Geoacoustic modeling is used to predict sound transmission through submarine bottom layers of sedimentary strata and acoustic basement. This study reconstructed four geoacoustic models for sediments of 50 m thick at the Jeongdongjin area in the western continental margin of the East Sea. Bottom models were based on the data of the highresolution air-gun seismic and subbottom profiles (SBP) with sediment cores. P-wave speed was measured by the pulse transmission technique, and the resonance frequency of piezoelectric transducers was maintained at 1MHz. Measurements of 42 P-wave speeds and 41 attenuations were fulfilled in three core sediments. For actual modeling, the P-wave speeds of the models were compensated to in situ depth below the sea floor using the Hamilton method. These geoacoustic models of coastal bottom strata will be used for geoacoustic and underwater acoustic experiments reflecting vertical and lateral variability of geoacoustic properties in the Jeongdongjin area of the East Sea.
Paleosol layers lying on top of the terrace in Jeongdongjin area appear to have been deposited under generally well-drained condition with periodic waterlogging. From a 4.5m-long profile observed, a total of 6 stratigraphic units were identified. Grain-size analysis indicates the dominance of silty and clay materials with some portions with high sand content. Major mineralogical elements are quartz, feldspar, mica and chlorite. Geo-chemical composition shows little change throughout the stratigraphy with some fluctuation in chemical weathering index. Marked increase in magnetic susceptibility is recognizable where stratigraphic unit changes. Soil- wedge layer is developed around 50cm below the surface with concentration of grains of AT tephra (c. 25,000 BP). An OSL date of c. 110,000 BP was obtained from a sand layer lying below the paleosol.

Chemical composition of fine sediments from Jeongdongjin area are analyzed with XRF method. The results are compared with previously reported results of sandstones of the nearest Simgok port. The weight percentage of $SiO_2$ of the samples are far lower than those of sandstones of Simgok. It is supposed to be happened by the selective elution of $SiO_2$ from the sediment layer of coastal terrace, as there's no evidence of selective input or precipitation of other elements from outside. As a result of chemical alteration or weathering of sediment at coastal terrace, weight percentage of $Al_2O_3$ and $Fe_2O_3$ of samples show far higher values than those of Simgok sandstone. In addition, the relative portion of $Al_2O_3$ and $Fe_2O_3$ are decreased to upward within outcrop of terrace sediment layers. It could be caused by the chemical weathering progress with time. However Chemical Index of alteration(CIA) of sediment samples are no larger than 90 and it could be interpreted that it would take over 100ka for total weathering of sediment in this area. Meanwhile the ratio of $SiO_2/Al2O_3$ of terrace sediment showed as 3.48~6.0 and it is far smaller than those of Simgok sandstones(23.9~49.0). The ratio of $SiO_2/Fe_2O_3$ of terrace sediment(19.19~55.85) showed similar pattern with $SiO_2/Al2O_3$ (Simgok sanstone: 119.6~601.8). The ratios have a weak trend of decreasing upwards within the outcrop, there also a huge difference in value among the samples. Chemical composition of reddish brown and gray layers which suspected as the result of psudogleization reveals that reddish brown parts have higher concentration of $Fe_2O_3$ than other parts, while there was no significant difference in concentration of $Al_2O_3$ and CaO.

At the upper part of terrace deposits at Jeongdongjin area, there is a structure in which reddish brown and grayish white layers laying horizontally. Previous studies have reported the existence of these structures within the deposits and suggested the theoretical background related to the formation process. However, the analysis of physical properties and chemical composition such as particle size, classification, etc. of the materials constituting the reddish brown and grayish white layers is scarcely done. In this study, the physico - chemical properties of gray - white and reddish brown beds are investigated. The mean grain size of the particles was less than $4{\varphi}$ in both layers and the reddish brown layer was more coarse. The results shows that the sorting of the grayish white layer is better. The chemical composition of both layers shows that the average concentration of $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$ and $K_2O$ of the grayish white layer was higher than those of the reddish brown layer. The concentration of $Fe_2O_3$ of reddish brown lyaer was 3 times higher than those of the grayish white layer. The degree of chemical weathering (CIA) is 90 or so in both the reddish brown and grayish white layers, indicating a significant level of chemical weathering. In conclusion, reddish brown layers had been formed by the processes related to the migration of iron and the migration of water that induced aggregation after the formation of sediments (psudo-gleization). In this study area, a vertical layer of grayish white which cuts off horizontal reddish brown and grayish white color was found. The vertical layer or wedge similar to a ice-wedge or columnar structure that in a cold environment, and there is a difference in shape and size. The vertical layer appears to have occurred three or more cycles. The vertical layers begin to form at a certain height within the outcrop and descend downwards, which of course is difficult to see as directing certain times.
In this paper we identify that there are High Higher surfaces(HH-surface) around Jeongdongjin and Daejin area where Higher surfaces(H-surface) of marine terrace are formed on a large scale. On the basis of an altitude of the ancient shoreline of the marine terraces, geomorphic surfaces can be classified into HH I (140m a.s.l), HH II (110m a.s.l), H I (90m a.s.l), H II (70m a.s.l), M (40m a.s.l), L I (25m a.s.l) and L II (10m a.s.l). Besides, we identify that the lowest surfaces(5~6m a.s.l) are found extensively in the research area which are assumed to be formed in the Holocene. Considering that the formation mechanism of the marine terraces in the research area is similar to that of the marine terraces at both Campo area in the south east coastal region of Korea md the thalassostatic terraces of Osip River in Samchuk in a short distance from the research area, we can assume that the HH-surfaces in both areas were formed in the same period. Based on the fact that L I- surface was formed on the Last Interglacial Stage of MIS 5, we can infer that M- was formed in MIS 7, H I- in MIS 9, H II- in MIS 11, HH I- in MIS 13 and HH II- in MIS 15. The reason for that H-surfaces, similar to those at Gampo area, to remain on a large scale is that the Holsteinian Interglacial continued for a long period of time and at that time there was a large wave-cut platform in the vicinity of the shoreline.

Samples from newly exposed outcrop of sedimentary layers forming Jeongdongjin coastal terrace in Gangreung area are collected and analyzed to find the sedimentary environment. The site are located at the gentle hillslope of the terrace surface area. The height of the outcrop is about 8m and the altitude of it's highest part is 68~73m MSL. The lowest part of this out crop is the partly consolidated sand layer with gravel veneer within it. It is found that this part is not in-situ weathered sand stone through the OSL method. This sand layer is overlain by the gravel layer with sand matrix. The shapes of the gravels from this part are mainly 'platy', 'elongated', and 'bladed' by the index of Sneed and Folk(1958). In addition, mean roundness is not so high. It is sceptical to regard this part as marine sediments which are continuously exposed to erosional processes. The boundary between the lowest sand layer and gravel layer showing the abrupt change in forming material without any mixture or transitional zone, so gravels are seemed to deposited after some degree of consolidation of the lowest sand layer. In addition, the hight of the boundary between layers are changed by the place, so the surface of the partly consolidated sand layer is not flat and has irregularity on topography when it buried by gravels. Main part of this out crop is the poorly sorted coarse gravel(22.4mm) with sand matrix($1.36{\phi}$) layer with at least 2m thick covering the relatively fine gravels discussed above. Over 20% of particles have 'very platy', 'very elongated' and 'very bladed' shape and only less than 5% of particles have 'compact' shape, So this particles are also very hard to be regard as marine gravels which are abraded by marine processes. It can be concluded that this gravel layer formed by fluvial processes rather than coastal processes base on the form of the clast and sedimentary structure. The gravel layer is covered by fine($3{\sim}4{\phi}$) material layers of psudo-gleization which showing inter-bedding of red and white layers. Chemical composition of matrix and other fine materials should be analyzed in further studies. It is attempted to fine the burial ages of the sediment using OSL method, but failed by the saturation. So it can be assumed that these sediments have be buried over 120ka.

This study tried to produce an uplift rate map and reveal the spatial distribution of the rate with topographical characteristics and absolute ages on marine terrace in the East Coast of the Korean Peninsula. Based on a total of 57 ages at 26 sites from previous study and 13 ages at 13 sites from this study, the coast showed the rates ranging from 0.145 m/ka to 0.410m/ka with an average of 0.258 m/ka. The highest and lowest rates were found from the Jeongdongjin area in Gangneung and the Goraebul area in Yeongdeok, respectively. However, some areas in the coast showed large differences in the rate among the sites. In addition, areas with only 1 age were also found, indicative of low reliability. This study suggests that a more reliable and precise interpretation on the rate can be made with more ages identified, especially in Goseong to northern part of Gangneung, middle and southern parts of Samcheok and Yeongdeok, southern part of Pohang to northern part of Gyeongju, and Ulsan.
Background: Cakile edentula (Bigelow) Hook. is a successful invader that has been propagating globally. In Korea, Cakile edentula was found in 2008 for the first time, in the east coast of Korean peninsula. Based on site surveys conducted thereafter, Cakile edentula has propagated in the east coast from Goseong to Jeongdongjin, Gangneung and in the west coast of city of Hwaseong of Gyeonggi-do Province, and Taeangun County of Chungcheongnam-do Province. Results: Cakile edentula has infiltrated into four different vegetation communities (syntaxa) (Calystegio soldanellaeSalsoletum komarovii Ohba, Miyawakiet Tx.1967; Elymo-caricetum Kobomugi Miyawaki 1967; Carex pumila; and Calystegia soldanella) belonging to phytosociological classes of saltwort (barilla) and coastal glehnia. Cakile edentula competes with dominant species such as the saltwort (barilla) and beach morning glory, causing qualitative changes in species composition. It also affects local ecosystems through its competition with indigenous species, causing destruction of the traditional landscape. Conclusions: However, competition of Cakile edentula with indigenous species and the resulting replacement of such species are limitedly reported. Potential competitors with Cakile edentula have not been found yet. In Northeast Asia, qualitative changes realized in local ecosystems due to invasion of Cakile edentula are significantly noticeable. These necessitate proper controls for this invasive alien species to protect and preserve coastal dune areas.
The existence of coastal terraces, HH(High higher) surfaces found at Gampo of southeast coast and at Jeongdongjin of the central east coast were confirmed at Jigyeong-Ri, the areal border between Gyeongju- and Ulsan city on the southeast coast of Korea Peninsula. Especially this study reports HH JK-surface located on the 155m a.s.l., which is the highest altitude among the ancient shorelines of the coastal terraces in Korea. The HH surfaces on the study area are classified into HH JK at 155m, HH-I at 140m and HH-II at 115m, and each formation stage is related to MIS 17(720∼690ka BP), MIS 15(630∼560ka BP) and MIS 13(510∼480ka BP) respectively. The HH-surfaces remain to be larger than those of H- and L-surfaces. The reason is caused by the unique factors of the coastal geology and morphology on the study area during the formation stage. And also the areal difference by the magnitude of upheaval doesn't exist from north to south because the altitude system of ancient shoreline on each coastal terrace is same along the east coast. The upheaval rate of the eastern coastal areas was measured in the relation to the ancient shoreline and formation stage among the coastal terraces such as HH JK-, HH-I, HH-II, H-III and H-IY surface, and was almost same as 0.23mm/y.
