The Effect of Swirl on the Blowout Velocities of Partially Premixed Interacting Flames (스월이 부분예혼합 상호작용화염의 화염날림 유속에 미치는 영향)

  • Adding small amounts of air to the fuel is used in many commercial combustors to avoid sooty flame. But partially premixed jet flame has lower blowout velocity, $u_{b.o}$, than nonpremixed one. Increasing blowout limit would be one of the key factors to develope highly intense compact combustion devices. Swirling flow enhances fuel and air mixing and induces a highly turbulent recirculation zone, which helps flame stabilization. It was known that NOx emission decreases with swirl on the proper range of swirl number. And it was shown that the flame interaction in multiple jets also increases $u_{b.o}$ owing to the internal recirculation and reduces NO emission. If the effects of swirl and flame interaction are combined together in partially premixed flame, both $u_{b.o}$ increasement and NOx emission reduction could be achieved. Blowout limits of partially premixed interacting propane flame in the swirling air coflow are investigated experimentally. The results show that the flame is not extinguished up to the experimental limits, 210 m/s, at the swirl number of 0.32 and $X_{F,o}$ = 0.46.

Effects of Combustion Atmosphere Pressure on Non-premixed Counterflow Flame (비예혼합 대향류 화염에서 연소 분위기 압력 영향 연구)

  • The present study is numerically investigated the flame structure of non-premixed counterflow jet flames using the laminar flamelet model Detailed flame structures with the fuel composition of 40% CO, 30% $H_2$. 30% $N_2$ and an oxidizer composition of 79% $N_2$ and 21% $O_2$ in a non-premixed counterflow flame are studied numerically. This study is aimed to investigate the effects of axial velocity gradient and combustion atmosphere pressure on flame structure. The results show that the role of axial velocity gradient on combustion processes is globally opposite to that of combustion atmosphere pressure. That is, chemical nonequilibrium effects become dominant with increasing axial velocity gradient, but are suppressed with increasing ambient pressure. Also, the flame strength is globally weakened by the increase of axial velocity gradient but is augmented by the increase of ambient pressure. However, flame extinction is described better on the basis of only chemical reaction and in this study axial velocity gradient and ambient pressure play a similar role conceptually such that the increase of axial velocity gradient and ambient pressure cause flame not to be extinguished and extend the extinction limit, respectively. Consequently it is suggested that a combustion process like flame extinction is mainly influenced by the competition between the radical formation reaction and the third-body recombination reaction.

A Study on the Flame Configuration and Flame Stability Mechanism with a Nozzle Diameter of Laminar Lifted Jet Flame (층류제트 화염의 노즐직경에 따른 안정화 메커니즘과 화염형상에 관한 연구)

  • Flame stability is the one of the main mechanism of laminar lifted flame and flame propagation velocity becomes a yardstick to measure the flame stability. Bilge has presented the flame propagation velocity of the triple flame and the flame stability mechanism related the flame configuration and mixture fraction. However, there was not able to observe all process of flame ignition and extinction for small nozzle diameter. In this paper, we have subdivided the flame configuration and stability mechanism and classified the flame behavior with a nozzle diameter. Also we have subdivided the 'triple flame propagation opened' and the 'triple flame propagation closed' from the triple flame propagation of triple flame criterion.

  • The subject of turbulent premixed flames has been focused by many researchers for a number of decades. Especially, Borghi suggested a magnificent diagram classifying turbulent combustion areas and Lipatnikov and Chomiak modified this diagram. Recently, experimental techniques have been developed so that we can use PIV for measuring 2D velocity field and apply OH PLIF techniques for obtaining flame locations. In present study, a new diagram is proposed using strain rates and OH signal intensity. Thus, simultaneous PIV and OH PLIF measurements are used for shear strain rates and flame locations, respectively. It is believed that the shear strain rates represent flow characteristics such as turbulence intensity and the OH intensity indicates the flame characteristics such as burning velocities.

The Effect of Particle Size on Ignition Characteristics of Pulverized High-Volatile Bituminous Coal

  • A cylindrical-shape, horizontal furnace was used to investigate the effect of particle size on the pulverized coal combustion behavior. Three differently-sized fractions (5, 30, and 44 microns in average diameter) of high-volatile bituminous coal, were burned in the test furnace. Ignition characteristics of pulverized coal flame were determined through the amount of methane in the carrier gas for the self-sustaining flame. Easiest ignition occurred with the immediately-sized coal particles. Ignition of coal jet flame appeared to occur through a gas-phase homogeneous process for particles larger than 30 microns. Below this limiting size, heterogeneous process probably dominated ignition of coal flame. Oxygen concentration of combustion air was varied up to 50%, to determine the oxygen-enrichment effect on the coal ignition behavior. Oxygen enrichment of primary air assisted ignition behavior of pulverized coal flame. However, enrichment of secondary air didn't produce any effect on the ignition behavior.

  • An axisymmetric laminar jet diffusion flame has been numerically modelled. The present study employs the refined physical submodels to account for the detailed chemical kinetics and the variable transport properties. It is found that preferential diffusion resulting from variable transport properties significantly influences the hydrogen diffusion flame structure in terms of the spatial distribution for temperature, species concentration, thermal and mass diffusivity, Lewis number, and NO concentration. The preferential diffusion effects on the diffusion flame in the high-pressure environment are also discussed in detail.

Characteristics of Laminar Lifted Flame in High Temperature Coflow (고온 동축류에서 층류 화염의 부상특성)

  • Characteristics of laminar lifted flames of propane highly-diluted with nitrogen have been investigated at various temperatures of coflow air. At various fuel mole fractions, the base of laminar lifted flames has the structure of tribrachial (or triple) flame. The liftoff heights are correlated well with the stoichiometric laminar burning velocity considering initial temperature at a given coflow velocity. It shows that lifted flames are stabilized on the basis of the balance mechanism between local flow velocity and the propagation speed of tribrachial flame, regardless of the temperature of coflow and fuel mole fraction. Lifted flames exist for a jet velocity even smaller than the stoichiometric laminar burning velocity, and liftoff velocity increases more rapidly than stoichiometric laminar burning velocity as coflow temperature increases. These can be attributed to the buoyancy effect due to the density difference.

  • The dynamic behaviors of the single vortex in a reacting and non-reacting methane-air jet flow were investigated numerically. The numerical method was based on a predictor-corrector for low Mach number flow A two-step global reaction mechanism was adopted as a combustion model. After fuel and air were developed entirely in computational domain, the single vortex was generated by an axisymmetric jet that was impulsed to emit a cold fuel. Through comparisons of single vortex in reacting and non-reacting jet flow, it was found that global dynamic behaviors and the mechanisms leading to the formation, transport processes of vortex ring were influenced significantly by heat release from reaction. In addition, the interaction between a single vortex and flame bulge generated by buoyance effect in a reacting jet flow was found.

  • 탄소섬유강화플라스틱(CFRP:Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic)용기의 외부에 화재가 발생할 경우 함침된 수지(Resin)가 탄화되면서 자체 강도가 약화되고 충전된 가스가 외부 온도 상승에 따라 압력 상승이 발생하여 용기의 폭발로 이어지는 사고가 발생할 개연성이 높다. 화염 노출조건에서 복합재료 용기의 폭발을 방지하기 위하여 용기용 밸브에 내장된 온도감응식 압력안전장치(TPRD:Thermally activated Pressure Relief Device) 작동 성능을 검증하기 위한 방법으로 화염실험(Bonfire test)를 실시하고 있으나, 개방 공간에서 실시되는 이 실험은 표면 온도 변화가 매우 크게 발생하여 실험에 대한 재현성(Reproducibility)에 의문이 제기되고 있다. 따라서, 표면 온도를 일정하게 유지하기 위한 실험 방법의 개선이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 경유+heptane을 이용한 전체 화염에 노출되는 경우와, 천연가스를 이용한 단일화염에 노출되는 경우의 실험 결과 비교를 통하여 화염 노출 표면 온도를 일정하게 유지하기 위한 가열 방법의 타당성을 검토하였다. 또한, 복합재료 라이너(Liner)의 온도 변화 비교를 통하여 집중화염 노출 조건에서 열전달 특성을 알아보았다.

  • 자동차엔진의 연소과정에 상사하는 밀폐정적연소실을 주연소실과 대향 2개 부연소실로 분할하고 오리피스로 연결하였다. 이때 부연소실로부터 주연소실로 분출하는 대향분출염 연소에 의한 질소산화물 배출저감특성을 연소방식, 연소실형상 그리고 연료종류를 변경한 수종의 실험으로 조사하였다. 질소산화물농도, 연소실 최고압력, 화염전파과정의 고속도슐리렌사진 가시화를 수행한 결과, 대향분출염 연소방식을 도입하연 연소실의 중앙부공간이 상대적으로 넓은 경우에 고부하운전과 동시에 질소산화물의 배출량도 저감할 수 있었다. 그러나 연료의 종류는 질소산화물생성에 매우 영향이 적었다.
