The reliability of leaded and lead-free solders of BGA type packages on a printed circuit board was investigated by employing the standard drop test and 4-point bending test. Tested solder joints were examined by optical microscopy to identify associated failure mode. Three-dimensional finite element analysis(FEM) with ANSYS Workbench v.11 was carried out to understand the mechanical behavior of solder joints under the influence of bending or drop impact. The results of numerical analysis are in good agreement with those obtained by experiments. Packages in the center of the PCB experienced higher stress than those in the perimeter of the PCB. The solder joints located in the outermost comer of the package suffered from higher stress than those located in center region. In both drop and bending impact tests, the lead-free solder showed better performances than the leaded solders. The numerical analysis results indicated that stress and strain behavior of solder joint were dependent on various effective parameters.

Recently, use of the precast concrete (PC) system, which can increase economy by minimizing field work, has rapidly increased. However, the PC system cannot exhibit structural performance under construction, specifically before integration between members. Furthermore, since it is difficult to secure the structural integrity of beam-column joints even after construction, the PC system is vulnerable to progressive collapse. In the PC system, various types of details for PC beam-column joints have been proposed, while the structural/construction details of PC system generally used in Korea differ from those of overseas PC systems. However, studies on the progressive collapse of the domestic PC system are limited. Thus, in this study, we investigated the structural/construction details of PC beam-column joints mainly used in Korea. Based on the investigation, for the prototype PC system with typical joint details, a nonlinear finite element analysis was carried out to evaluate its structural performance under progressive collapse. Further, a parametric study was performed, and the effect of the design parameters was investigated, to recommend a method to improve the progressive collapse resistance of the PC system.

Many experimental studies have evaluated the in-plane behavior of reinforced concrete frames in order to understand mechanisms that resist progressive collapse. The effects of transverse beams, frames and slabs often are neglected due to their probable complexities. In the present study, an experimental and numerical assessment is performed to investigate the effects of transverse beams on the collapse behavior of reinforced concrete frames. Tests were undertaken on a 3/10-scale reinforced concrete sub-assemblage, consisting of a double-span beam and two end columns within the frame plane connected to a transverse frame at the middle joint. The specimen was placed under a monotonic vertical load to simulate the progressive collapse of the frame. Alternative load paths, mechanism of formation and development of cracks and major resistance mechanisms were compared with a two-dimensional scaled specimen without a transverse beam. The results demonstrate a general enhancement in resistance mechanisms with a considerable emphasis on the flexural capacity of the transverse beam. Additionally, the role of the transverse beam in restraining the rotation of the middle joint was evident, which in turn leads to more ductile behavior. A macro-model was also developed to further investigate progressive collapse in three dimensions. Along with the validated numerical model, a parametric study was undertaken to investigate the effects of the removed column location and beam section details on the progressive collapse behavior.

Recently, an interest on joint behavior between adjacent concrete slab tracks has increasing due to large application of such track system. Dowel bars are widely used to improve load transfer capacity across the joints. Dowel bars reduce the deflections and stresses by transferring the load between the slabs. This study proposes the lumped shear spring model to efficiently model dowel joints of adjacent slabs. This model includes bearing stiffness between dowel bar and concrete as well as dowel gap. Strength of the proposed spring model is evaluated based on Concrete Capacity Design method under the assumption of shear failure mode in the joints. Experiments are also performed up to failure to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed model. It has been observed that the proposed model is able to predict initial nonlinearity due to dowel gap, and capture material nonlinearity of the test slabs. Thus, it is recommended that the proposed model can be effectively applied to the dowel joints of concrete slab track.

The ball shear test was investigated in terms of the effects of test parameters, i.e., shear height and shear speed, with an experimental and non-linear finite element analysis for evaluating the solder joint integrity of area array packages. Two representative Pb-free solder compositions were examined in this work: Sn-3.5Ag-0.75Cu and In-48Sn. The substrate was a common SMD type with solder bond pad openings of 460 $\mu$m in diameter. The microstructural investigations were carried out using SEM, and the IMCs were identified with EDS. Shear tests were conducted with the two varying test parameters. It could be observed that increasing shear height, at fixed shear speed, has the effect of decreasing shear force for both Sn-3.5Ag-0.75Cu and In-48Sn solder joints, while the shear force increased with increasing shear speed at fixed shear height. Too high shear height could cause some undesirable effects on the test results such as unexpected high standard deviation values or shear tip sliding from the solder ball. The low shear height conditions were favorable for screening the type of brittle interfacial fractures or the degraded layers in the interfaces. The shear speed conditions were discussed with the stress analyses of the solder ball, and we cannot find any conspicuous finding which is related to optimum shear speed from the stress analyses.
The force resisting ability of a connection has direct implications on the overall response of a timber framed structure to various actions, thereby governing the integrity and safety of such constructions. The behavior of timber framed structures has been studied by many researchers by testing full-scale-connections in timber frames so as to establish consistent design provisions on the same. However, much emphasis in this approach has been unidirectional, that has focused on a particular connection configuration, with no research output stressing on the refinement of the existing connection details in order to optimize their performance. In this regard, addition of adhesive to dowelled timber connections is an economically effective technique that has a potential to improve their performance. Therefore, a comparative study to evaluate the performance of various full-scale timber frame Nailed connections (Bridled Tenon, Cross Halved, Dovetail Halved and Mortise Tenon) supplemented by adhesive with respect to Nailed-Only counterparts under tensile loading has been investigated in this paper. The load-deformation values measured have been used to calculate stiffness, load capacity and ductility in both the connection forms (with and without adhesion) which in turn have been compared to other configurations along with the observed failure modes. The observed load capacity of the tested models has also been compared to the design strengths predicted by National Design Specifications (NDS-2018) for timber construction. Additionally, the experimental behavior was validated by developing non-linear finite element models in ABAQUS. All the results showed incorporation of adhesive to be an efficient and an economical technique in significantly enhancing the performance of various timber nailed connections under tensile action. Thus, this research is novel in a sense that it not only explores the tensile behavior of different nailed joint configurations common in timber construction but also stresses on improvising the same in a logical manner hence making it distinctive in its approach.
Generally, joints are the weakest part in the composite structures. Composite joints can be classified into adhesive joints and mechanical joints, and mechanical joints are mainly used in areas less sensitive to environmental conditions. In this paper, the failure loads of composite mechanical joints with five different stacking angles are tested and predicted. Finite element analysis of mechanical joints were performed and failure loads were predicted by the FAI(Failure Area Index) method using Tsai-Wu and Yamada-Sun failure criteria, and the predicted failure loads were compared with experimental results. From the experiment and analysis, the failure loads of the mechanical joints were decreased as the ratio of 0 degree layer was low and they could be predicted within 13.03% using the FAI method and Yamada-Sun failure criteria.

This paper presents a stiffness analysis method for a low-DOF parallel manipulator, which takes into account of elastic deformations of joints and links. A low-DOF parallel manipulator is defined as a spatial parallel manipulator which has less than six degrees of freedom. Differently from the case of a 6-DOF parallel manipulator, the serial chains in a low-DOF parallel manipulator are subject to constraint forces as well as actuation forces. The reaction forces due to actuations and constraints in each limb can be determined by making use of the theory of reciprocal screws. It is shown that the stiffness model of an F-DOF parallel manipulator consists of F springs related to the reciprocal screws of actuations and 6-F springs related to the reciprocal screws of constraints, which connect the moving platform to the fixed base in parallel. The $6{times}6$ stiffness matrix is derived, which is the sum of the stiffness matrices of actuations and constraints. The six spring constants can be precisely determined by modeling the compliance of joints and links in a serial chain as follows; the link can be considered as an Euler beam and the stiffness matrix of rotational or prismatic joint can be modeled as a $6{times}6$ diagonal matrix, where one diagonal element about the rotation axis or along the sliding direction is zero. By summing the elastic deformations in joints and links, the compliance matrix of a serial chain is obtained. Finally, applying the reciprocal screws to the compliance matrix of a serial chain, the compliance values of springs can be determined. As an example of explaining the procedure, the stiffness of the Tricept parallel manipulator has been analyzed.
Fiber metal laminates (FMLs) are well known for improved fatigue strength, better impact resistance, superior damage tolerance and slow crack growth rate compared to traditional metallic materials. However, defects and loss of strength of a composite material can occur due to the vertical load from the punch during the joining with a dissimilar material using a conventional clinching method. In the current study, tapered-hole clinching was an alternative process used to join Al 5052 and FMLs. The tapered hole was formed in the FML before the joining. For the better understanding of static and dynamic characteristics, a clinched joining followed by a tensile-shear test was numerically simulated using the finite element analysis. The design parameters were also evaluated for the geometry of the tapered hole by the Taguchi method in order to improve and compare the lateral joining strength of the clinched joint. The influence of the neck thickness and the undercut were evaluated and the contribution of each design parameter was determined. Then, actual experiments for the joining and tensile-shear test were conducted to verify the results of the numerical simulations. In conclusion, the appropriate combination of the design parameters can improve the joining strength and the cross-sections of the tapered-hole clinched joint formed in the actual experiments were in good agreement with the results of the numerical simulations.

Flexure joints are recently used in the ultra-precision mechanism for a telecommunication mirror stage. Flexure joints have several advantages coming from their monolithic characteristics. They can be used to reduce the size of manipulators or to increase the precision of motion. In our research, 6 dof(degree of freedom) mechanism is suggested for micrometer repeatability using a flexure mechanism. To design the 6-dof motion, the 2-dof planar mechanism are designed and assembled to make the 6-dof motion. To achieve a certain performance, it is necessary to define the performance of mechanism that quantifies the characteristics of flexure joints. This paper addresses the analysis and design of the 6-dof parallel manipulator with a flexure joint using a finite element analysis tool. To obtain experimental result, CCD laser displacement sensor is used for the total displacement and the stiffness for the 6-dof flexure mechanism.
