  • Supersonic axisymmetric jets issuing from various kinds of nozzles with a throat diameter of a few millimeters were experimentally investigated. The exit Mach number and Reynolds number based on the throat diameter of nozzle were in the range of 1.0 ~ 5.9 and 8.4$\times$ $10^4$ ~ 2.9$\times$$10^6$, respectively. The nozzle pressure ratio was varied from 5 to 85. Present paper aims to offer fundamental information of the supersonic free-jets, with an emphasis to give data with which the shape of the free-jets can be depicted under a specified condition. Experimental data are summarized to enable an estimation of the shape of the supersonic free-jets. The result shows that the shape of free-jets is dependent on only the nozzle pressure ratio.

  • Aerodynamic characteristics for a launch vehicle are numerically analyzed with various conditions. The local drag coefficients are high at the nose of the launch vehicle in subsonic region and on the main body in supersonic region because of the induced drag and the wave drag, respectively. The drag coefficients show the similar trend with the angle of attack except zero degree. However, the more the angle of attack increases, the more dependent on the Mach number the lift coefficient is. The body rotation for the flight stability destroys the vortex pair formed above the body opposite to the flight direction, so the flow fields are more or less complicated. The drag coefficient of the launch vehicle at sea level is about three times larger than that at altitude 7.2 km. And the thrust jet at the nozzle causes to reduce the drag coefficient compared with the jetless transonic flight.

  • A computation using the mass-averaged implicit Wavier-Stokes equations has been applied to solve the flow fields of the supersonic jets normally injected into supersonic freestreams and several types of turbulence model has been employed to close the governing equations. The ratio of the freestream to injection flow total pressures has been varied to elucidate the major characteristics of the mixing flow of the two streams. The freestream Mach number has been varied to investigate some change in the injection flow field. The results show that the positions of the separation and reattachment, locating upstream and downstream of the injection hole respectively, are strongly dependent on the ratio of total pressures and the freestream Mach number.

  • Research on shock structures of supersonic jet through visualization experiments in low-pressure environment have not been actively conducted. Therefore, in this study, shock waves and supersonic jets were analyzed and compared by numerical analysis and Schlieren technique at low-pressure. Schlieren technique is commonly used to visualize the shock waves generated by density gradient as interferometric methods. Pressure ratio of entrance and ambient was set around 4 to observe moderate under-expanded jet. For validation of experimental and numerical results, the shock structure and frequency were compared. In the case of ST and C nozzle, the results were shown that the difference of shock cell distance was within 10%. The Mach number gradually decreased due to energy reduction, and the error rate was within 7%. D nozzle was not fitted to be observing the shock structure. Because the interface between rarefaction fan and supersonic jet was ambiguous and oscillating phemenoma occurred at end of jet, the supersonic jet in low ambient pressure was observed and analyzed.

  • An experimental study on the micro-supersonic jet flow fields has been carried out. A sonic nozzle of 440 ${\mu}m$-exit diameter and a Laval nozzle of 800 ${\mu}m$ exit diameter with the nozzle exit Mach number 2.0 were fabricated by stretching a micro Pyrex glass tube for the present experiments. Schlieren flow visualization and Pitot pressure distribution of the jet flow field were obtained. Representative characteristics of the jet flow fields such as, supersonic length, jet core length, similarity of the velocity field, and jet spreading rates, have been observed. All the results were compared to previous observations of larger supersonic jets of higher Reynolds numbers, and it was found that overall characteristics of the micro supersonic jet are qualitatively similar as those of the higher Reynolds number jets, except the jet core length and the jet spreading rate.

  • To investigate the generation mechanism of the shock-associated noise, an underexpanded supersonic jet from an axisymmetic nozzle is simulated under the conditions of the Nozzle exit Mach number of 2 and the exit pressure ratio of Pe/Pe =1.5. The present simulation is performed based on the high-order accuracy and high-resolution ENO (Essentially Non-Oscillatory) scheme to capture the time-dependent flow structure representing the sound source. It was found that the shock-associated noise is generated by the weak interaction between the downstream propagating large turbulence structures of the jet flow and the quasi-periodic shock cell structure during the one is passing through the other. The directivity of propagating waves to the upstream is clearly shown in the visualization of pressure field. It is shown that the present calculation of the centerline pressure distribution is in fare agreement with the experimental data at the location of first shock cell.

  • An abrupt increase of duct cross-section is frequently encountered in pressure reducing devices, valves of internal combustion engines and in gas pipelines. Supersonic flow in a rectangular duct passing an abrupt increase of cross-section is studied numerically. The behavior of base pressure of the dead-air region at sudden enlargement of the duct is clarified. This investigation concerns the determination of the base pressure, which is independent of the size of the enlarged part. Several flow patterns are identified with different enlargements according to the ratio between the downstream ambient pressure and the upstream reservoir pressure. Base pressure and the resulting shock-structure are highly depending on the size of duct enlargement. For a given duct, base pressure tends to minimum for a particular pressure ratio. In addition, the locations of secondary separation and reattachment points of the jet plume are found with respect to different duct enlargements.

  • Experimental investigations are performed on the stability and the structure of bluff-body stabilized hydrogen flames. The velocities of coflow air are varied from subsonic to supersonic velocity of Mach 1.8 and OH PLIF images and Schilieren images are used for analysis. Three characteristic flame modes are classified into three regimes with the variation of fuel-air velocity ratio; a jet like flame, a central-jet dominated flame and a recirculation zone flame. Stability curves are drawn to find the blowout regimes and to show that flame stability is improved by increasing the lip thickness of fuel nozzle that works as bluff-body. $Damk{\ddot{o}hler$ number is adopted in order to scale the blowout curves of each flame obtained at different sizes of the bluff-body and all blowout curves are scaled successfully regardless of its bluff-body size.

  • The present study numerically investigates the effect of shield on the flow characteristics of Hartmann whistle. The flow characteristics of un-shielded Hartmann whistle are compared with whistles of different shield heights 15 mm, 17 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm and 30 mm. The comparison of Mach number contours and transient velocity vectors of shielded Hartmann whistles with un-shielded ones for the same conditions reveal that the presence of shield causes the exiting jet to stick to the wall of the shield without causing spill-over around the cavity inlet, thus sustaining the shock oscillation as seen in the unshielded Hartmann whistle, which has intense flow/shock oscillation and spill-over around the cavity mouth. The velocity vectors indicate jet regurgitance in shielded whistles showing inflow and outflow phases like un-shielded ones with different regurgitant phases. The sinusoidal variation of mass flow rate at the cavity inlet in un-shielded Hartmann whistle indicates jet regurgitance as the primary operating mode with large flow diversion around the cavity mouth whereas the non-sinusoidal behavior in shielded ones represent that the jet regurgitance is not the dominant operating mode. Thus, this paper sufficiently demonstrates the effect of shield in modifying the flow/shock oscillations in the vicinity of the cavity mouth.
