Wargame is a simulated military operation with certain rules, specifications, and procedures, in which soldiers can virtually and indirectly experience the war. The ROK Navy operates the Cheonghae model, a training wargame model for helping commanders and staff master the procedures for conducting the war. It is important for commanders, staff and analysts to know whether a warship can perform its missions and how long it can last during a war. In existing model, the Cheonghae, the probability of kill of a warship is calculated simply considering the number of tonnage without any stochastic elements, and the warship's mission availability is also determined based on predetermined values. With this model, it is difficult to get a value of the probability of kill that makes sense. In this dissertation, the author has developed a probabilistic model in which the warship vulnerability data of ROK-JMEM can be used. A conceptual model and methodology that can evaluate the mission performance of personnel, equipment, and supplies has been proposed. This can be expanded to a comprehensive assessment of wartime warship loss rates by integrating damage rates for personnel, equipment, and supplies in wartime.
This paper deals with the industrial problem of thermal striping damage on the French prototype fast breeder reactor, Phenix and it was studied in coordination with the research program of IAEA. The thermomechanical and fracture mechanics evaluation procedure of thermal striping damage on the tee-junction of the secondary piping using Green's function method and standard FEM is presented. The thermohydraulic(T/H) loading condition used in the present analysis is the random type thermal loads computed by T/H analysis on the turbulent mixing of the two flows with different temperatures. The thermomechanical fatigue damage was evaluated according to ASME code section 111 subsection NH. The results of the fatigue analysis showed that fatigue failure would occur at the welded joint within 90,000 hours of operation. The assessment for the fracture behavior of the welded joint showed that the crack would be initiated at an early stage in the operation. It took 42,698.9 hours for the crack to propagate up to 5 mm along the thickness direction. After then, however, the instability analysis, using tearing modulus, showed that the crack would be arrested, which was in agreement with the actual observation of the crack. An efficient analysis procedure using Green's function approach for the crack propagation problem under random type load was proposed in this study. The analysis results showed good agreement with those of the practical observations.
Fillet welding is widely used in the assembly of ships and offshore structures. The T-joint configuration is frequently reported to experience fatigue damage when a marine structure meets extreme loads such as storm loads. Fatigue damage is affected by the magnitude of residual stresses on the weld. Recently, many shipping registers and design guides have required that the fatigue strength assessment procedure of seagoing structures under wave-induced random loading and storm loading be compensated based on the effect of residual stresses. We propose a computational procedure to analyze the residual stresses in a T-joint. Residual stresses are measured by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method, and a 3-D finite element analysis (FEA) is performed to obtain the residual stress profile in the T-joint. The proposed finite element model is validated by comparing experiments with computational results, and the characteristics of the residual stresses in the T-joint are discussed.

In this study, the variations of transformed impact factors and load carrying capacity of highway bridges measured from the state of expansion joint are evaluated. the field loading tests were performed on the highway bridge with damaged expansion joint to investigate the variation of the load carrying capacity. From the field loading tests in case that damaged expansion joint exist or do not exist, the static displacements and dynamic displacements were measured, and TIF were calculated, respectively. dynamic test is performed in order to estimate dynamic displacement and TIF according to the level of damage of expansion joint. From the results of TIF, the load carrying capacity of highway bridges with damaged expansion joint were estimated.
This paper investigates the impact of local joint flexibility (LJF) on the fatigue life of jacket-type offshore platforms. Four sample platforms with varying geometric properties are modeled and analyzed using the Opensees software. The analysis considers the LJF of tubular joints through the equivalent element and flexible link approaches, and the results are compared to rigid modeling. Initially, modal analysis is conducted to examine the influence of LJF on the frequency content of the structure. Subsequently, fatigue analysis is performed to evaluate the fatigue life of the joints. The comparison of fatigue life reveals that incorporating LJF leads to reduced fatigue damage and a significant increase in the longevity of the joints in the studied platforms. Moreover, as the platform height increases, the effect of LJF on fatigue damage becomes more pronounced. In conclusion, considering LJF in fatigue analysis provides more accurate results compared to conventional methods. Therefore, it is essential to incorporate the effects of LJF in the analysis and design of offshore jacket platforms to ensure their structural integrity and longevity.
Reinforced concrete (RC) beam column joints (BCJ) have mostly exhibited poor seismic performance during several past earthquakes, typically due to the poor-quality concrete or lack of reinforcement detailing typical of pre-code design practice. The present study is motivated towards numerical simulation and seismic fragility assessment of one such RC-BCJ. The BCJ is loaded to failure and strengthened using Ultra High Performance-Hybrid Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHP-HFRC) jacketing. The strengthening is performed for four different BCJ specimens, each representing an intermediate damage state before collapse. viz., slight, moderate, severe, and collapse. From the numerical simulation of all the BCJ specimens, an attempt is made to correlate different modelling and design parameters of the BC joint with respect to the damage states. In addition, seismic fragility analysis of the original as well as the retrofitted damaged BCJ specimens show the relative enhancement achieved in each case.
Fillet welding accounts for about 80% of all constructing process of ship and ocean structure. T-joint is one of the typical shapes which are frequently reported to experience the fatigue damage when the marine structure meets the storm loads. The fatigue damage is affected by the magnitude of residual stresses on the weld. Recently, many shipping registers and design guidances have required that the fatigue strength assessment method should be compensated by the effect of the residual stress in case that the random loading or storm loading is applied to the marine vessels. This study suggests the computational procedure to analyze the residual stresses of T-joint specimen that is frequently reported to get damaged by the storm loading. Experiment by XRD as well as the 3-D computational welding model is presented in order to get the profile of residual stress. Throughout the comparison of experimental result with the computational result, the computational model was validated. Thereafter, characteristics of he residual stresses in the joint are discussed.
In this paper, a numerical methodology for health monitoring of weldment was proposed using finite element method coupled with continuum damage mechanics. The welding-induced residual stress distribution of T-joint weldment was calculated using a commercial finite element package SYSWELD+. The distribution of latent damage was evaluated from the stress and strain components taken as the output of a finite element calculation. Numerical examples were given to demonstrate the usefulness of this so-called "post-processing approach" in the case of welding-induced damage assessment.
Accurately predicting wartime resources requirements and preparing war supplies in peacetime is an important task that can determine the outcome of the war by guaranteeing the duration of the operation. The wartime warship damage rate is a measure of estimating the battle damage of our warships in the process of performing battles to achieve the war goal. In the previously studied wartime warship damage rate estimation method, when damage occurs, long-term repair is required due to the complexity and specificity of the ship structure. Only the case of a complete defeat at the level of sinking was defined as a damage, and even if it was impossible to perform a maritime operation mission, it was not estimated as a damage if the level of sinking was not reached. Therefore, in order to improve the reliability of the wartime warship damage rate, the equipment damage assessment level can be estimated based on the warhead weight of the threat weapon system, the vulnerability rate of the warship's equipment, and the warship's hull. In the future, it is expected that the estimation methodology proposed in this study will be used as a simulation logic when developing a model for analyzing the wartime resources requirements for the warship's equipment and hull.
