 (1.0 to 7.0) and 91.1 (81.66 to 95); 3 mm (-2 to 6 mm), 4.2 (1.0 to 7.5) and 79.6 (31.66 to 95). There were no significant differences in radiologic (p=0.377) and functional (p=0.093) results between the two groups. Failures in the former and latter group were, respectively, two and one. Conclusion: The bone block transfer method shows a tendency to maintain coracoclavicular distance and appeared to yield similar results as the modified Weaver Dunn method.
A relation between the movement range of arms and arising moment has been studied to find out efficient movement range to minimize impact concerning arm landing in sports aerobics. Four male athletes who won top three in national-level sports aerobics competition were chosen for the experiment. They were allowed to jump in between two force platform so that the right hand and the right leg could land onto the front and rear force platform, respectively. The sampling frequency was 200 Hz. The main conclusions based on the analysis of the angle and joint moment parameters of wrist, elbow, and shoulder are as follows: 1. The wrist moment was small when its angle was small, indicating that the dorsi-flexion of the wrist joint offered a positive influence to reduce wrist moment. 2. The elbow angle increased as wrist angle decreased and vice versa. This means that the movement range of the wrist joint affects that of the elbow joint. The darsi-flexion of the wrist is the position to absorb the impact of the elbow effectively rather than to absorb the impact of the wrist itself. The impact is absorbed by the flexion of wrist joint rather than the wrist. 3. The degree of moment transfer of the shoulder joint, having absorbed the impact from the elbow and elbow joint, became dependent on the efficiency of the fore-joints impact absorption.
Joints in jointed concrete Pavement are designed to control against randomly occurred cracks within slabs, which may be caused by temperature or moisture variation. The advantage of these artificial cracks (joints) over naturally occurred cracks are easy access of protections, such as installation of joint seal and load transfer mechanism. The potential benefits of joint seals are to prevent infiltration of surface water through the joint into underlying soil and intrusion of incompressible materials (debris, fine size aggregate) in to the joint, which may prevent weakening of underlying soils and spallings due to excessive compressive stress, respectively. For the adequate design of joint seal, horizontal variation of joint widths (horizontal joint movements) are essential inputs. Based on long-term in-situ joint movement data of sixteen jointed concrete pavement sections in Long Term Performance Pavement Seasonal Monitoring Program (LTPP SMP), it was indicated that considerable Portion of joints showed no horizontal movements with change in temperature. This Phenomenon is called 'Joint Freezing'. Possible cause for joint freezing is that designed penetrated cracks do not occur at a joint. In this study, a model for the prediction of the ratio of freezing joints in a particular pavement sections is proposed. In addition, possible effects of joint freezing against pavement performance are addressed.
The force transfer mechanism in positive moment continuity details for prestressed concrete girder bridges is investigated in this paper using a three-dimensional detailed finite element model. Positive moment reinforcement in the form of hairpin bars as recommended by the National Cooperative Highway Research Program Report No 519 is incorporated in the model. The cold construction joint that develops at the interface between girder ends and continuity diaphragms is also simulated via contact elements. The model is then subjected to the positive moment and corresponding shear forces that would develop over the service life of the bridge. The stress distribution in the continuity diaphragm and the axial force distribution in the hairpin bars are presented. It was found that due to the asymmetric configuration of the hairpin bars, asymmetric stress distribution develops at the continuity diaphragm, which can be exacerbated by other asymmetric factors such as skewed bridge configurations. It was also observed that when the joint is subjected to a positive moment, the tensile force is transferred from the girder end to the continuity diaphragm only through the hairpin bars due to the lack of contact between the both members at the construction joint. As a result, the stress distribution at girder ends was found to be concentrated around the hairpin bars influence area, rather than be resisted by the entire girder composite section. Finally, the results are used to develop an approach for estimating the cracking moment capacity at girder ends based on a proposed effective moment of inertia.
This paper investigates the seismic performance of T-shaped PC walls with a new vertical connections and wet cast joint. The load-displacement relationship, strength, ductility, failure mechanism, and deformation capacity of the T-shaped PC walls subjected to cyclic loading are verified. Test parameter is diagonal reinforcement of both flange and web wall panels to transfer shear strength. The longitudinal reinforcing steel bars placed edges of walls yield first and the ultimate deformation is terminated due to premature failure of connections. And diagonal reinforcements for shear transfer in walls are effective to restrain the wall crack. The strength and displacement obtained by the cross section analysis were very similar to the experimental data.
A series of tests on simple-welded plate specimens (SWPS) and T-stub tension specimens simulating some of the joint details in moment frame connections were conducted in this investigation. The effects of weld strength mismatch and weld metal toughness on structural behavior of these specimens were considered under both static and dynamic loading conditions. Finite element analyses were performed by taking into account typical weld residual stress distributions and weld metal strength mismatch conditions to facilitate the interpretation of the test results. The major findings are as follows: (a) Sufficient specimen size requirements are essential in simulating both load transfer and constraint conditions that are relevant to moment frame connections, (b) Weld residual stresses can significantly elevate stress triaxiality in addition to structural constraint effects, both of which can significantly reduce the plastic deformation capacity in moment frame connections, (c) Based on the test results, dynamic loading within a loading rate of 0.02 in/in/sec, as used in this study, premature brittle fractures were not seen, although a significant elevation of the yield strength can be clearly observed. However, brittle fracture features can be clearly identified in T-stub specimens in which severe constraint effects (stress triaxiality) are considered as the primary cause, (d) Based on both the test and FEA results, T-stub specimens provide a reasonable representation of the joint conditions in moment frame connections in simulating both complex load transfer mode and constraint conditions.
