  • This study aims to provide joint angles of comfort for females, based on the psychophysical scaling method. Ten female subjects participated in the experiment for measuring perceived discomfort for varying joint motions. The subjects were instructed to maintain given joint motions for a minute, and to rate their perceived discomfort for the motions during a minute's rest by using the free modulus method of the magnitude estimation. Joint angles of comfort were calculated from the regression equations based on the experimental results, in which levels of joint motions were used as independent variables and perceived discomforts as dependent variables. The results showed that joint angles of comfort for the joint motions investigated were much smaller than full range of motions for corresponding joint motions. The ratios of joint angle of comfort to its range motion for the hip were found to be smallest of all joint motions dealt with in this study, and those for the neck were the largest. In addition, comfortable joint angles for females were much smaller than those for males. It is recommended that when designing or evaluating workplaces ergonomically, different comfortable joint angles should be applied according to workers' or population's gender.

  • In assessing risks related to working posture, pictures of postures are taken from various directions, which can be a source of observation error. Joint postures of the neck, lower back, knee, shoulder, and elbow were taken from 7 different viewing angles and 19 observers estimated joint angles by observing the pictures in 2-dimensional display. The joint angles were also measured using an optoelectronic motion measurement system. The estimation error increased as the viewing angle varies from the right side of the human body, but the patterns differ according to which joint angles were being observed. Guidelines to increase the validity of observation of joint angles were presented based on the results. In general, it is recommended to maintain the viewing angle within 20 degrees from the right side of the human body, while different ranges of viewing angle are recommended for each joint angle.

  • This study, which is conducted on two groups of skilled people and unskilled people, is purposed to analyze joint angle of lower extremity during short track speed skating in order to find out efficient body position and propose ideal training method. Short Track Speed Skating has a wide range of research areas, but their findings indicate a promising area for further research. Targeting 8 people who are skilled in short track speed skating and 8 people who are not skilled in it, this study analyzes three dimensional images using super-high speed camera to compare differences between these two groups of people. In this study, 6 sections of body positions including right foot push-off, right foot recovery, right foot basic position, left foot push-off, left foot recovery, and left foot basic position were analyzed using 8 super-high speed cameras of VICON. These body positions were analyzed in order to find out joint angles of the hip joint, the knee joint, and the ankle joint. In the section 4 of the inner and outer parts of the left hip angles showed significant difference, and most of the sections of knee joint angles also showed significant difference. In the section 1 and 2 of the plantar flexion, dorsiflexion of ankle joints showed significant difference(p<.001) It was found out that there were differences between groups of skilled people and unskilled people in terms of lower extremity's joint angles such as angles of the hip joint, the knee joint, and the ankle joint.

  • Purpose : This study was intended to compare muscle activity in relation to knee joint angles on closed kinetic chain. Methods : A total of 13 subjects consisting of 5 adult males and 8 adult females were made to make movements maintaining knee joint angles at $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ on closed kinetic chain and the muscle activity occurring in their vastus medialis, rectus femoris and vastus lateralis was measured. Statistical data were analyzed using oneway ANOVA. Results : On closed kinetic chain, the muscle activity of the vastus medialis, rectus femoris and vastus lateralis increased the most at $90^{\circ}$ among the knee joint angles with statistically significant differences(p<0.05). Conclusion : On closed kinetic chain, it could be seen that as the angle of the knee joint increased, the muscle activity increased.

  • Purpose : The purpose of present study is to evaluate the joint angles of legs in the standing posture for six patients with unilateral knee osteoarthritis. Methods : The participants underwent unilateral total knee replacement. A motion analysis was used to measure the joint angles of the hip, knee, and ankle. The measurements were taken before the surgery, one week and two weeks after the surgery. Both sides of the legs were evaluated. Results : This result showed that after a certain healing period, both hip joint angles showed a significant difference while there was no significant difference in the knee and ankle joint angles. After surgery, the angle of ankle dorsiflexion was smaller on the operated side than the opposite side compared to the pre-surgery measurements. Conclusion : After surgery, the asymmetry in a standing position left unchanged due to contracture of the knee joint and tightness in the hamstring muscle. Therefore, when physiotherapists plan an initial exercise programs for TKR patients, it is essential to apply adequate exercises which consider the contracture of the leg joints.

  • The purpose of this study was to establish normal values for the thoracic limb joint reference angles in Shih Tzu dogs and to describe the standardized CT methodology for measuring the joint reference angle of the humerus. Five pairs of thoracic limbs of Shih Tzu dogs were collected for the CT scans in this study. Three blinded observers measured the joint reference angle of the humerus and radius for each dog by using CT scans in the frontal, sagittal, and axial planes. The means (± SDs) for the average of the right and left humeral joint reference angles were as follows: mMPHA, 83.74 ± 3.95°; mLDHA, 85.04 ± 2.57°; mCaPHA, 46.75 ± 2.20°; mCrDHA, 79.47 ± 1.97°; and HTA, 19.16 ± 2.38°. Means (± SD) for the average of right and left of the radial joint reference angles were as follows: aMPRA, 85.04 ± 1.58°; aLDRA, 87.59 ± 1.37°; aCrPRA, 84.60 ± 1.46°; aCdDRA, 84.27 ± 1.79°; and RTA, 20.91 ± 3.00°. The intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) of the joint reference angles for the inter- and intraobserver reliability were good to excellent, except those for the mCrHA and HTA were moderate. Our results suggest that the method of measuring joint reference angles of other long bones by using CT can be applied to thoracic limbs and can extract valid values for one specific breed.

  • In this paper, the driver seat comfort of eight automobiles was studied. The joint angles and anthropometric data of eleven subjects sitting on the seating buck were investigated using the instrument devices such as scale, goniometer, vernier calipers, protractor, Martin set. The joint angles of the most comfort posture were found by experiment and compared with previous studies. The anthropometric data of Korean(1992 year surveys) and American(1970∼1974 year) were applied to evaluate the driver seat layout of Korean automobile. The joint angles of the most comfort posture for eleven subjects were obtained with experimental results. The joint angles were agreed with reference angles. The driver seat layout was not suited to seat length and acceleratorseatpan forward distance in 5 percentiles female, pedal separation and seatpan-roof height in 95 percentiles male. Korean automobiles were not suited to seatpan length and steering wheelseatpan clearance, floor-roof height for American 95 percentiles male. The driver anthropometric dimensions were more suitable to middle size than small size automobiles.

  • This study was designed to investigate the effects of an ankle foot orthosis(AFO) with variable ankle joint angles on balance performance in healthy adults. Eighteen healthy adults were recruited in this repeated measures design with subjects as their own controls. An AFO with four kinds of ankle joint angles(-5, 0, 5, and 10 degree) were used and balance performance was measured during single limb standing. Three trials were obtained and then averaged for data analysis. Foot pressure was measured using an F-scan system and muscle activity was measured using an MP150 system. There were significant differences in balance performance with ankle joint angles. An AFO with -5 degrees was associated with significant increases in postural sway(anterior-posterior), and in muscle activity for the medial gastrocnemius and tibialis anterior compared with other degrees of angle. Findings of this study show that angles of an AFO are related to balance performance and a joint angle of 10 degree is effective for promoting joint stability and postural control. This information can be used by clinicians to prescribe AFOs.
