  • The distribution and form of pine wood nematode (PWN) were investigated in Jinju-si and Sacheon-si areas, where infested with pine wilt disease (PWD). The average PWN population per g of the tubulation part in the wilted Japanese balck pine were 381.2 and 341 in Jinju-si and Sacheon-si, respectively. The PWN population per g of affected Japanese black pine with wilt rate below 60% were 556 and 518 in Jinju-si and Sacheon-si, respectively. The ratios of PWN and other plant-parasitic nematode in the wilted Japanse black pines were 48% vs. 52% in Jinju-si and 53% vs. 47% in Sacheon-si after exposure to PWD for 1 year. The survivorship of pine wood nematode in the sampled trees after 1 year was 0-10% in the Jinju-si area and 5-20% detected in the Sacheon-si area. In the forest areas affected by PWN, the highest survival rates were 37.2% and 39.8% at 25 cm diameter at breast height (DBH) in Jinju-si and Sacehon-si, respectively, while the highest wilt rates were 30.5% and 28.3% at 30 cm DBH in Jinju-si and Sacehon-si, respectively.

  • Objectives : The objective of this study is to evaluate antioxidant activity of water extracts from steamed Polygonati Rhizoma(PR). Methods : The alcohol steamed PR from Jinju-si, Gyeongsangnam-do and Samcheok-si Gangwon-do are treated for the research into the antioxidant activity of the water extract. The sample was divided into 4 groups that PR without steaming process, PR with once, second and third steaming process. The antioxidant activities of polyphenol, flavonoid, DPPH, SOD, hydroxyl radical and nitrite scavenging activity. Results : The total content of polyphenol was the grow rapidly when the number of steaming adds up. For the third time, both the steamed PR from Jinju-si and the one from Samcheok-si in the water extract indicate the highest content levels measured $50.59\;mg/m{\ell}$ and $37.33\;mg/m{\ell}$ respectively. The more the number of steaming increases, the more rising the content of flavonoid. The steamed PR from Jinju-si and Samcheok-si in the third time are measured $30.03\;mg/m{\ell}$ and $54.9\;mg/m{\ell}$ respectively. DPPH radical scavenging activity of the steamed PR rises high rather than the non-steamed one when the number of steaming increases. As increase steaming time, SOD like activity and hydroxyl radical scavenging ability were increasing too. The steamed PR from Jinju-si in the third time is measured as the highest level 22.4%, 71.90% respectively. As increase steaming time, nitrite scavenging ability was the number was decreased. Conclusions : These results suggest that water extracts from steamed PR, exhibited higher antioxidant activities can be potentially used as proper natural antioxidants.

  • Provenance type and paleoclimate of the Jinju and Iljig formation were studied on the basis of compositions of sandstones from the western Euiseong area in the northern part of Kyong-sang basin. The average compositions of quartz, feldspar and lithic grain(Q:F:L) from the sandstones are 53:40:7 and 50:46:4 for Jinju and Iljig formations, respectively. The values fall into the arkosic arenite field. Petrographic detrital modes of the sandstones mainly suggest transitional continental block for the tectonic setting of the provenance. All sandstones from the Jinju and IIjig formations show chemical compositions close to average values of arkose(Pettijohn, 1975). $Na_2O$ contents is relatively high. $Fe_2O_3$(total iron) and MgO contents decrease with increasing $SiO_2$ contents since the framework grains of arkoses supposed to be derived from granitic rocks are poor in ferromagnesian minerals. The detrital framework grains still possess climatic signs even though the grains were more or less altered during deep burial. Bivariant plot of Suttner and Dutta(1986) suggests semi-arid to semi-humid paleoclimate during the deposition of the Jinju and Iljig sandstones.

  • This paper demonstrates the possible nondestructive analysis of iron artifacts' metallurgical characteristics using neutron imaging. Ancient kingdoms of the Korean Peninsula used a direct smelting process for ore smelting and iron bloom production; however, the use of iron blooms was difficult because of their low strength and purity. For reinforcement, iron ingots were produced through refining and forge welding, which then underwent various processes to create different iron goods. To demonstrate the potential analysis using neutron imaging, while ensuring artifacts' safety, a sand iron ingot (SI-I) produced using ancient traditional iron making techniques and a sand iron knife (SI-K) made of SI-I were selected. SI-I was cut into 9 cm2, whereas the entirety of SI-K was preserved for analysis. SI-I was found to have an average grain size of 3 ㎛, with observed α-Fe (ferrite) and pearlite with a body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice structure. SI-K had a grain size of 1-3 ㎛, α-Ferrite on its backside, and martensite with a body-centered tetragonal (BCT) structure on its blade. Results show that the sample's metallurgical characteristics can be identified through neutron imaging only, without losing any part of the valuable artifacts, indicating applicability to cultural artifacts requiring complete preservation.

  • In this study, we distinguished urban and rural areas in Naju-si, Jeollanam-do, grasped the characteristics of those areas, and investigated the depression-related factors in Naju-si based on this. This study used Community Health Survey data from 2017 to 2019. To investigate the factors affecting the depression in Naju-si local residents, the odds ratio was calculated using a complex sample logistic regression model. As a result of confirming the factors affecting the prevalence of depression in Naju-si residents, the risk of depression was significantly higher at 1.59 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.02-2.50) for women, 2.14 (95% CI, 1.20-3.83) for recipients of basic livelihoods, 2.35 (95% CI, 1.46-3.79) for those who did not practice walking, and 2.00 (95% CI, 1.23-3.26) for those who slept less than 5 hours. It is necessary to select high-risk groups as a regional-specific project to resolve the mental health disparities in Naju-si and to intervene in early depression prevention through support for mental health support services.

  • Heat release analysis is a very importent method in understanding the combustion phenomena inside an engine cylinder. In this study, one-zone heat release analysis was used with the mesured cylinder pressures of an IDI(indirect injection), a HSDI(high speed direct injection) and a SI(spark ignition) engine. It has benefits of simple equation, fast speed, reliability. The object of the study is to compare the combustion characteristics among an IDI, a HSDI and SI engine. Result of analysis, the maximum heat release rate of a HSDI is higher than an IDI because of long ignition delay period. The heat release curve of a IDI is more linear than an HSDI, so the combustion characteristics of a IDI is similiar to that of an SI engine. There is a suggestion here that the combustion efficiency of a HSDI is highest of that of all engines because of the smallest heat transfer loss of all engines.
