Process design in superplastic forming to produce a Nickel-base jet engine disk has been carried out using the rigid-viscoplastic finite element method. This study aims at deriving systematic procedures in forging of superalloy engine disk, and develops a simple scheme to control strainrate within a range of superplastic deformation during the forging operation. The new process, a pancake type preform being used, is designed to have less manufacturing time, and more even distribution of effective strain in the final product, while the conventional superplastic forging of an engine disk has been produced from a cylindrical billet. The jet engine company, Pratt & Whitney, provided the basic information on the manufacturing process of superplastic forging of a jet engine disk.
Astrophysical jets play important roles in many interesting astronomical phenomena, such as star formation, gamma-ray bursts, and active galactic nuclei. The jets are thought to be driven by rotating disks through magneto-centrifugal processes. However, quantitative understanding of the jet-driving mechanism has been difficult because examples showing rotation in both disk and jet are rare. One of the important quantities in the models of jet engine is the size of the jet-launching region. The bipolar jet of the NGC 1333 IRAS 4A2 protostar shows a lateral velocity gradient, which suggests that the SiO jet is rotating around its axis. The jet rotation is consistent with the rotation of the accretion disk. The disk-jet rotation kinematics suggests that the jet-launching region on the disk, or the outflow foot-ring, has a radius of about 2 AU, which supports the disk-wind models.

The one of critical factor in gas turbine engine performance is high turbine inlet gas temperature. Therefore, the turbine rotor has so many problems which must be considered such as the turbine blade cooling, thermal stress of turbine disk due to severe temperature gradient, turbine rotor tip clearance, under the high operating temperature. The purpose of this study is to provider the temperature distribution and heat flux in turbine disk which is required to considered premensioned problem by the Finite Difference Method and the Finite Element Methods on the steady state condition. In this study, the optimum aspect ratio of turbine disk was analysed for various heat conductivity of turbine disk material by Finite Difference Method, and the effect of laminating method with high conductivity materials to disk thickness direction by Finite Element Methods in order to cool the disk. The laminating method with high conductivity material on the side of the disk is effective.

A fluid-solid conjugate solver has been newly developed and applied to an actual engine disk system. Most of the currently available conjugate solvers lack the special thermal modeling for turbomachinery disk system applications. In the present new code, these special models are implemented to expand the applicability of the conjugate method and to reduce the required computational resources. Most of the conjugate analysis work so far are limited to the axisymmetric framework. However, the actual disk system includes several non-axisymmetric components which inevitably affect the local heat transfer phenomena. Also the previous work devoted to this area usually concentrate their efforts on the steady-state thermal field, although the one in the transient condition is more critical to the engine components. This paper presents full 3D conjugate analysis of a single stage high pressure turbine rotor-stator disk system to assess the three-dimensional effects (Fig. 1). The analysis is carried out not only in the steady-state but also in the engine accelerating transient condition. The predicted temperatures shows good agreement with measured data.
In general, flow entrainment of surrounding gas into a supersonic jet is caused by the pressure drop inside the jet and the shear actions between the jet and the surrounding gas. In the recent industrial applications, like supersonic ejector system or scramjet engine, the rapid mixing of two different gases is important in that it determines the whole performance of the flow system. However, the mixing performance of the conventional circular jet is very low because the shear actions are not enough. The supersonic jet discharging from a petal nozzle is known to enhance mixing effects with the surrounding gas because it produces strong longitudinal vortices due to the velocity differences from both the major and minor axes of petal nozzle. This study aims to enhance the mixing performance of the jet with surrounding gas by using the lobed petal nozzle. The jet flows from the petal nozzle are compared with those from the conventional circular nozzle. The petal nozzles employed are 4, 6, and 8 lobed shapes with a design Mach number of 1.7 each, and the circular nozzle has the same design Mach number. The pitot impact pressures are measured in detail to specify the jet flows. For flow visualization, the schlieren optical method is used. The experimental results reveal that the petal nozzle reduces the supersonic length of the supersonic jet, and leads to the improved mixing performance compared with the conventional circular jet.

The characteristics and good corrosion resistance at room and elevated temperatures led to increasing application of Ti-alloys such as aircraft, jet engine, turbine wheels. In forging of Ti-alloy at high temperature, die chilling and die speed should be carefully controlled because the flow stress of Ti-alloy is sensitive to temperature, strain and strain-rate. In this study, the forging of turbine disk was numerically simulated by the finite element method for hot-die forging process and isothermal forging process, respectively. The effects of the temperature changes, the die speed and the friction factor were examined. Also, local variation of process parameters, such as temperature, strain and strain-rate were traced during the simulation. It was shown that the isothermal forging with low friction condition produced defect-free disk under low forging load. Consequently, the simulational information will help industrial workers develope the forging of Ti-alloys including 'preform design' and 'processing condition design'. It is also expected that the simulation method can be used in CAE of near net-shape forging.

The carbon fiber reinforced carbon composite (CFRC) materials are necessary for the advanced industries that require the thermal resistance. And the development and research for CFRC has been in progress in the field of aerospace and defense industry. CFRC have several advantages and special properties such as excellent anti ablation, outstanding strength retention at very high temperature, high heat capacity and thermal transport, high specific stiffness and strength, and high thermal shock resistance. They have been used as aircraft brake, rocket nozzle, nose cones, jet engine turbine wheels, and high speed craft. Since the technology related to CFRC was prohibited from importing and exporting, we developed our own technology to produce F-16 B32 brake disk made out of CFRC, and then we performed various tests to observe the characteristics of CFRC-based brake disk developed in this study in view of density, strength, friction, specific heat, and heat conductivity.
We present results of the VLBA observation toward the radio continuum and water maser emissions in a nearby LINER galaxy NGC 1052. The jet structure observed in 2000 is similar to that in 1998, and the two jet structures in 1998 and 2000 support the sub-luminal motion with apparent velocity of 0.26c. Distribution of water maser spots are located ${\~}$0.05 pc shifted to southwest from the component which is supported to be the nucleus, and no rapid positional change of the water maser gas with respect to the central engine is seen from 1995 to 2000. The maser gas is positionally coincident with a plasma torus, and the position of the maser gas relative to the nucleus is stable from 1995 to 2000. The maser gas in NGC 1052 could be explained to be associated with the nuclear circumnuclear torus or disk like the situation found in the nucleus of NGC 4258.
It is suggested that a flying-by star in a hot accretion disk may cool the hot accretion disk by the Comptonization of the stellar emission. Such a stellar cooling can be observed in the radio frequency regime since synchrotron luminosity depends strongly on the electron temperature of the accretion flow. If a bright star orbiting around the supermassive black hole cools the hot disk, one should expect a quasi-periodic modulation in radio, or even possible an anti-correlation of luminosities in radio and X-rays. Recently, the unprecedentedly accurate infrared imaging of the Sagittarius A$\ast$ for about ten years enables us to resolve stars around it and thus determine orbital parameters of the currently closest star S2. We explore the possibility of using such kind of observation to distinguish two quite different physical models for the central engine of the Sagittarius A$\ast$, that is, a hot accretion disk model and a jet model. We have attempted to estimate the observables using the observed parameters of the star S2. The relative difference in the electron temperature is a few parts of a thousand at the epoch when the star S2 is near at the pericenter. The relative radio luminosity difference with and without the stellar cooling is also small of order $10^{-4}$, particularly even when the star S2 is near at the pericenter. On the basis of our findings we tentatively conclude that even the currently closest pass of the star S2 is insufficiently close enough to meaningfully constrain the nature of the Sagittarius A$\ast$ and distinguish two competing models. This implies that even though Bower et al. (2002)have found no periodic radio flux variations in their data set from 1981 to 1998, which is naturally expected from the presence of a hot disk, a hot disk model cannot be conclusively ruled out. This is simply because the energy bands they have studied are too high to observe the effect of the star S2 even if it indeed interacts with the hot disk. In other words, even if there is a hot accretion disk the star like S2 has imprints in the frequency range at v $\le$ 100 MHz.
Purpose. The intent of this study was to evaluate the effects of curing conditions on self-curing denture base resins to find out proper condition in self-curing resin polymerization. Materials and methods, In this study, 3 commercial self-curing denture base resins are used Vertex SC, Tokuso Rebase and Jet Denture Repair Acrylic. After mixing the self curing resin, it was placed in a stainless steel mold(3$\times$6$\times$60mm). The mold containing the resin was placed under the following conditions: in air at 23$^{\circ}C$; or in water at 23$^{\circ}C$; or in water at 23$^{\circ}C$ under pressure(20psi); or in water at 37$^{\circ}C$ under pressure(20psi) or in water at 50$^{\circ}C$ under pressure(20psi) , or in water at 65$^{\circ}C$ under pressure(20psi), respectively. Also heat-curing denture base resin is polymerized according to manufactures' instructions as control. Fracture toughness was measured by a single edge notched beam(SENB) method. Notch about 3mm deep was carved at the center of the long axis of the specimen using a dental diamond disk driven by a dental micro engine. The flexural test was carried out at a crosshead speed 0.5mm/min and fracture surface were observed under measuring microscope. Results and conclusion . The results obtained were summarized as follows : 1. The fracture toughness value of self-curing denture base resins were relatively lower than that of heat-curing denture base resin. 2. In Vertex SC and Jet Denture Repair Acrylic, higher fracture toughness value was observed in the curing environment with pressure but in Tokuso Rebase, low fracture toughness value was observed but there was no statistical difference. 3. Higher fracture toughness value was observed in the curing environment with water than air but there was no statistical difference. 4. Raising the temperature in water showed the increase of fracture toughness.
